If you do not have a large budget and are a large organization, I would steer clear of Actuate. If you are looking to do very complex washboarding, I would not use them. Your developers have to be very skilled to work with this. Plan to bring in consultants if necessary to help your process. Adhoc reporting is weak. If your pricing is user based and you expand, this could be very expensive.

Sisense

I believe Sisense is perfectly suited for any organization of any size that have access to the proper resources, as the tool is very expensive. The data connectors come in all shapes and sizes out of the box, which allows a great deal of data control within the ElastiCubes. Additionally, while the platform only runs on Windows platforms, the web application can be accessed on any client: mobile, Apple, Windows, etc. This allows a much more flexible user experience, resulting in data and dashboards reaching further than any other tool.

Pros

  • The report outputs can vary across different types such as HTML, PDF, and Excel
  • Their open source offering is very sufficient
  • There are great boards and blogs for developers and engineers to expand and use their features.
  • The people from the company that I've worked with are professional and courteous.
Bri Gipson profile photo
  • Great management of large amounts of data from numerous sources.
  • Beautiful visualization capabilities.
  • Fantastic support of customizations through custom JS plug-ins.
  • Implementation requires very little effort allowing users to start working with their data in a short amount of time.

Cons

  • Support for more databases, such as other BI tools.
  • There can be more graph types.
No photo available
  • After initial implementation, learning spikes up rather quickly in regard to SQL joins and custom table manipulation.
  • There is plenty of documentation surrounding how to do specific tasks, but not as it pertains to errors and why other things do not work. However, this is constantly improving as the community grows and collaborators contribute content.
  • There are quite a few tasks that require significant manual input and design. This is ideal in many situations; however, many users would like a more intuitive engine that can create working widgets automatically based on the type of data fed. Again, this is already a work in progress and will likely need much more data to establish a learning engine.

I rated it a 4 out of 10 because we did not renew the contract due to price. It is very expensive and the customer did not want to re-up for that price. They decided that they didn't need all the power that SiSense has, so they asked us for a cheaper solution.

SiSense is usually performing better then other solutions even if going for complex reports/dashboards(of course within reasonable frames). I haven't noticed any bad influence on other systems, usually if something happens it stays within SiSense.

This team is one of the few companies where I can literally Skype them for help and they respond immediately. Most don't realize how rare that actually is in the industry. Expanding their presence to the eastern time zone of the United States has made them more accessible as a result

Easy and free training that allowed us quickly understand basics in SiSense and start using them. More advanced features requires some browsing through SiSense forums, but there is always support to help, and SiSense support is one of the best whith which I worked so far.

Many examples, videos and scenarios which you try on your own right away. This combined with in-person training gives you enough to utilize most of SiSense's power.

Breadth of Deployment

The design tool is useful for basic reporting, but many reports require some experience in SQL and JavaScript. Java programming, though not a required skill for basic reports, is needed for better reporting and to access the more advanced features (such as debugging).
Bri Gipson profile photo
We presently have 200 plus users both from outside and inside (on a smaller side) of the company. We think to use SiSense onward as our defacto/standard go to data visualization tool. All future applications would be using it too instead of creating dashboards "by hand".

Alternatives Considered

Actuate has a HUGE number of features that can tie nicely into almost any ERP but it takes some time to learn and the development community was relatively small compared to the Crystal Reports alternative. Crystal was far easier to learn and had a massive support base. Probably because it is now owned by SAP.

1) Easy to use, really, there is nothing too much to say. The set up is easy and not confusing. You can use it internally or externally.
2) Customer Service, having spoken to various product reps from similar industry. Sisense rep provides you with the best support to get started, and it is really appreciated.

Collaboration and Sharing

OpenText Analytics6.1
Based on 7 answers
Engineers can share and collaborate building tasks - e.g. One develope builds the report design while another builds the query. But I can't pass in a requirements template from a spreadsheet to construct the report. Collaboration is still strongly based on comminication between stakeholders and engineers rather than through automation

Sisense8.6

1) It is easy to share a dashboard or a data source to a team.
2) An administrator can also decide who has the capability to edit and design dashboard.
3) Admin can also set up security rules so that restricted information is shared to only users who have the right permission and that's really important today.

1) It is really easy to merge data from different sources.
2) It has good odbc drivers (This is really important to us as other providers do not have their own native odbc driver).
3) It queries really quickly than compared to other providers.
4) The option to use real time data (Via live connector)

Return on Investment

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.
No photo available
  • Report development time is reduced from 2~3 days to 2~3 hours.
  • Report querying time is improved from 0.5~10 mins to 2~30 seconds.
  • A 2-staff team delivers 10 times the BI output that we did on the old system.
  • We were able to deliver BI and data analysis for all business functions instead of a very limited group of users
