Ayden has proved to be much more reliable with transactions and faster at completing them. We also have been benefited by their affordable rates and that it doesn't feel like a scheme to take from our profits. Lastly, the reports they provide help us to know what next steps we …
Chose Adyen
Adyen can support a bit more currencies and credit cards.
In addition their rates were much lower.
The online platform and the reports are convenient to any user.

I have used several tools to manage billing and payments in my job. It was not my choice in my company to use Adyen but we are pretty happy with it. It can be integrated very well with the other tools we use in our job and it is reliable and safe.

Ayden has been a great resource for us with international transactions. We know that they can be a trusted gateway when it comes to dealing with our client's money. Thankful to have that confidence in this system. It also has a user-friendly interface, which allows for a concise process with clients as well.

PayPal
Paypal is great for personal payments as well as business payments for ecommerce of for paying monthly memberships. It is a user friendly software that needs little expertise to get used to. For larger payments, the fees become high therefore it is more suitable for payments of upto few hundred dollars.

PayPal
  • PayPal offers me the option of converting my currency deposited in my account to another currency, so I can complete all kinds of payments and send money to employees who are in another country for business reasons.
  • The mobile phone application is too fast, I can make payments to my employees in a matter of seconds without having to wait for the web version to load.
  • Scheduled payments are great. PayPal allows me to add a list of contacts to my PayPal Business account, and after adding the contacts, I can schedule payments for a specific day and time. It's easier to make automated payroll payments with PayPal.

Cons
Adyen
  • I would like to be able to create my own reports, like a combination between "Received payment details" and "Interactive payment accounting".
  • Maybe you can have a better integration with PayPal. The disputes are reflected all wrong in Adyen, for example if we accept a chargeback in PayPal, in Adyen we see a "chargeback reversed" status first, then we see a "refund" status. This is very confusing for us, we have accepted that chargeback, which means we have lost the case, what are a Chargeback Reversed and a Refund statuses doing here? I think PayPal is trying to unblock the transaction that received the chargeback, but this is a very confusing way of handling the chargebacks. If I look at the "Dispute transaction details" reports, all the PayPal chargebacks are "won" because of that "Chargeback reversed" status, which is obviously wrong, we lose some cases and we win others.
  • Amex chargebacks could be integrated. We don't see them in Adyen at all.

PayPal
  • Sometimes the UX flow would not deliver the customer back to our site, leaving orders in limbo "Pre-approved" status. The customer would call days later asking why we hadn't shipped it.
  • The PayPal logo on the checkout page can be kind of large and obtrusive.
  • They mention new features and programs on their login page, but it's hard to find any details on them deeper in the software.

Response time are as expected, and Adyen team is always knowledgeable and are clear subject matter experts. Quite often I am assigned an engineer who is not in our time zone and sometimes 8-12 hours different from me. This causes delays in resolution due. It would be great to have a support agent who is located in the US.

PayPal
Customer service representatives were unable to explain why customer in Australia were unable to make payments using our link. It turned out that customers in Australia must create an account. PayPal's user interface did not reveal this to our customers in Australia. There was plenty about this issue appearing in online forums and PayPal customer service couldn't explain this. This change in PayPal's usability happened between April and May of 2021 and was done without notice to vendors (like us).

Adyen
Adyen has better handling of Disputes, provides much more detailed forecasts and withdrawal reports. Adyen has a specific page to clear doubts much more complete. Adyen have not fees for processing refunds, have not fess for chargeback received, and have not fees for retry process payments. And your processing fees are very attractive.

I don't think there's really any competition here. There's Venmo (also owned by PayPal) who is now offering business accounts, but it still isn't quite the same. The closest thing in terms of ease of use would be Apple Pay or Google Pay (and there are a handful of others out there, but we offer Apple and Google Pay). As a business, I prefer Apple or Google Pay to PayPal Payments, but we offer either Google or Apple Pay, PayPal, and credit card options and PayPal is always right up there with credit cards. I don't foresee us ever getting rid of PayPal Payments as an option, but we do try to only offer it on request for higher ticket items or high dollar installment purchases.

Return on Investment
Adyen
  • I cannot see any negative impact.
  • It is good to synchronize the payment details that come from Adyem in our CRM and this allows us, now, to manage refunds and subscriptions in there and get any action done in real time and recorded in all the platforms.
  • Quick and reliable it is a good tool to be used for managing and checking credit card transactions details.
