Ahrefs

Ahrefs has great prices for the data they provide. As a freelancer, I know there are cheaper options, but they do not provide the backlink data that Ahrefs provides. As an in-house SEO, I believe that Ahrefs is a must for research. If I had one SEO tool, it would be Ahrefs because it has most SEO tools all in its suite.

SEMRush

SEMRush is very well suited for anybody looking to do keyword research and keep an eye on their site's organic/paid health/traffic. For raw search/keyword research it is my favorite tool on the market, especially for the price. For those looking to mine backlinks and that are more focused on growing a backlink portfolio, a tool such as Ahrefs would be more appropriate as it's competitive analysis across all dimensions and it's backlink indexing is much more robust.

Pros

  • Backlink data: Ahrefs continues to provide the best backlink data in the industry when compared to other tools. Other players are playing catching up, but as a first mover, Ahrefs is ahead of the game by far.
  • Keyword data: Ahrefs provides extremely valuable keyword data. Though I rank them second in this category, the data that they provide is comparable to the first ranked player.
  • Content Explorer: I don't think other industry tools (SEO specific) has a content explorer as useful as Ahrefs. Their content explorer works great for identifying top content and trends for multiple industries.
  • Rank Tracker: This rank tracker is better than the average tracker and Ahrefs provides a large limit for tracked keywords. Though they have moved away from daily updates, the rank tracker is great for bench marking progress.

  • SEMRush is great at telling you not only what keywords you need to rank for, but what keywords you actually are ranking for - and whether or not its the correct page that is ranking or if you have pages internally competing with each other.
  • SEMRush is great at understanding how semantic usage is allowing competitors to outrank on specific keywords
  • SEMRush gets down to the nitty gritty details. You can see how you rank in each market for the same keyword, you can see what page elements are working in your favor and which are not.
  • With new Backlink and keyword analysis tools - you can understand what your backlink profile looks like today and how its changing.
  • Reporting through the API is simple and easy and internal reporting is improving all the time. The operational charts are simple to use.
  • New functionality like annotations and integration with Trello is moving SEMRush to the next level.

Cons

  • New/Lost link lists are typically inaccurate, making it hard to identify real trends vs. links that have just been discovered by Ahrefs.
  • Window for analysis of New/Lost links is limited, making it hard to discover historical trends within the online interface.

  • (Aggregated) Project level reporting and annotation
  • Interface and API speed
  • Correlation of actions/status (competitive/search engine/internal) with SEO changes (position, visibility, etc.)
  • Aggregated program common task identification and prioritization (e.g. how to find template issues from boilerplate from unique)
  • Internal link juice analysis for enterprise

Ahrefs recently became more expensive. While they offer a large web index of backlinks, some of the modules of analysis available in similar tools make them a better value in many respects. Ahrefs continues to update their interface, but the accuracy of link counts and new/lost data modules calls into question the validity of the provided information.

Usability

Ahrefs is very easy to use - you can jump right in and understand most of the assets. Overall, the dashboard snapshots give a very good picture of inbound link activity. For deeper analysis of historical trends, the system can become cumbersome, making it hard to do full work without exporting and reformatting the data.

The reason I just gave it a 8 was the fact that it could be a little better with the UX/UI, as someone who is not aware of SEM/SEO terms can get lost in the tool. The tool itself has a deep learning curve which is not bad but the layout can be improved to make it easy to use.

Alternatives Considered

Each of these tools has advantages over the other. Ahrefs link counts are often considerably higher than Moz or Majestic, which could be indicative of a larger web index or inaccuracy in filtering old links. Ultimately, we use all of these tools to be able to take advantage of the different proprietary analysis modules that they each offer.

First - SEMRush doesn't spend very much of their money on sales. They don't have a big sales staff to support, so they invest that into top notch product managers and developers - who actually reach out to clients to ask them to give them feedback on alpha/beta versions. Second - most of the other enterprise tools expect you to follow their internal workflow. Not SEMrushThird - SEMRush let's the SEO team use information without being pushy about what you should do or not do. I've seen too many enterprise tools suggest that my company take certain actions because a competitor has - without understanding that we're beating our competition because we aren't focused on winning everywhere, but where it matters most.
