Overall Satisfaction with Mailchimp

Mailchimp is used as the backbone of many of my clients' email marketing efforts to improve their digital marketing strategy. It is used specifically to create marketing emails, sales emails, email auto-responders, email newsletters, targeted ad campaigns and more. It seems to stand out from the competition because it is easy to use and it has budget-friendly entry pricing points.
  • Email automation is game changer for business.
  • Email newsletters are the best use feature.
  • Email analytics are very useful.
  • List segmentation to personalize emails.
  • User interface can be a little better - hard to move quickly sometimes.
  • Audience management takes some training/getting used to.
  • Can falsely "bounce" emails which limits send volume.
  • Mailchimp helps businesses grow their marketing list.
  • By creating emails and newsletters, you can keep prospects and customers engaged.
  • The reporting helps you see what is working and what isn't so you stop wasting time if needed and redirect it to something that works.
  • There is a standard learning curve for teams to adopt Mailchimp and use it properly.
As I mentioned earlier, Mailchimp is a great entry point for small businesses that are looking to target their customer and contact list with segmented email marketing. It is easy enough to use and the price is usually right for the return that is possible when used correctly. It is far better than Pardot, but, once you need more a more robust, enterprise email marketing tool, I tend to recommend HubSpot Marketing Hub.
The usability is great overall, hence the 8 rating, but the reason it doesn't go to a 9 or a 10 is because it isn't always as intuitive as teams would like. Like most tools, there is a user adoption phase that everyone needs to get through before they are using it regularly. As an example, the template builder takes some getting used to.
I don't typically refer to Mailchimp as an all-in-one marketing platform. While it has features that run the gamut of marketing, its focus has always been on email marketing and that is where businesses see the most value. If you need a full platform, this is where HubSpot seems to be the better solution.
Mailchimp has been the right choice for so many clients because they have always wanted to get a newsletter off the ground and sell more via email. As far as lessons go, most organizations quickly learn that if they aren't using the email tools correctly or just "spraying and praying" their lists and hoping something sticks, it likely won't. When Mailchimp is used to send segmented emails with useful content to specific audiences, it can be a game-changer for your business.
To be clear, Mailchimp is usually the right solution for businesses when they are starting out. As an email marketing tool, it has all the features necessary to get your email newsletter off the ground, handle reporting and analytics while also staying relatively easy to use. As your needs and your list become more robust though, there are more enterprise options to consider.
