Likelihood to Recommend

AirWatch

AirWatch is a great tool for large organizations that need to manage more than 100 devices. The product is capable of handling multiple platforms and is scalable to any size company.I would not recommend AirWatch to small companies, companies with minimal MDM needs or companies on a tight budget. It's the Rolls Royce of MDMs, it has all the bells and whistles and it's not inexpensive.

Lookout

Best suited when a company is aware of the level of cyber threat out there, aware of the need to protect at their mobile devices and at the app level.Ironically, it's also best suited when they are not at all aware. Why? Because that's exactly where the threat actors are! All you'd need to do is a few scans, for the unaware/or in denial, to get onboard. The ease of use you provide, and a demo of the cyberintelligence they get as a client "at no extra cost" will convert them pretty quickly.

Pros

  • Enrollment is a snap with many different options. This allows organizations with corporately owned or BYOD programs to bring devices under management in a flexible and scalable solution.
  • Deployment of apps-AirWatch makes deploying apps across your organization simple a quick.
  • AirWatch is usually close to "Zero Day" ready with major hardware manufacturers updated features. Many of the Android and iOS updated features are incorporated into the environments almost as soon as they are released.
  • AirWatch has great customer service. This was not always the case but as the company has grown over the last year in particular, I have been receiving better customer service compared to other MDMs.

  • Works well in the background and does not seem to impact device resources (power, networking, memory).
  • Easy to use.
  • Useful features, yet not overly cumbersome with features you don't plan to use.

Cons

  • Consolidate communication- AirWatch has a tendency to over communicate. I receive about 5 emails a day regarding updates, issues or bug fixes. Unfortunately this leads to some emails being ignored.
  • Make reporting easier to get. I find get a report together is a multi step process. I'd like to see this process become easier in the future.
  • Improve the help menu from within the AirWatch portal. I'd like to see a help menu integrated into the portal as opposed to leaving the portal to read through documentation.
  • Continue to improve the customer service experience. Though it has improved greatly, there is still a little room for improvement. Initial calls to support are exclusively used to open a ticket. Call back times can sometimes be as much as 2 hours.

  • Letting users know when device backups stop after premium services/payment expire.

Likelihood to Renew

We've used it for 3 years and our contract is up later this year. We own the licenses, but we would have to either renew cloud services or bring the services in-house and install on servers here. We may want to see what's new in the marketplace that could be just as useful and cost effective.

Usability

It works well for our environment and what we're using it for. It actually does more than we're currently utilizing, but I believe our needs will change in the near future and we could utilize more features.

I have never had any issue using the application since the UI and settings are laid out in an easy to follow way.

Reliability and Availability

AirWatch5.0

Just in the past few weeks our staff has had several issues with the website. It is either taking a long time to load anything or we are not able to get in at all. This is very frustrating when you are trying to manage and enroll users. It was down 2 days in a row just this past week. Not good!

Went over the availability just a minute ago on the last rating. Don't use the reporting too much but will likely begin that soon. Integration with Active Directory doesn't seem to bog either system down.

They're usually very good. I've talked to any number of techs from level one to level 3. They all seem pretty knowledgeable about the product and how to support it.

Have your organizational structure and heirarchy outlined. This helps when you are ready to create OU's and subs in AirWatch.

Alternatives Considered

Airwatch is the Rolls Royce of MDMs. They have all the bells and whistles that every MDM admin could want. Compared to other MDM solutions this is one of the best and easiest to use for environments for companies that support multiple mobile operating systems. For iOS/Mac exclusive environments I recommend Jamf Pro, but everything else I recommend AirWatch.

Lookout was chosen by T-Mobile, Sprint, and AT&T which many employees have chosen as their mobile network provider. From that standpoint, it made it a simple decision. Its cloud based technology gives insight across almost all mobile code in the world. Lookout identifies connections that would otherwise go unseen without deep investigation. It helps prevent cybercriminals from sneaking into mobile devices and that's the key component for any mobile security solution. MobileIron and other competitor solutions have a similar offering, but based on network provider support I haven't need to look into the competition extensively.

It is really scalable. They love to have more users as you pay by the license. They are great in this regard.

Return on Investment

  • I've seen the benefits of AirWatch when it comes to corporate security. Corporate data is protects and it's difficult to put an exact value on that.
  • Inventory control/device management is made simple. We have dashboard visibility to our devices in real time.
  • With zero touch deployment options through programs like DEP and Android for Work, deploying devices does requires less man power and far less skilled labor.

  • It's always difficult, in cyber, to put an ROI on a "non-event". As they say, the best that can happen to a CISO's day, is that no breach happened.
  • Lookout's auto scan and auto-reporting that every app has been scanned, the number of apps and what has/has not been found gives a level of comfort, and embeds a level of alertness everyday, never to be taken for granted.
  • There has been no negative impact. I open those scans every time, in anticipation of good news but realizing there well could be news of another kind. What I am as confident as possible about, is that, if there were an issue, Lookout would have been there to see it, and take the appropriate actions.
  • In the earlier days of cybersecurity, one would have had to hire an entire team of cyber experts or outsource it to a managed cybersecurity company at a cost that might have prohibited business. Lookout has made is easier for us all to stay compliant, aware and grow.
