Apple Remote Desktop

For a small deployment of macOS, I can see where Apple Remote Desktop could suffice. I can see where a company that is strapped for cash could benefit from a knowledgeable employee using it to automate some tasks. I am not comfortable giving an estimate number-wise.For a large deployment of macOS or iOS, this would be a very inappropriate tool. There are far too many obstacles for an app like Apple Remote Desktop to successfully manage a large fleet of macOS computers or really any number of iOS devices. You simply need an MDM solution in this day and age. This will become increasingly necessary, even in small numbers, but MDM providers have started to provide solutions for customers in these situations.

Bomgar Remote Support Software

This system is perfect for a helpdesk environment that must support customers in a large geographic area. It works well on virtually all systems regardless of the Internet provider. The only locations that I have ever had issues are those that are extremely tight on security and refuse to allow the Bomgar software to run on their network. (whitelisting)

  • Cannot install DMGs

  • The only place I can think of where Bomgar could improve is to allow mixing of licenses on the appliance. We purchased Enterprise licenses to get the vPro functionality, but not all of our support reps need it. It would be nice to be able to buy standard licenses that elevated to Enterprise if someone needed that functionality and an Enterprise license was available.

Just renewed last month. The support and the updates are so valuable.. The support not because it has issues, but because we are always learning and adding features to improve our customer and tech experience.

Bomgar is so simple to use that we didn't need to have training to show engineers how to use it, we had them install the client, login, and play around with it, they got the hang of it quite easily and embraced using it with customers. When we were acquired by another company they wanted to use Bomgar, all we needed to do is add them into our LDAP directory and allow them to login, they picked it up and began using it with their customers immediately. The software BEGS people to use it once you try it, you will be hooked! Whether you use it to support internal customers, external customers, access your own machines remotely, or just do file transfers, there is nothing that is as feature rich as Bomgar.

As far as uptime is concerned, Since Bomgar creates the Hardware and Software, they can make it the most reliable box in our datacenter, and they also have options for availability and redundancy that we didn't need to utilize, we have a manual fail-over process that we can invoke, but there are configurations that would allow for an automated failover as well.

There is no lag-time at all, no matter how many users we have on the box, it is always entirely dependant on the customers internet speed (as we have a very fast connection), that is the only issue I've EVER seen with Bomgar, no matter how many sessions we run the box is always up, always fast, always working.

As mentioned elsewhere in my review, Bomgar added the features that we needed before we were ever their customer, we were just checking out possible vendors and Bomgar was on the list, we told them our requirements, and they helped improve their product and impressed us beyond words. We have had very few problems where we have needed to call support, but in those rare instances, they have been incredibly efficient at understanding and solving our issue (one issue was with an API change, now they have a field that keeps backwards compatibility with older APIs to make sure that "things" don't change when you upgrade to the next version). Again, swift resolution, very knowledgeable, always customer focused and oriented.

we didn't have in-person training because their online training was so overwhelmingly well done. Start by looking at the docs: http://www.bomgar.com/docs/content/index.htm if that alone doesn't answer all your questions, there will be a window that pops up asking if you would like to chat with a sales representative, or a support engineer. Either of them can answer all of your questions as easily as if they were standing there with you, or talking to you on the phone, it is truly the power of Bomgar!

Since we have installed and been running Bomgar software for quite some time now, we have taken the opportunity to attend various web trainings, and they are always very prompt, informative and open to questions/discussions. We appreciate the work that Bomgar does to keep their customer community informed of new features and discussions of further product developments.

Alternatives Considered

I would feel much more comfortable having one of these alternative solutions as our Remote Desktop management tools. Each has their drawbacks and expenses associated with them, but we simply have too large of a deployment to not be considering alternatives. If it is the only solution you can afford, it is OK to start here. I could see where this would have a return on investment, but it is really only suitable for a very small and localized scale. If employees are at all mobile, the duct taping of products necessary (VPN, distribution points, script repositories) would be very cumbersome.

One thing I like about Dameware is that you have access to a remote command prompt and that has been very handy at times. But Dameware is limited to on the network support, last time I used it. Bomgar can handle multiple platforms and operating systems. I cant email an invite from Dameware for remote support over the internet.

Return on Investment

  • I feel we have made some significant compromises in the security of our macOS deployment to continue supporting Apple Remote Desktop
  • At the same time, Apple Remote Desktop has provided remote access to workstations without providing access to more privileged pieces of our deployment (scripts, packages, et cetera)
  • It is a relatively easy program to learn and teach new staff how to use
  • There is a significant lack of auditing capabilities, and a bad actor (whether that is an employee or anyone else) could cause significant damage with relative ease

  • This has really assisted us in being able to remote into a PC rather than having to drive there or to travel there. We had our first international ticket come through this afternoon for a pc in a South American country. That was interesting.
  • It is not cheap, it will cost you plenty.
  • But what other product has the versatility that Bomgar has?
