I would use it for Admissions, HR, and Administrative purposes. It automates and streamlines processes like no other. However, I would not recommend it for someone unaware of the third party integrations. You can pull a CSV, but that can become burdensome. If you know Google Sheets, you can create a filter to make the data manageable. For someone who knows how to do this, Formstack is wonderful; if you don't, be prepared to feel lost on data until you get the hang of it.

Google Forms

In education, Google Forms can be used for a variety of situations. Teachers and staff use Google Forms for online quizzes, staff or student polls, and even as a ballot for elections for Student Government or other club officers. Students can use Google Forms for surveys to collect data for a research project or to collect data for student interest in Spirit Days or other community activities. The only drawback is that Google Forms is a bit flat and doesn't allow much change in the layout or the ability to add any other media. Overall, though, our school district uses Google Forms quite often

Pros

Formstack

  • Formstack allowed us to customize the look and feel of our forms to match our branding. It was easy for our engineers to integrate the forms within our onboarding process to deliver a seamless experience.
  • Formstack integrates well with HubSpot, our marketing automation platform of choice.
  • Formstack offered us a lot of flexibility in the types/formats of questions we could deploy (open-ended text, multi-choice, single choice, etc.). This made it easy to get data the way we wanted and facilitated getting that data into HubSpot.

Google Forms

  • Simple & Easy to create. You need little to no knowledge on the working of Google forms, the process is intuitive and quick.
  • Data collection is a breeze. The data gathered from google forms is precisely presented to you without modification. Integration with Google Sheets, provides us with more flexibility to filter and sort complex data fields.
  • Personalization - Google forms allows us to brand the surveys/questionnaires that we send out. They feel a little more personalized and worked up that just generic forms that our competitors send out.

Cons

Formstack

  • Buggy Updates: Formstack tends to make on-the-fly updates that break features. We run into this about once a year
  • Appearance: the forms are starting to look dated compared to some of the competitors (looking at you, Typeform)
  • Dynamic Data: passing data from one field to another is not-exactly doable
  • Paid Add-Ons: the price for Formstack is already an arm and a leg; the fact that they have additional monthly paid add-ons is frustrating
  • User Limits: user accounts barely do anything outside of 'view/edit' permissions, thus the low volume allocated seems a bit greedy at $10/user/mo for more

Google Forms

  • My number one issue is that in quizzes, the Multiple Choice Grid format (essentially, a matching section, which is the ideal format for some information) will not allow an answer key to be programmed. This means manual grading of an item of this type.
  • Some features are not very intuitive, such as adding an answer key. It's rather buried. The Help option will provide guidance, but I feel that as a relatively tech-savvy person, I should be able to find and use all commonly used features without having to go to the Help section.
  • Forms do not automatically include email notifications to the creator when participants finish the quiz, and this setting has to be turned on manually for each form you create. It would be handy if there were an across-the-board option to indicate that you do or don't want email notifications for responses to all your Forms.

Our user base has come to rely on Formstack to get forms done. The Formstack tools make it easy to start from scratch or copy an existing form to "quick start" a new, similar form. The price is right and frees up IT staff to do more transformative work.

Well written, modern software. Works as expected for software of 'today.' Does not operate like something from five or ten years ago...like a legacy platform. Continuous improvements are nice to see.

I love google forms, it is simple enough to get all the voting and attendance done that we need. I rate it this high because I have recommended it to a lot of my friends at school who run clubs. It is very user friendly and I had almost no problems with it what so ever

Formstack has awesome support! They are always quick to respond and genuinely care for their clients' success. They will work with you to find a solution or let developers know about your feature request. There are a few things on the feature request forum that I wish they would implement sooner, but I am at least grateful that they give clients a space to voice their ideas and take them into consideration.

I like the support and the support team is very helpful. I do wish that there was an online chat instead of email, I don't know if this has changed because I haven't needed help in a while but that is the only thing that I wish google forms would include

We implemented on one of the earlier versions. Through continuous engineering improvements, the interface keeps getting easier and more intuitive. Therefore, later implementations keep getting easier and better.

Formstack

Drupal is a much more customizable platform, however you must have someone build the forms first and then you can work with them if you do not have the programming knowledge. If you have any changes to make, it can sometimes be both a time consuming and difficult process. Formstack is much more efficient if you do not have an in house programmer.

Survey Monkey can be a tad more clunky in the building- there is something that is so seamless when using Google products. Google Forms we use when we don't want something too complicated- and most people are very familiar with the Google Forms process, so I trust the backend the entire time. In more recent years, we find ourselves turning to Google Forms more- I am a more tech savvy member of the team, but what I like about using Google Forms is that I can pass it on to my other team member, who feels less confident in this area. With SurveyMonkey, I'm typically the main staff member who feels like they can work it out adeptly. Plus, as I've mentioned, the price is absolutely impossible to beat for the quality

Return on Investment

Formstack

  • Positive - ability to analyze submission trends - e.g. when a marketing email is sent, looking at increased form viewing and submissions in relation to the sending of the campaign.
  • Immediate response - those that submit forms receive immediate response that their form has been submitted.

Google Forms

  • We've been able to gather feedback quickly and efficiently without spending any of the organizational budget.
  • We've been able to address concerns or issues due to the feedback, therefore improving our programming.
  • We continue to get great suggestions and feedback from learners regarding what they want to learn or see on our site.
