Overall Satisfaction with BigCommerce

We use BigCommerce as a complete storefront solution. Everyone in our organization uses this software and it allows us to efficiently address customer needs.
  • The software scales very well. You can easily grow a business from a hobby to 8 figures in revenue using the same infrastructure.
  • The API works great. From popular CRM systems (Infusionsoft) to proprietary fulfillment systems, BigCommerce will integrate with whatever you throw at it.
  • Flexible but powerful architecture. BigCommerce uses a "theme" system, similar to Wordpress, where your DEVs will find many familiar web programming elements (CSS/HTML/PHP) alongside a widget/panel system which simplifies many things.
  • Themes need to be updated every so often and that can be costly. In the last 5-7 years, BigCommerce has evolved its back-end architecture and theme formats multiple times. Thus, if you spent thousands of dollars on a design, you will need to understand that you may need to spend thousands more when they update something and you don't have access to the new functionality.
  • Support is just OK. If something goes wrong, even as an enterprise client (top tier of the software), you may be told that something doesn't work because of your particular theme or customization that were made. You will then need to have your own DEVs fix the issue.
  • It's not as easy to use out of the box as some offerings from competitors. BigCommerce is powerful but there's more of a learning curve than with Shopify, for example.
  • Improved customer experience
  • Enabled automation via the API which reduces labor costs
  • Attract more visitors via a reliable platform
It's very easy to go from humble beginnings to eight figures using this platform. BigCommerce has pricing tiers which are right sized for a wide variety of use cases - from the solopreneur to the executive team with a team of 100. I imagine it's all that anyone except the largest firms would ever need.
We are using BigCommerce to integrate with our CRM system (Infusionsoft) and with a the proprietary warehouse management system used by our 3 PL partner. This enables us to scale our customer experience very effectively and get orders out to everyone quickly. This arrangement also reduces the labor costs associated with data entry and updating customer information.
Shopify: BigCommerce has more features at the price point we need.
1ShoppingCart: BigCommerce is far more versatile and can sustain our business for a greater amount of growth than 1ShoppingCart.
Magento: While Magento was attractive for its customization, it would have required either a full time in-house DEV to perform maintenance, updates, etc or working with an overseas DEV with a lower cost and more risk.

BigCommerce is the perfect blend of features and cost for our purposes.
BigCommerce is well suited for a tech savvy person who wants to open an online store and anticipates high growth in revenue and/or order volume.

BigCommerce is less appropriate for someone who is not tech savvy or who does not have easy/affordable access to someone who is.
