3dcart

3dcart is well suited to getting a site up and running quickly with shopping cart capabilities. The merchant account set up was easy and there are inventory and shipping capabilities, as well. It is a very powerful tool for a small business without full time IT support on staff. While I did not have many products, it seemed like a merchant with a large inventory would have to spend a great deal of time on setting up the store

Wix

Wix is great if you have a great eye for design and are trying to build a beautiful, unique site. It is not great for multi-page sites, as it is hard to create cohesion across the pages, and the universal settings are not great. If you think you may want to make extreme changes to your site at a later time, I would recommend Squarespace, which is less custom but more manageable for large updates.

Pros

  • Strong shopping cart capabilities, with all types of promotions and discounting capabilities. Easy to set up the promotion and implement the campaign.
  • Integration with our email provider to be able to segment buyers based on timing of purchase.
  • Easy to use blog, was able to set up each post simply and create SEO/Meta tags associated with each post.
  • Products set up was easy and there are options for categories and classes to make setting up the store easy.
  • Easy to use for someone with no programming skills.
  • Drag and drop elements, with tons of flexibility
  • No grid system allows you to truly customize details
  • Options to use more complex functions like page anchors, light boxes, animations that are not available without code on Squarespace

Cons

  • Using images on the site and in the blog was a cumbersome process. The upload was easy enough, but finding and using the image after upload was terrible. The navigation of the images was difficult and there were no sort functions.
  • For a simple site without the need for a log in admin or shipping, these functions and capabilities were not easily hidden or removed. You needed to have a programmer go into the code to remove them. For a tool like 3dcart, it seemed to be something they could have taken care of with check boxes in the settings.
  • While expected, the templates available were very basic and simple. To enhance the look of your site, you will need a programmer or pay for the premium templates.
  • Due to a lack of grid and universal design settings, it is a headache to adjust your site or your design (fonts, colors, shapes, etc)
  • Lots of click fatigue to customize, not always great at showing relevant "custom objects" based on your site
  • Easy to misalign objects and create messy pages

Not applicable - as a franchisee, the franchiser took over the web site and shopping cart capabilities, so I no longer need the tool. But I would recommend it.

Great customization, but a pain to backtrack. They recently added the ability to set fonts etc as headings, title, body etc, but if you did not begin your build with these presets you are screwed if you ever try to change font/ colors/layout etc.

Alternatives Considered

Selected 3dcart based on price point and ease of getting started. Gave a two week free trial to make sure I could get it set up. Seemed easier than other options and had room to grow if I need more capabilities. It also integrated with QuckBooks, FaceBook and Auth.net which were all part of the package right from the start.
Squarespace is the other primary no-code website builder. Squarespace has less ability for customization, as everything exists in a grid and there are extreme limitations to how you can lay out a page. When it came to designing a "designer" website, Wix had a lot more opportunities to help my brand shine through custom layouts and the use of shapes. However, Squarespace is much easier to update and make large-scale changes, so if I were to significantly update my site again, I would consider switching over for ease of access.

Return on Investment

  • Enhanced customer service with ticket system.
  • Was able to quickly set up shop and get started on the web.
  • Through organic search and PPC ads, I have been found online and earned new customers this way.
  • I was able to see a positive ROI in my business after 2-3 months (considering time invested, not just subscription price).
  • I am currently trying to use a Wix form to convert more leads and get contact information but I am not a fan of the forms I have seen so far.
