8x8 Virtual Office Enterprise Suite

Some of the best scenarios are working remotely. It really allows you to get everything you need out of an office phone right from your computer/cell without any need for hardware. It's not great when you've already plugged in a dialer of some sort, or software like Outreach.io that has some overlap in features (click to dial, especially).

Google Voice

When I move to a new city the first thing I do is hop on Google Voice to choose a new phone number local to the area. Voice allows me to spend an hour picking and choosing a vanity number, which I can then transfer to my cell provider and move my old cell number to Voice. It's a lumpy process, but it's the only way to freely choose a new phone number and never lose an old number. For the rest of time, I will own these previous phone numbers, with no monthly fee. This allows me to keep using old business cards and not stress about updating all of my contact info everywhere while also being able to immediately take advantage of a new number. As someone who moves frequently, this is hugely helpful.

  • Google Voice makes SMS messaging extremely easy when paired with Google Hangouts.
  • Voice handles call forwarding with ease. Set it and forget it.
  • Voice offers some simple conditional logic to handle forwarding at various times of day or days of the week.
  • Voice transcribes voicemails and delivers them via SMS which saves me the hassle of ever checking voicemail.
  • Voice allows for easy vanity phone number selection! Just type in a word or number string and see your options! So convenient.

Cons

  • Integration with Insidesales/Salesforce/Outreach/etc.
  • RAM usage could be lower
  • Cross platform?

  • The Voice to text translations are nearly always wrong. Sufficient to understand the 'gist' of a message but unable to accurately tell you the content
  • Voice is a slowly advancing product; it's obvious that it is not a priority application for Google. Be cognizant of the fact that it may be killed as a result.
  • If you have concerns about confidentiality of the messages you must understand that google parses the voicemails through their servers - extracting the content and more. It's highly likely that the content is saved in their servers indefinitely and is findable by official government requests and Google employees. This is *not* a secure system. For people wanting prints and photoshoots of their family it works wonderfully. For Lawyers who require confidentiality you should consider other options.

It's free, effective and has been useful for years. There is no reason I would discontinue the use of a product that continues to slowly improve; while still providing all the features I need

It is a pretty seamless program to transfer to, even for people who either have little experience with these programs or people who were stuck on Skype

Alternatives Considered

I had no control over this but we are using 8x8 virtual office enterprise suite to get some of the functionality, mostly click to dial and contact handling. It's not exactly a competitor, but if you're looking for an easy way to utilize your company phone system remotely, I've had a great experience, including working from home for an entire month on it.

Well in a quick comparison to RingCentral & Vonage, Google Voice lacks a slew of features that the others provide, however, in terms of price Google is crushing it. All the services have their pros/cons, and if you're utilizing a VoIP phone system, the other products may be a better option. Overall I'm still very happy with Google Voice and it's saved me thousands of dollars of the past 6 years.
