Linode

Linode is a self-managed platform, you get a VPS that you control, and you need to know what you're getting into. If you're comfortable as a system administrator then Linode is fantastic, but if you want a ready-to-go web host, Linode isn't your thing. But having true root access including the ability to deploy your own filesystem is amazing, and you aren't limited to what their backend tools want to offer.I did have issues with jitter when trying to run our VoIP platform on Linode, but admittedly my office's internet provider is not well connected to where Linode's servers are located. We had similar issues [with] other VPS providers until we went to a VoIP-specific provider.I wish they offered Windows Servers too, but I'm a minority there.

Yahoo Small Business

I would tell a colleague to stay clear of Yahoo Web Hosting/Yahoo Small Business. Our business has been with Yahoo due to the fact that there was nothing else around at the time of our signing up with them. Since then there are much better alternatives as the fact that Yahoo has virtually no third party support really hurts it, and the fact that it is so barebones and hard to customize and work in the back end makes it so that you have to find one of the few expensive developers that specialize in Yahoo. This is another huge hurdle if you plan to build a good website.

Pros

Linode

  • The documentation to get you started is very good. Detailed enough to get you off the ground and not too bulky to bog you down.
  • Pricing and Billing very clear and fair.
  • The Linode platform is not complicated. You are just shown what you need to see at any point in time.

Yahoo Small Business

  • Yahoo Web Hosting/Small Business is above else, cheap in pricing at the very least in terms of monthly costs.
  • The backend of Yahoo Web Hosting/ Small Business is customizable, assuming you can find one of the few developers that can code for it.
  • We were given a dedicated account manager though I believe it was because of how long we were with yahoo and how many complaints we had.

Cons

Linode

  • SSH keys feature under 'My Profile' hasn't reached its potential, e.g. if you want to add more than one user to a machine during deployment.
  • A review of currently available support docs and updating them for the latest (stable) distros would be good.

Yahoo Small Business

  • Extremely old and outdated back end.
  • Yahoo Web Hosting is at the very least customizable but everything beyond just running a simple store requires custom work that you will have to pay an expensive developer to fix for you.
  • Yahoo Web Hosting is a complete mess in terms of branding and policies. In the span of our last year with them, they went from Yahoo to Yahoo small business to Aabaco and then back to Yahoo and each time were assigned a different account manager.
  • Abysmal customer service, every time we had to open a ticket we had a customer service agent in India that could not fix our issue and we were eventually assigned an account manager after numerous complaints.
  • Barely any apps or app eco system on Yahoo.
  • Frequent down times caused by Yahoo Web Hosting cost our business lots of lost revenue.
  • So antiquated and backwards, they were one of the last companies that I know of to switch over to https, we reached out to them several times to switch our website to https and it took an agonizing amount of time for Yahoo to implement it for all their customers.

I've been with them a long time. They provide me with the capabilities I need coupled with knowledgeable support that's not pay-for-extra.However, if I move to a non-Linux OS, the level of support by necessity will drop off. I can still ask questions about the infrastructure but I my ability to ask about OS features will decrease.

Usability

Linode is perfect for what it offers: The UI is a great start. Managing DNS is straightforward. The API is simple and well documented. Everything just works. The performance of the VMs is good and global coverage is more than sufficient for me. Private Layer 2 networking is the only feature I miss which would be really adding value.

Reliability and Availability

There is very little planned downtime. Whenever planned downtime is necessary I'm always given lots of advanced notice and an explanation that I can pass along to my users that they'll understand. I really appreciate that Linode appreciates my commitment to reliable service to my users. It shows that they believe they've been successful when I'm successful.

Linode is an infrastructure provider issues related to performance are really on me. Linode provides a capable infrastructure and allows me to tailor performance of the services I provide to my customers to my specific situation. Linode allows me to implement "tweaks" that, from experience, I know will do the job with little risk without a whole bunch of static from idiot support 'droids who just get in the way ("this isn't supported at the present time").

In fact, I've needed customer support in rare occasions. In those cases, service was pretty fast and adequate.I love when I get notified something is wrong at 3:00 am and by 3:30 am it was resolved with no notice by me or my customers.

The customer support for Yahoo Web hosting is a complete disaster. Every call is transferred to a technical support department that is in India which usually isn't an issue as that is the norm for a lot of businesses, however, this technical support team in Yahoo does not know how to diagnose issues or offer support. Every issue we had some, some critical like why is our website down were met with clueless customer support agents that would get back to us in 48 hours minimum. Eventually, we were given an account manager that actually did his best and was able to get to the right people at times for critical issues but it still was a complete hassle and waste of time every time we had any issue with Yahoo Web hosting.

I wish it hadn't taken as many iterations as it did. Some of it is my own fault and some of it was related to limitations imposed on me by the programming environment I chose to use. All in all, I'd say I did a pretty good job. I'd stack my homegrown spam defenses up against anyone's!

Alternatives Considered

Linode

We're moving from Bluehost. We've found Bluehost to be overpriced, underperforming, and with support that's quite bad. Their offerings are geared toward consumers and it shows. You'll be paying more for things that are really antifeatures, like big clunky Cpanel installs that require specific OS versions and frozen system packages. Absolutely nightmarish to maintain. Antique, opaque billing system. Ossified. Coasting. Just not a good match for us.
Linode is the polar opposite. SSDs are table stakes, everything is on-demand and can be sampled at will, support has been gracious and eager to assist with our migrations - it feels like a banquet of options built just for us.
For a long time whenever I was looking for documentation online, I would
end up on a DigitalOcean tutorial, but in recent years Linode has even
caught up there. I opted to try out Linode due to mindshare among community figures I respect, and once I gave it a shot I was hooked. Never felt the need to look anywhere else afterward.

Yahoo Small Business

After we departed Yahoo Web hosting we found out that there are numerous much better web hosting platforms, the main we focused on were Shopify, GoDaddy, BigCommerce, and WordPress. Between either is a much better alternative than Yahoo Web hosting as they all have much better third party support, more familiarity in the platforms which means more developers that are familiar with the platforms. Above all else, all three of these companies have stood the test of time and haven't rebranded themselves into different company names like Yahoo did with Aabaco and back and are much better for any small business.

Scalability

Although I use only a fraction of their product offerings, the total set makes scalability an easy goal to shoot for. As I said, I have a few customers that use the services my Linode provides...and I like it that way. However, should I need to scale up, I can...without incurring any more cost than I need to.

Return on Investment

Linode

  • Competitive pricing was good for small to medium server needs (beyond the 32GB servers it becomes much more affordable to get dedicated servers elsewhere).
  • Network speeds gave good benefit to hosting speeds for TTFB which was a good selling point for some of our services.
  • Downtime caused much concern from clients/customers, degraded our reputation.

Yahoo Small Business

  • Yahoo Web Hosting impacted our business in a very negative way with all the time we wasted and revenue we lost.
  • Our biggest loss of revenue was deciding to stay longer than we had to with Yahoo Web Hosting as the cost of moving to another platform was high but we had no choice.
  • Yahoo Web Hosting constantly interfered with our workflow with its lack of third party support and poor customer service and constant downtimes.
  • For instance when we wanted to find an inventory system for our business virtually NO ONE supported Yahoo.
