+ I strongly believe that this tool helps when a firm has good user count (depends on business model) as most of these tools are data friends. More data - more valuable insights+ Best fit if someone who is looking for deeper insights of individual page- Not suggested for very fewer visits of a website. Suggested to improve better visit count

Heap

Heap really shines in situations where teams don't have everything worked out in the beginning. Tools like Mixpanel, while very powerful and easy to use, require a certain amount of planning and prior knowledge of events you will need to send over. Creating events after the initial formulation will result in events with different time periods of data, which can be challenging to manage. Heap lets you create that data set in a much more organic and experimental way.

Pros

Crazy Egg

  • Provides heatmaps that shows you the elements on your site that are and aren't performing well.
  • Provides scrollmaps so you can see how far down a page users are scrolling and which content never gets seen.
  • Screenshots show you how your website looks across a variety of different devices.
  • Provides a type of clickmap called confetti that enables you visualise clicks by segments - device, new/returning visitors, campaigns and other metrics.

Heap

  • Heap is powerful, but you don't need to be a power user to take advantage of its features. With a simple interface, it's easy to assemble queries and reports on any kind of action users take on your site or app.
  • Heap's ability to track individual users, leads, and customers through their entire journey is incredibly valuable. It can give you a more complete picture into how people are interacting with your site beyond the "perfect" user stories you've envisioned.
  • Heap's visual design is clean and easy to navigate. The charts, graphs, and flow charts that it generates are easy for anyone to understand, and reports don't need any preparation before sending to upper management or C-suite members.

Cons

Crazy Egg

  • The largest thing we've struggled with is the Optimizely integration. I've contacted customer service a few times to get it properly setup. Customer Service is always friendly and helpful; they provide clear steps to get it setup. Unfortunately despite clear instructions, they are tedious, and if not completed in the correct order, the integration with Optimizely does not work. My success rate with the integration is less than 55%.

Heap

  • Reporting. The reporting is just atrociously bad. There are hard limits in the table view that result in many lines being grouped under "other." You must export the data into Excel to have this ungrouped. There are no default reports for basic web analytics, so every single report must be manually defined, and there are no dashboards. You can't drill down as deeply as needed (I want three layers minimum), and if you use more than one metric, you can't group by other variables. This limits the usefulness tremendously. My current plan is to export all data into our data warehouse and plug into Tableau.
  • Default variables. The key virtue of Heap is ease of defining variables, but that falls flat when it comes to so many things I consider to be basic. If you'd like to know screen size or resolution, you need custom code. DMA is not included. Query parameters are not included. All of these things will require that custom code be written and added, which means I need dev resources. There should be an interface that lists variables and allows me to define them.
  • Segmentation. This is a consequence of the lack of default variables. I tried defining paid search and after an hour of tweaking the logic, I gave up when I couldn't get it to register more than 70 visits in a month where there were 200,000 paid search visits. For our customer information drawn from first party cookies, I'll again need custom code and dev resources.

It's a great tool considering how inexpensive it is. If used correctly and you have a plan for tracking your websites, this tool can make a world of a difference. If you are not going to sit down and take the time to make a plan for how to use this tool, I would say it is not worth your time. Yes, you can look at items on your website that need to be changed, but without a consistent plan, other important items that need changing can be lost in the mix. Make sure you have enough time and energy to invest in this and it will be well worth it

Usability

I gave Crazy Egg an overall rating of 9 because of its easy to use dashboard, integration and useful tools. If I need to quickly setup a page test, I can add the URL to make a snapshot, start the test and sometimes walk away (until its complete). Crazy Egg allows you set when the test should conclude, which can be helpful if you need to manage monthly visitor usage. You can test on all devices or be specific (i.e. Mobile). I also gave it a 9 because I feel as though the software [Crazy Egg] could improve on its steps to integrate with the A/B testing tool, Optimizely.

It's slow to post data, and slow to get a snapshot to finally be active (i.e. not pending). Not intolerable, but would be nice to see data within a couple hours. Often have to wait to the next day.

I think support is an area where Crazy Egg is lacking. I would love to have a quarterly check-in with a Crazy Egg rep to understand what kinds of changes have been made to the platform and what is on the horizon. I also think a quick consulting sessions with a rep could be extremely beneficial, as I'm sure there are ways to use the tool that we haven't even thought about yet that would be extremely insightful for our team.

It is simple. JavaScript code needs to be added to any pages where you want to run tests. That's it.

Alternatives Considered

Crazy Egg

It is very simple to use, everything from setting up to seeing the results. You can easily export everything into a JPG or PDF and share it with clients. CrazyEgg is also more value oriented with a lower price point.

Heap

Heap is very similar to other tools out there including the ones I listed above. They all have a similar assortment of graphs, cohort analyses, and live views. Where Heap really stands apart is in its easy-to-use event visualizer, which lets you quickly create all the events you need without any programmatic effort (outside the initial script). Furthermore, it allows you to create events at any time and have a retroactive look a the data. Really invaluable stuff for teams that are young and like to experiment.

Scalability

Crazy Egg

Crazy Egg 9.8

Its reliability (not scaleability, as the question asks for, sorry) is pretty good but through our testing we know that some clicks do not get recorded. It doesn't bother us a lot because we look at the aggregate of thousands of visits, but we do know it misses things. As for scaleability, it's about right. You really don't want zillions of clicks per snapshot - the screen just turns to 100% dots and you lose the ability to differentiate different screen areas. We find that 25,000 clicks for a page gives us a really good view.

Return on Investment

Crazy Egg

  • Helped us increase blog ad clicks by a huge % (I wish I remember the exact percentage, but I believe it was 300%+ or something close to there).
  • Helped us make data-driven decisions on how to update and design our website.
  • Allows us to easily A/B test changes on website and measure data-driven results.

  • Positive: easy to understand once we got it set up by our dev.
  • Positive: easy to track customer insights over time.
