ActiveCampaign

ActiveCampaign is perfect for teams that want a lightweight, easy to use email software which still has the ability to deeply integrate with your codebase/business logic (through tagging via their API and automations). It strikes the balance nicely between allowing developers and marketers to collaborate --- simply instruct the developers to tag users appropriately in the business logic / code base, and then the marketers can use AC's automations initiated by a tag to come up with whatever complex follow-up they desire (all without bugging the developers again).

Benchmark Email

For low volume non-profits, Benchmark Email provides a respectable free service. Ease of use is high and customization of the email is good. The discount for 501(c)(3) organizations and fully free use for non-profits that help children is commendable. Although the GUI editor is flexible and easy to learn, it does have some issues with certain detailed formatting concerns, like properly showing the newlines between paragraphs. Image/photo processing and presentation is similarly both easy to use, but frustrating due to some capability gaps and quirks, like specifying image sizes and display on hi-resolution devices.

Overall, Benchmark Email provides a good service that is easy to learn to expand your communication reach; however, the ROI and satisfaction may not be as high if paying fees comparable to other offerings.

Pros

  • Automations (based on tagging a user from your codebase via their API, start sending that user an email sequence)
  • Campaign Builder (as good as other tools such as Mailchimp)
  • Pricing (pay per contact, not per email sent. AND email addresses can be added to multiple lists and only count as 1 contact, unlike Mailchimp which would consider that 2 contacts)

  • Ease of use - required minimal training to get started.
  • Value - free service for non-profits, with powerful features.
  • User Experience - flow of the process is logical and easy to follow.

Cons

  • The Admin Dashboard Contacts Search tool is very limited in functionality
  • The pricing buckets are very large... It goes 10,000 to 25,000 to 50,000 ... Being more granular would help a lot for businesses just over the cusp of one of these limits
  • Provide an API to validate email addresses as valid or invalid. Mailchimp does this for free when you try to add to your list, but ActiveCampaign allows adding garbage typo-ed email addresses like *@gmail.con to your list (forcing you to use a 3rd party vendor for this)

  • Limited branding on signup forms: I think MailChimp ruined most free ESPs for me as most free email marketing services have limited design and branding options on signup forms. I wanted my signup form to have an image header with the company's logo on it. This feature was important to me so I asked the live customer support at that time if this feature was available and he said yes. Sadly unlike MailChimp that allowed an option for image headers in signup forms (which made it act as a simple landing page) Benchmark email did not. Benchmark now allows the option to add a logo to the top of the form. It wasn't until I went back to SendinBlue that I remembered a workaround to get image headers which was editing the signup forms' HTML code and including an Of course this, also meant constant tweaking to get the right image size.
  • Limited signup form design: Compared to most ESPs both free and paid, Benchmark's signup forms are not very attractive,. The form's design needs an urgent upgrade as it is rather unattractive.
  • Automation: I wouldn't call this a major con as Benchmark does have basic automation which is limited to welcome messages and similar one-off messages but, I suppose SendinBlue and MailerLite are to blame for running free ESPs for me by giving me a rather high expectation.
  • Form publishing: After designing my signup form, I was presented with three options: Place Signup Form directly on your website, Pop-up from a button on your website, Pop-up from a text link on your website. While option one was good and option two was much appreciated, I wanted the form to have a link I could share on social media.

Alternatives Considered

ActiveCampaign strikes the right balance of simplicity versus power. Unlike heavyweights such as AWeber, ActiveCampaign is a breeze to use. However, at the other side of the spectrum other easy to use tools like MailChimp are severely lacking in their ability to integrate automations with your website's business logic. Based on hitting the sweet spot, I can clearly recommend ActiveCampaign over it's competitors to most website businesses.

Of the free email marketing services I tried, Benchmark could only stack up against Zoho Campaigns and Moosend. as unfortunately, MailChimp has better signup form customization options, SendinBlue's free plan offers advanced automation and MailerLite offers advanced customization and the creation of landing page.I do believe that Benchmark email has a lot of potential, and if they fix the design issues and the allow signup forms to have their own URLs that can easily be shared, then they would stack up well against most free ESPs.

Return on Investment

  • ActiveCampaign is the base of our marketing communications operations. So all the leads that we generate and nurture go through ActiveCampaign, which means most of not all of our revenue directly or indirectly is related to ActiveCampaign. It helps us operate and grow the business.
  • It helps us provide more personalized experience for new leads as well as our existing customers.
  • It makes communication more efficient, especially with the Gmail integration.

  • Unfortunately we switched to a different email service provider so Benchmark has not had any impact on our business objectives.
