Act-On

If you are not familiar with Marketing Automation, you should consider whether you have the resources to manage a platform and your content. You do not have to be a techy to work with Act-On, however some HTML and CSS skills come in handy. With Act-On you are up and running in no time. When connecting with a different CRM such as Salesforce, NetSuite, Dynamics or other native integrations, you will learn that Act-On provides all the APIs you need and more importantly all the support you will need.

Iterable

Best Scenarios -Companies looking for an email client that will be able to automate complex marketing campaigns. -Companies looking to explore a comprehensive omnichannel marketing approach. Iterable supports email, app & push notifications, as well as web hooks that can take email actions and convert them to direct mail sends. -Anyone that needs campaign flexibility or unique campaign features (like recurring child campaigns) -Dev teams looking for an easy to implement, easy to understand API.Worst Scenarios-Companies representing more than 500 clients. Iterable has yet to solve many of problems associated with scale and growth. For example: I have projects set up by region or city. My outreach workflows for New York would apply to San Francisco. I want to copy/duplicate the NY project and use the same workflow setup for SF. This is impossible as Iterable exists today. This process requires an operation member to manually rebuild what has already been built in another project.

Pros

  • I have used a number of marketing automation systems over the years from Oracle to Salesforce. However none of these have been as easy to use from a platform perspective.
  • Its very intuitive and in a short period of weeks we have been able to set up the platform, fully integrate it with our systems and create lead scoring and funnel reports.
  • If I am ever stuck our amazing customer success manager is there to help us with weekly calls and demos which focus on our business needs and requirements.

  • The creation of dynamic email templates (i.e. Iterable supports handlebar logic)
  • Clean, flexible, and comprehensive interface for building campaign workflow automation.
  • Amazing support team!

Cons

  • There is only one thing that I can honestly say I wish they would change. If you send an email from Dynamic CRM, it does log the email in the history which is nice. However, you can't preview or view the email in your CRM system. It provides you with a link that drives you out of that system and into Act-On.

  • Could use some templates, no one on the marketing team did HTML templating so we had to rely on tech who was often backed up. Some template builders like MailChimp would help a lot.
  • It is pay per user so that can be annoying for large lists.

It's good, but not quite brilliant. Some parts of the interface are still a bit outdated. The product has been evolving very fast, though, and I believe in a few months it will be up there with the best of them, interface wise as well.

Act-On had a lot of resources, and their staff was great at answering any questions I had to make sure we got started on the right foot. Looking back, I would have preferred some additional training sessions since we didn't have any previous experience with Marketing Automation and best practices.

I had a dedicated integration/setup person who was excellent. And they brought on specialized people as needed to help with certain things (DKIM setup, lead scoring setup, etc).

Alternatives Considered

Compared to SharpSpring, Act-On has it's act together. SharpSpring is obviously a value tool in comparison. Our major issue with SharpSpring was Salesforce integration; we constantly had issues with leads being re-uploaded, data changing or not changing when it was supposed to, or many other syncing issues that caused many headaches and a lot of clean-up time. I did prefer SharpSpring's anonymous visitor tracking and e-mail creation, but it simply wasn't worth the discounted price to deal with the headaches. The ease of setting up automation and integrating it with Salesforce made Act-On 100% worth the upgrade, and I wish we hadn't spent a few months trying to make something else work for us.

I've only used 2-3 email platforms before Iterable, but Iterable is leaps and bounds ahead of the curve. While Iterable is a relatively new company, and has some things to improve upon, I have no major qualms with the business. The majority of my work os spent setting up emails and looking up data in Iterable, so overall, I'd say I'm happy.

Return on Investment

  • Better qualified leads fed into sales
  • Increased volume of leads
  • Significantly higher open rates and clicks
  • We're just beginning to utilize attribution from the point of introduction to the point of conversion which will give us insights into what is effective in producing qualified sales leads.
Jim Lovelady profile photo
  • Positive impact with workflow "cart abandon" emails.
  • Positive impact with the ability to split test emails.
  • Negative impact with Revenue data... not always accurate/tells the whole story.
