JIRA

JIRA is a perfect fit for any organization where they have a large "in-flow" of projects, tasks, requests, etc. It helps to visualize who and where the majority of the projects are and how much time is being allotted or can be allotted to a particular task. It is particularly helpful in making sure that each team member is given an equal amount of work (if that is the goal) and seeing where each project stands.

  • JIRA is an excellent tool to connect different teams and work styles in an efficient way, without being too specific for some of them.
  • It has a lot of features and settings to offer which really enable you to plan a task in a very detailed way.
  • Thanks to the different conditions of a task, the status can be tracked easily and everyone always knows who's the one who has to provide input.

Cons

  • A little more customisation of the forms would be fantastic. The interface is simple and helps avoid making problems for yourself, but being able to take out some of the white space and select different fonts or show basic formatting would be a good addition. But such is Airtable I am likely to find out with the right knowledge you can.
  • Not being able to connect "Bases" together. This can be addressed by building all tables you need in to one base and remembering you can always export the data out somewhere else if you need this level of integration.
  • If you are a larger or growing organisation, Airtables flexibility and ease at replacing spreadsheets needs to be managed (or you could replace your uncontrolled Excel addiction with an Airtable one).

  • The new version of JIRA is a bit slow and not responsive.
  • A lot of functionality added has lead to slowness in the tool
  • A click here and there leads to opening a small window for adding comments which can be irritating sometimes.

Sometimes, I have to wait a bit longer but I'm on a low priced option so I understand why. Generally, they're able to provide me solutions to my problems as long as I'm not in a rush.

I used to get immediate support from the Jira helpdesk; also most of my issues are already explained in the user manual which is really helpful.

Take your time implementing Jira. Make sure you understand how you want to handle your projects and workflows. Investing more time in the implementation can pay off in a long run. It basically took us 5 days to define and implement correctly, but that meant smooth sailing later on.

The main reason we chose JIRA over Trello was the ability to host on-premise. Security concerns with our data drove that requirement and is why we ultimately settled on JIRA. JIRA also provided us with integrations we needed to integrate with other tools that we use.

Return on Investment

  • It's too soon to have conclusive evidence of ROI, but I suspect our improved ability to manage our partner and donor relationships will improve, thus leading to positive ROI in the future.
