We use this platform in marketing to track organic performance of our websites. We also use it for competitive research and for keyword research for articles etc.
  • Track website performance - you can track your URL performance over time in terms of how well it's doing over time and compared to similar companies. This is really useful, especially if you are making changes to the website
  • Competitor research - I found it really useful for searching keywords or phrases our competitors show up for in organic and paid search results. We can also look at particular words to see how much competition there is or what keywords competitors use that we don't. It's a pretty versatile tool and so very useful
  • Keywords research - this functionality of the platform is quite extensive. I haven't used it all but what I found really informative is searching for words and phrases that are popular with high impressions and CTRs. I then use this information to compile reports on words to be used by our content writers
Cons
  • Same functionality in more than one location of the site - I found at least couple of different sections where I can perform keyword research. Whilst they both seem useful, I'm getting different results and struggling to see what the difference is between these sections.
  • There is just so much functionality! I feel like I'm really not using it all. What's missing is some clear indication as to what one should start with or some clearer guidelines/signposts explaining what each tool does and how it can be useful.
SEMRush is really useful for keyword/phrase research, competitor research, website tracking.

SEMRush is used as a way to perform In-depth keyword research. We use this for everything from building and expanding paid search campaigns, optimising copy on-page, and even in fleshing at information architecture of a website.

Cons
  • User-friendly interface, but not simple enough for those with little to no understanding of digital marketing
  • You can't replace SEMRush branding on reports. Not too bad if your client side, but certainly could be an issue for brand conscious agencies
  • Managing and reporting keyword lists can be a little clunky
SEMRush's key strength is in its keyword research. When I'm fleshing out campaigns and understanding the user behavior landscape, to inform metadata and optimising copy, SEMRush is nearly unparalleled. However, its clunky keyword list management and exporting features can make a saving, comparing, and sharing that research with stakeholders, is not as easy as it could be.

We are an SEO agency and we use SEMrush a lot in our company. It helps us detect which keywords competitors are ranking on Google. This is priceless for many cases in the SEO industry. For example, when we are creating analysis for new clients we can often get very accurate competitor keyword data and give much better estimates for new potential clients.
  • It provides keyword data for your competitors
  • Historical data on bigger packages
  • Different keyword research process compared to other similar products
Cons
  • It's a bit pricey for bigger teams
  • Not product related, but they are a bit too aggressive in trying to upsell us on longer commitment
  • Overall, data is very good
SEMrush is best suited when you don't know where to start with your keyword research process. You can type in the website of your competitor and it will tell you which keywords they are ranking in top 100 results. This will provide valuable information that you can then expand further with classic keyword research tools that expand the existing keyword lists. Overall, if you use SEMrush with other keyword tools in a forth and back manner you can get a lot of keyword data. If you use it properly it is a great tool.

  • I think they should simplify the dashboard, or reorder the tools to not get lost in [all the] data
  • Information analysis subdomains
SEMRush is a fundamental tool for the day to day of any digital marketer. It is one of the basics and [you] can not do without it. I see no reason not to use it, as it perfectly complements Google tools and others.

Any company that wants to know more about their payment media campaigns and that try to optimize the performance of their positioning strategies and campaigns, must use SEMRush.

We utilize Semrush for keyword research, competitive analysis, backlink audits, organic position tracking, and prospecting sites with digital PR potential. This implies that Semrush saves us time by providing us with all of the information we require for our daily tasks. It'd be as if we were working with our eyes closed if we didn't have it.
