ActiveCampaign

ActiveCampaign is perfect for teams that want a lightweight, easy to use email software which still has the ability to deeply integrate with your codebase/business logic (through tagging via their API and automations). It strikes the balance nicely between allowing developers and marketers to collaborate --- simply instruct the developers to tag users appropriately in the business logic / code base, and then the marketers can use AC's automations initiated by a tag to come up with whatever complex follow-up they desire (all without bugging the developers again).

For clients that are looking to send a lot of emails quickly, millions of emails - this is the platform for you. If you are looking to do advanced targeting using behavioral activity from the past, this is not the best platform for making these types of strategies work. It has made strides in that direction but still has a bit to go

Pros

  • The automation interface is fairly intuitive to work through and offers powerful, flexible features.
  • For the price and features it offers, it's the best value of any automation service that exists today.
  • It has a TON of options for the advanced user to tinker and test with.

  • Simple tool. I say simple because it does what it is supposed to with very little issues. We used it to send email to a list and that is it and it worked.
  • Clean interface. The interface was clean, simple and easy to use.

Cons

  • One-to-one email automation (all automations have unsubscribe / impersonal req'd fields)
  • Sometimes the Chrome plugin does not work properly.
  • The email builder could use improvement on the UX end.

  • Support. The support (when needed) was overseas so sometimes it was hard to reach them and sometimes hard to understand what they are saying when talking on the phone.

It would be purely based on costs and whether my organization can afford to continue using the service. The organization is in the middle of product and service transitions from older models, so overall performance beyond the email channel will ultimately decide. If money is affordable, there is no reason we'd leave the Cheetahmail platform.

CheetahMail has a high learning curve to master and requires a lot of backend work with tech teams to set up. Navigation is not the best and everything that should be automated is still extremely manual.

Account reps have a quick response time but a very slow resolution time. Because account reps do not have technical knowledge, there is a long long lead time between flagging a problem and tech team resolution.

Alternatives Considered

Before ActiveCampaign we were using both MailChimp for some stuff as well as Hatchbuck for other stuff. The main reason we went with ActiveCampaign is the comprehensive automated campaigns you can set up. Hatchbuck's automated campaigns were very limited, you couldn't do much behavioral targeting. Same applied for MailChimp, automated features were limited. Plus, with MailChimp your contacts are stuck on one list and you can't easily move them around or segment across lists based on keywords/tags. That's where ActiveCampaign truly shines.

If we are comparing apples to apples for just sending emails, all the tools were about the same. Upload a list, code email, send email. For that they are all pretty much the same. The thing that brings Cheetahmail down is the support. The support is not bad but because they are in a different country it makes it tough to fix issues in a timely manner.

Return on Investment

  • ActiveCampaign is the base of our marketing communications operations. So all the leads that we generate and nurture go through ActiveCampaign, which means most of not all of our revenue directly or indirectly is related to ActiveCampaign. It helps us operate and grow the business.
  • It helps us provide more personalized experience for new leads as well as our existing customers.
  • It makes communication more efficient, especially with the Gmail integration.

  • Overall not a bad tool itself. Support isnt great but for impact to our business it sent email for our client and at the end of the day that is what mattered.
