Hunter
The scenario we most commonly use Hunter for is to quickly find and retrieve contact email information. Phone numbers are an added bonus, but they tend to only be available for contacts in the US. SDRs have the extension in order to confirm or to help them "guess" as to what a contact's email address might be. This speeds up our prospecting time considerably. Where Hunter falls short is not being flexible where companies have more than one email format.

PersistIQ
PersistIQ is well suited for outbound marketing. It's great for setting up sales and marketing campaigns to new and prospective clients. The fact that PersistIQ emails are basic (they look like normal personal emails) and easy to personalize, makes the whole process feel more genuine than, say, MailChimp. PersistIQ won't replace a bulk emailing tool or CRM. It serves a different purpose than, for example, Marketo or MailChimp, two products we also use

Pros
Hunter
  • Hunter provides a quick and easy way to look up the email format for any company using the free Google Chrome extension.
  • Hunter allows you to upload a bulk list of emails and verify them easily.
  • Hunter shows where verified emails were found on web pages and PDF documents. This shows that the emails were published by trusted sources.

PersistIQ
  • Integrates well with tools that work with LinkedIn Sales Navigator to scrap lead emails.
  • Makes it easy to manage large-scale cold email campaigns with 3+ steps.
  • When a prospect replies to an email, it doesn't send them any of the automated emails which allow me to follow-up with those warm leads correctly.

Cons
Hunter
  • Hunter is only as valuable as the information it is able to scrape from the internet. If a company has not listed any email addresses online, then Hunter is not going to be able to find it.
  • Sometimes Hunter is only able to identify non-personal-specific email addresses (ex: info @, support@, etc.). This makes it difficult to identify personnel emails
  • Sometimes companies will have different email domains that Hunter is not able to correlate. For example, when searching for an email address at Lead.com, Hunter is not able to point to ParentCompany.com email addresses that would be more useful.

PersistIQ
  • I wish there was a way to send more than 1,000 emails per day.
  • If it had more integrations with data scrapers or ways to add new leads it would be much better.
  • I'd like a way to go deeper into a lot of my stats on various emails.

Terrible; non-existent. Weeks without replies, and no improvements in 4 months.

Alternatives Considered
Hunter
We have been trying to get lead information on SalesTools and PLENTY, however, these two tools are mostly oriented to create follow-up campaigns and the setup is pretty complicated. If you are looking to create just a list of semi-qualified leads, you may try Hunter, but SalesTools has already an inner feature to build prospects in a better way.

We decided on PersistIQ because it was cheaper than the incumbents and as we were starting we wanted to see if this would be helpful or relevant to us. We later discovered Apollo.io and we might switch to them as they are also cheap and look better, but we might also get back to manual emailing and Linkedin connecting.

Return on Investment
Hunter
  • Positive to be sure. I don't always get the results I want, but I use the free version and I'm satisfied to go there first when I need an email
  • It's a fast quality product. It was better before when it resided on my LinkedIn account, but that's another matter...
