Apttus

Apttus CPQ excels for complex contract and/or complex pricing requirements. If your business has simple pricing rules, a less full featured solution may be more appropriate.Apttus CPQ is an easy system to administer, using the same object logic as the Salesforce platform. We implemented Apttus for virtually all of our sales representative processes, and in doing so found that we virtually eliminated speculative ordering.

Oracle CPQ Cloud is well suited to streamline approval processes and decrease quote-to-order time by eliminating paper-based processes with complex pricing lists.

Pros

  • Ability to manage large quantities of validation rules necessary for complex product builds.
  • No product addresses a company's requirement right out of the box, but Apttus CPQ is built on the Salesforce.com platform which is a distinct advantage for us. It allows us to build functional extensions, and customize the application to our specific usage.
  • Service and support is the key for any product, and Apttus has always made efforts to support their products with continual improvements.

  • Orders have always been accurate and we've never yet had an issue processing one
  • Pricing configuration allows for complex tiers within an organization's portfolio and so there are multiple options depending on your situation
  • Report building is simple and intuitive

Cons

  • The GUI design of Apttus is configurable but prescriptive. If you want a very specific look and feel, it will take some effort to do so. There have been some modern design updates recently using AngularJS. Check it out to see if it works for you.

  • It still has bugs at times.
  • A lot of training is required to be able to use Oracle CPQ effectively.

It is critical to our sales process. We are not satisfied with all aspects of the product and have gone through many tough experiences with their PS, support, and PD teams -- but we're not unhappy enough to re-build what we're already built

I'm continually amazed at the flexibility this tool has provided. I've been able to configure all of our products and services without overhauling our way of doing things. The changes we made while implementing BigMachines were to improve our CPQ process, not because we had to match our quoting process to the way BigMachines worked. It's allowed us to formalize our processes and approvals the way we should have been all along. Very cool tool.

The software UI can be as complex or as simple as you need it to be (depending on the business). It does require training others on quote configuration and the order in which to build out order positions prior to configuring a quote. Once users are trained;however, it is fairly straight-forward. The UI is still more static than other new wizard/drag-and-drop models, but it get's the job done

It depends upon the day however there are so many failure points with online services, including our internet service, that this is probably closer to 9 with the latest version

Support

Tier1/tier 2 support can only handle native functionality. Customizations have to be escalated to developers which aren’t included in the support program.

I go ahead and copy the people I directly worked with on implementation for assistance. I would rate them an 8 for support assistance.

Online Training

We attended 5 hours worth of webinars early on.

We had to understand how objects worked to figure out how to structure our data.

I would have liked more in-depth training but it would have been an additional cost

Be iterative. Take the opportunity to build a catalog based on how Apttus works well. Learn the tool yourself or use an SI. Take the time to build a configuration / pricing migration tool with X-Author for Excel or roll your own. Stick with OOTB Apttus as any customization will cost you every time a new version is released

Alternatives Considered

More robust than the competition from what I hear. I was not here when Steelbrick was installed
No photo available
I'm not very familiar with CPQ alternatives but Oracle (BigMachines) is one of if not the best and largest players in the market. BigMachines founders actually created another alternative after their non-compete agreements ended with Oracle who they sold to. I'm sure their product (Steelbrick) is good but they don't have the backing of a large company like Oracle. This probably helps them in some ways as much as it hinders them though.

Return on Investment

  • Generated more than 12,000 quotes since we installed 3 years ago. Related to >164MM in deal bookings.
  • Training is not straight-forward as each instance is different. So, having a tools ops person to understand the deep offering is important.

  • Better audit trail for maintaining Estimated Selling Price.
  • Line item visibility on pricing/discounts.
  • Faster time to create order and contract.
