Unitrends stacks up very well against the other solutions I've used in the past. Feature set is very good. The thing that tips the scale heavily in their favor for me is the support team - they do an awesome job for us.

  • Unified backup solution for both physical, application, file level, and virtual level backups in a solid easy to use interface.
  • Not complex like the EMC and IBM solutions and not lacking in features like Backup Exec and Veeam.

All are valid solutions but they all have their issues. Our target was single product that would provide storage, backup and replication. Only Cohesity could manage these however they did not support all of our workloads at the time of eval nor did they support output to tape. I would suggest that most any provider can backup the data, but Unitrends fit our needs.

We looked at a few alternatives and the big thing was cost and physical footprint. There were not a lot of good choices over 5 years ago so the choice was easy. But like everything else in business, when you do it well, everyone wants to copy your success. I think Unitrends' support puts them ahead of everyone else.

We compared Unitrends to Datto. Datto has a hypervisor and the ability to run VMware VMs locally on their appliance for disaster recovery. Unitrends has the ability to do an instant recovery which runs off their appliance for storage but you have to have an ESXi host for CPU and RAM. Datto has some nice features but cost is quite more expensive for a Datto. We're going to stick with Unitrends as we grow our data size.

We are at a premium with servers. I really don't have the luxury of just striking up a VM and installing NetBackup or whatever on it. The Appliance is great in that it is already ready for backups. Other backup solutions are pricey. UniTrends worked with us and got us a wonderful deal.

As mentioned previously, Networker was awful, needing a lot of moving pieces to be in sync for it to work properly. Unitrends is all in one (one appliance, one replication point, and one set of agents), and anything not in the all in one package (such as the agents), is easy to update. It's also easy to manage, allowing other technical people (such as DBA's/Developers) access to the restore process.

Unitrends is better, faster and more reliable. The clients used are light weight and fast. I originally purchased the device because of the scale ability i was told it had. Once it was time to scale, i was told i can not scale the device and would need to buy a new device.....which is not cheap. I am currently looking for a different solution.

Unitrends Recovery Series Backup Appliance was simply the most fully featured out of the box, and easiest to scale. The support we received has been fantastic, and they even sent a tech over to help install and configure the appliance the first time we ordered one. The interface takes a little getting used to but once you do everything flows smoothly. Backups in our environment used to fail all of the time, and now they hardly ever do and are quick to restore when needed.

Unitrends was similar to the competitors in what it provided but what sold us was the price, the availability of support and their replacement model. Demoing the UI really showed us how easy the platform was and how quickly we could get up and running. In three years, we have had to replace two HDs and they came next day and support got them up and running inside an hour, both times, while the appliance continued to work!

With the installation of the Unitrends appliance, we now have a flat cost structure, clients can be added/dropped without affecting operating costs. Whenever issues with the appliance are encountered, either questions about the OS, setting up backups/archives, doing recovery or hardware related the Unitrends support team has been exceptional in their assistance, a total change from the cost and support structure of the previous product.

It took me exactly 1 year from the time I first saw unitrends till the day we made the purchase. I selected Unitrends for one reason and one reason only. It works every single time.

We did our homework and boy are we happy. We looked at Backup Exec, Veeam, Arcserve, and AppAssure.

Veeam was probably the top competitor and when I looked at it while visiting another institution it looked and sounded very stable. The techs who worked with it swore by it, but when I asked about support the answer was they used TechNet, and user group sites. When I asked about phone support they indicated they stayed away from that because there were costs associated with it. Next.

We looked at Arcserve, Backup Exec, and AppAssure. We were coming from Backup Exec and already had a sour taste in our mouth, I had used previous versions of Arcserve and although the interface had improved the cost and need for agents for every little thing was a turn-off. AppAssure was really nice but the price was not. By far the best product for us is Unitrends Recovery Series. Its a rock solid product, easy to use, and the price is something we can live with.

While looking for a new backup solution, we also evaluated the Barracuda Backup appliance. While this solution met many of our needs, one of our requirements was the ability to archive to tape, which Barracuda didn't provide.

We looked at various options and we selected Unitrends because of the complete turnkey solution. The hardware and software are both covered by Unitrends and should anything happen there is no finger pointing. Unitrends is able to remotely support the system should I have any questions and they are proactively monitoring the hardware. Should a drive start to fail they will contact us, and ship us a new drive ASAP to get the issue resolved.

I also utilized a Barracuda recovery device and service, I found the Unitrends devices to be more simplified and [since] having the building deduplication I have seen a much larger storage ability for our onsite and off site devices.

Unitrends has a very high value proposition relative to other backup solutions. Veeam at the time of evaluation was strictly limited to virtual systems, while Syncsort was too expensive. Symantec Backup Exec was very archaic in comparison to the intuitive UI of Unitrends, lacked many essential features at the time , and was just a software-based solution. Unitrends is an all-in-one solution that I believe can meet the needs of many customers.

Unitrends provided both a hardware and software solution that was 100% supported. Unitrends guaranteed that we would not run out of storage space. Reviews of the Unitrends Backup Appliance on Spiceworks were very favorable. When complaints were on Spiceworks, the complaints were quickly, respectfully and publicly addressed by Unitrends representatives. Unitrends sales and technical consultants were glad to answer all my questions prior to the sale and kept their word. The Unitrends configuration was less complicated than many other competing products.

We tried the Barracuda Backup appliance which showed promise however, it did not allow us to archive to our existing tape library. This was a deal killer for us. The Unitrends appliance still allows us to utilize our tape drive for archiving purposes. This was not an option for us so we went with the Unitrends system. We have not been disappointed yet.
