Google Search Console

Search console must be integrated with every website as it is crucial to get a thorough keyword analysis of webpages. It helps in improving your click-through rate and fasten the process of your post getting crawled. Its Robots.txt settings is a bit complicated, hence avoid it if you are not a technical person

Semrush

Semrush is the ultimate keyword research tool. It has a "magic tool" that shows metrics for every keyword that is searched, and it can easily be filtered to show exactly what you're looking for, such as questions, or variants with a similar word in it. Easily export keywords from competitors into a spreadsheet or add them to a keyword manager list to stay organized.Semrush helps us create great reports for our clients as it tracks site health and technical issues, keyword positions, search engine visibility, and much more, all easily exportable to a PDF or even a custom report.

Pros

Google Search Console

  • Provides details on what other sites contain backlinks to your site, along with the page they direct to within your site
  • Displays impressions and click throughs for Google search queries
  • Individual page performance by location and device category as it pertains to generating clicks leading to your site
  • Basic indexing and readability issues within your site
  • The new interface that just rolled out is much easier on the eyes

Semrush

  • Competitive organic research. They do a great job of showing you what any website ranks for, what keywords they bid on in PPC, what ads they are showing display-wise, etc.
  • Organic keyword research. You can see related terms to a specific keyword and get estimated volume, historical volume trends, "difficulty" scores, etc.
  • Link analysis. They have a great suite of tools that find links to your website automatically, track links you currently have and measure their "toxicity" levels, traffic volume, etc.

Cons

Google Search Console

  • It can be a little difficult to navigate
  • More training resources would be an asset. A beginner is given the power to completely destroy a sites search results at the push of a button. Likewise it is a powerful tool to enhance search results also.
  • An option to take care of multiple versions of the same site simultaneously would be helpful. An option to use the same validation script across all versions and administer them simultaneously would be a time save (i.e. non-www, www, http://, and https:// versions of the same site).

Semrush

  • It would be nice to be able to track a specific URL and have that saved so I can go back and look at specific pages I want to follow, not just highest traffic or top keywords without haveing to go to the next level. Post tracking is limited to 3 at the first level.
  • Pricing is on tiers, so some features just are out of reach for a small company.
  • It has a bit of a learning curve so if you aren't ready to learn it, you might not use it.

Google Search Console is a simple program that allows organizations to get a solid understanding of the way their site functions and how users land on it. It can be used for making critical business decisions regarding marketing budgets and that within itself is why it deserves a 10.

SEMRush has a slight learning curve, but everything is organized really well. Once you learn where everything is, using the software and running reports is incredibly easy. You can easily add new projects, get help for improving on-page SEO, and there are even video tutorials that walk you through the whole system if you still feel uncomfortable with it.

As with all Google software, your primary source of help is their forums, their knowledge base articles, or whatever tutorials you can find on the web. Often answers on their forums are not straightforward and may not address the actual issue you're experiencing. The KB articles are typically written like instruction manuals - for better or for worse. Tutorials on the web may vary, but the odds are good someone out there had the same questions as you and was kind enough to document their experience.

This is a great tool that helps you identify the keywords that are common among our competitors. Similar to the keyword gap tool, we also use Backlink Gap tool that help us in determining the backlinks our travel website competitors. It also displays the SERP results list for the specific keyword and with this tool we have already ranked 5 pages on Google's first page

Alternatives Considered

Google Search Console

We use Google Search Console in tandem with other products like Google Analytics - not in place of it. Search Console definitely provides information about organic search keywords that Google Analytics does not provide, so that's been a very helpful addition. We also use Yoast to help with optimization of pages that might be identified by Search Console. In the past, I've used tools like Moz and Screaming Frog do some similar search/ranking analysis; those do have some more unique features that help to guide next steps, but I don't think they're replacements for what Search Console provides, especially given the crawl/sitemap features.

Semrush

We chose Semrush because of how it integrates multiple services into one subscription. Rather than having one subscription for social media, one for listing management and one for SEO, we're able to get all three of these needs met in one service. The customer service is also very good, and they are always making improvement to their platform.

Return on Investment

Google Search Console

  • I'd say there is no business in the world that had negative ROI from GSC, since it's completely free, super easy to implement and has a great value for people with a brain. All of the companies I worked for in the last 10 years were using it and all of these companies had positive ROI.

Semrush

  • ROI for us is proven pretty quickly with SEMrush internally, as when we use it for our clients it supports the agency services that we offer and perform.
  • For our organization, internally, it allows us to better market ourselves, which leads to net new leads and clients.
  • The spend for this tool is minimal compared to the insights it helps us gain, so it's a no-brainer. It's been one of the software we've kept a subscription to for the longest time, and we have no plan on discontinuing it at any point.
