Overall Satisfaction with Cloudflare

  • High Performance
  • HTML as well as traditional CDN caching
  • New features
  • They are raising their prices starting May 2023, so we'll be switching to an annual plan to stay at the same rates.
  • It just works; don't have to think about it most of the time.
  • Saves my customers thousands of dollars a month
  • Fastest initial latency (time to first byte) that I know of any CDN
Akamai and Edgecast/Verizon are way over-priced, and also require hassling sales people to negotiate prices, and cloudflare just has their prices posted, and don't require a multi-year contract, etc.
StackPath is a regular CDN provider, and is probably cheaper than Cloudflare (my customer was paying, I wasn't involved in the billing side), but the feature list is much smaller than Cloudflare, so I converted that customer.
Very easy to work with, and much easier than Akamai that had a 30 day trial period (which apparently started the day I talked to the sales person and not when I actually got access to their system), so after 15 days of trying it out, and waiting multiple days for them to analyze why their system was so slow, they threatened to charge me for breaching the 24 month contract.

Switching to Cloudflare was perfect from day 1.
I've contacted cloudflare a few times over the years, and support wasn't great, but was ok. Fortunately, their product is so good that most of the time I never have to contact them at all.

I have run a web hosting company since 2005. One of those customers has high volume (~5 million monthly visits) and needs fast response time. I used to use Akamai and then Verizon/EdgeCast.

Cloudflare cold-called us and won our business with an enterprise account (which was still significantly lower cost and higher features than either of the previous two). I later switched down to the business account because the performance and support was still better, and I reduced the cost from $5,000 month to $200/month, and have better speed and features.

In short, Cloudflare has been amazing and they are always adding features to make it better. I now have other customers who use the $20 and free accounts, which are quite good as well, and enable me to use a single server for the origination.

The main feature I use is the page rules, where I have customized the rules over the years to be very performant. The automatic firewall rules are handy, and do some blocking without me even having to think about it.

I don't know of any downsides of using their free account, and have debated about moving all of my customers to use their free account and gain those benefits.
