I use 7Sheep for marketing as a sales person. This works well for me as a single user. I do not think I could use the software together with my colleagues. Although we could have separated lists the access rights might not fit our use case. It has a strong marketing focus and cannot replace a full CRM system.

We love their forms, and the automation you're able to execute post form submission. I would say they are unparalleled in this area. The flexibility and power the automation provides is invaluable, and reduces the overhead with your Salesforce instance. Triggered actions are pretty fantastic as well - love that you're able to trigger things based on "in-time" actions - or now and when they happen in the future, AND you can trigger actions based on PAST actions, based on your custom timeline. Can't tell you how many times that's come in handy! Their data management is absolutely stellar, and the things you're able to do on that front are unrivaled. WYSIWYG is one of the better I've seen (love Unbounce in this area - they're close). Ability to inject forms into your webpages with ease - javascript or static HTML. Ability to capture utm parameters or cookie values is HUGE for us

Pros

  • Sporadic mailings to my clients via the e-mail campaign feature. I create personlised HTML emails with the visual editor and schedule them to be sent during the day when I am on the road.
  • After initial contact with new clients I setup a series of timed emails to stay in contact. Based on flags I have in the system they are automatically adjusted.
  • Existing clients get automated emails after certain events like visits or deliveries.
  • I often get in touch with support to ask for best practice examples and they are always helpful.

  • Automation: unparalleled. The things you're able to do with Marketo can alleviate automation on the Salesforce end, and bring data into the system clean, precise and ready to route before it hits Salesforce.
  • Flexibility: There are SO many things you can do to tweak the system to operate according to your lead / data flow.
  • Targeting - persona, territory, demographic... etc. If you have the data, you can easily get Marketo to slice, dice and precisely target your data.
  • Integrations: They have a ton. The ones they don't, there's third party integrations through Zapier that work pretty well. Super happy on this front.

Cons

  • It would be useful if some standard email templates were available.
  • They could find a way to make the form questions easier/quicker to reorder.
  • I would like to be able to change user roles so that only certain people could see certain contact lists.

  • Predictive lead scoring - make use of AI
  • Revenue analytics - though this can be achieved with integration of other tools but would like to see Marketo give those insights
  • Sales insights - must allow more than 10 filters

With both chat and email support I have always had enough ways to get through to them! Their support is good, honest and most importantly supportive. They helped us set up and start using the tool when we got stuck. Moving from Mailchimp where there were some semantic lessons to learn and they took the time to help us get used to 7Sheep

I had never used Marketo prior to taking this job so online training was my starting point. I was able to follow along, it was interesting and quickly and efficiently taught me what I needed to know without a lot of fluff. It was far from boring and really helped me get my hands dirty with Marketo.

Alternatives Considered

I've used MailChimp before and I liked their product as well, however, data protection is key in our organization. As we are working in multiple countries, some of which have very strict data protection laws, and it was important that we kept the data stored on servers in Europe. MailChimp's servers are in the US, as is the case for many other similar companies. That alone was a major reason for us to go with 7Sheep, which is a European company that keeps all data stored on servers in Europe

Of all the options I've used, Marketo is the most customizable and allows you to have the most control over how it's used. While you can get base level functionality out of any of the marketing automation tools I've tried, if you're looking to do anything unique or innovative, I'd recommend Marketo.

We have noticed performance issues when large jobs are submitted. Typically involving imports or massive data changes but we've noticed slowdowns and bottlenecks.

Return on Investment

  • Definitely increased efficiency! In terms of event organisation and contacts management, I'd say around 70% time is saved in the medium/long run (after getting to grips with the system - but definitely worth the initial time investment).
  • Better service and engagement rate - some of the things which I had to remember to do (like respond to emails or send follow up information) can be taken care of automatically. Often a simple acknowledgement will go a long way...

  • Employee productivity went up a certain degree - but we came from hard coding every single page of our website and building new landing pages. And actually hardcoding forms. So all of those things improved, but then it was "how do I make Marketo do XYZ?" and then there's a time investment there. In the end, productivity went up, but time is spent rigging Marketo instead of doing what we want Marketo do to for us.
  • Increased efficiency for webinars. I suppose they did get a little easier when we finally figured out there was a GTW integration (after 18 months of using both tools separately, just happened to stumble across it one day).
