Overall Satisfaction with Unitrends

Our Unitrends appliance backs up our entire server network, both physical and virtual. With the addition of archiving to removable hard drives, we are able to keep archives off site. We also added Unitrends Cloud storage to provide ourselves with a level of disaster recovery options.
  • Set it and forget it. It is very rare that I have to do anything more than open my daily email notification from the appliance to make sure things are running smoothly. No need to open the management console every day.
  • Speed of backups. We backup some systems hourly and since they utilize virtual system snapshots, there is no noticeable slow down in the system. The hourly transaction backups take less than 5 minutes and they are even replicated to the Unitrends Cloud within 10 minutes.
  • Ease of recovery. We test our backups regularly, and the quickness of restoring a virtual machine is a huge plus. Restore testing used to take us hours with tape systems, now I can test even our largest VMs in just minutes.
  • The management portal is still Flash based, although I understand it is being updated to HTML5.
  • Initially, setting up backup schedules was a little confusing. It is second nature now, but there was a bit of a learning curve at first.
  • Sometimes retention alerts fail to clear. This issue has led me to ignoring the alerts altogether until a fix has been put in place.
  • Biggest ROI is how well I can sleep at night. Our old tape system used to scare me. Now that we are able to do regular test restores, I'm absolutely certain my backups will be available when I need them.
  • A solid backup solution is vital to thwarting ransom-ware attacks that are so prevalent these days. We have had to restore file shares twice due to these infections, both times it was fixed in less than an hour, and we never had to pay for decryption.
Veeam and Barracuda were both tested before we made the decision to use Unitrends. Neither solution filled all of our needs like Unitrends did. Veeam could not backup our physical servers and Barracuda was outside our budget at the time.
Unitrends is very well suited to environments with a mix of physical and virtual machines. The single license model (as opposed to a license for each server or application) makes it very economical with dense virtual hosts. This can also mean that environments with only a couple of servers would most likely find cheaper solutions than license per server or application.
