It's well suited for firms with large or growing fleet of devices. I can only say about macOS device management, as for mobile devices we have a different solution. But I had a chance to play around with mobile device management using Jamf on one of the trainings using Sandbox, and I can say that you can totally use it for managing iOS/iPadOS/Android devices as well.
This software is suited in any environment where there are more end user than IT staff, which is pretty much everywhere. This becomes especially true in medium to large sized business and organizations. The amount of time saved (from IT Support and Administration but also from the end user's side) is simply incredible. In addition, Junior IT admins will find the automatic suggestions e.g. for optimal server configurations / setup quite useful.
The only scenario where I'm not sure the benefits will outweigh the costs are in very small businesses, where there are few end users and few PC's/Servers. In all other scenarios, this tool is truly invaluable, compared to the it's low financial cost. I would add that purchasing a perpetual license is also an option with this product and does make financial sense after 5 years or so.
Jamf Pro's Self Service is a great mechanism for making software available to end uses as they need it.
Jamf Pro is also great for creating plans called PreStage Enrollments that allow for computers to skip many of the setup screens, as well as automating account creation.
Jamf Pro in combination with Apple Automated Device Enrollment (formerly DEP) allows for devices to supervised and managed, this combination allows for locking, remote wipe of devices, and finding locations of devices when put into lost mode.
Finding what you need in Jamf Pro can be tough at times. The interface is not what I would call friendly.
You'll need static credentials for Jamf Pro. They don't integrate with the Jamf Account, and it doesn't offer 2FA. SSO is an option, but it's not simple to set up.
More granular access level controls for technicians (restrictions for juniors) on the Mobile Device Management add-on
Monitoring mobile data usage on mobile devices, this has been in the product pipeline for 5 years, but not yet implemented
Ability to remotely support company-owned mobile devices with no end-user permission. End-user needs to allow the remote session, when sometimes that's what we don't want since we're doing an investigation.
We stepped away and are looking at different products that integrate with our entire fleet MDM solution rather than focusing specifically on Apple products. An all in one solution fits our needs better and is more cost-effective in the long run. Jamf Pro needs to improve some features and support but overall its a good product.
Jamf Pro has done pretty much anything we've needed with little setup headache. If we hit a wall, the Jamf user community and tech support departments both are more than willing to help solve problems. Tech support is excellent, but the surprising thing is the user base is by far the biggest resource. Jamf users love to help each other, by directly chatting about issues, posting best practices, or just posting info on the forums.
Jamf Support is very responsive and usually assists in any challenge we are tackling. They are also very transparent when they are allowed to be. I personally love our Jamf Pro support rep and don't fear messaging their support team.
The local distributor of the product is always available, however most support is received within an hour from India. We've had complex requirements and the support team went so far as to customize their mobile application to suit our unique needs. We honestly can't complain about any support we've received and it's always been very quick.
The training session was beneficial because it expanded my knowledge about Jamf products and really learn what I am capable of doing with Jamf Pro in terms of managing Apple computers and devices. Immediately after the training course, I was able to implement what I learn to our cloud instance.
We have a two-page document [that] identifies all the key features and functionality that we rely on while using Jamf Pro to manage our Mac fleet. Each time we're asked to compare and contrast other client management platforms, they all come up quite short of being able to provide the same functionality that we rely on with Jamf Pro. From there we then have to consider [the] cost for additional products to fill the gap, or lower our users' expectations. That is a non-starter.
We had 3 key points in mind on our market research when selected the MDM solution. This where: Best integration across multiple OS vendors; Ease of use of the management console; Licensing model per endpoint and agents. If we were to have a Windows only environment, then Microsoft Endpoint Manager would be the best solution. If the environment would have been exclusively MacOS then Kandji where an option. But for our mixed OS environment we have chosen ManageEngine Endpoint Central.
Jamf [Pro] has made locating iPads during the Pandemic so much easier. With the information provided by Lost Mode, we are able to show the end-user where their iPad was last located. This also allows us to have the iPads returned, even from the opposite coast of the US. This is invaluable and eases the loss of equipment during an already difficult and stressful time.
Jamf [Pro] has allowed one or two people to manage 3000 iPads at four different schools. I know the impact it has had on our little district and I often say that the end-user only sees the magic that happens. It makes it easier for me to make that magic work.
Jamf [Pro] has allowed me to be much more efficient, saving time, which we all know time is money.
Positive - Endpoint Central does a lot! Which gives it an amazing bang for the buck!!!
Positive - Endpoint Central makes various IT management tasks easy.
Negative - I have already mentioned this, but I can't tell you how important this is. Support - it is not great, when you get a ME tech that knows their area, then it is good to great! But it can take effort to reach that person, front line support does their best, but so many of my cases have involved more advanced support. This can take days for someone to get back to me, via email. Often I have open several cases on the same issue before reaching the correct solution.
Lastly - I spent an amazing amount of time in 2021 basically testing the product. So much so that I used that as a negotiation to bring the price down when we renewed.
I seriously considered other products at renewal time. But the discounted price did not come close to my time dealing with Bugs and low quality support.
We stayed with Desktop Central because it was successful in deploying updates - all the rest we could consider a different product if needed.
2022 - as been much better, few bugs and support has improved, but there are still timely support issues.
