Arcserve Backup

Easy to create a backup job and restore once configured correctly but it does not run smoothly if the data storage is not correctly allocated.

Veeam Backup

It is very well suited for a VMWare virtual environment. It's easy to configure and easier to the manager. You can configure Veeam Backup & Replication for both full and incremental backups. It is very reliable and doesn't break in the middle of the night. The storage footprint is also quite small and you can configure a backup retention policy to keep good control of it. It is definitely not a great solution if you want to back up your physical server. But if you want to save on the additional cost of buying a separate solution for that, just like we are doing, you can use it to a satisfying level. But do not expect a point in time recovery for physical hosts.

Pros

  • Easy to use.
  • Simple configuration.
  • Easy to customize using script.
Hiroki Nakazato profile photo
  • Veeam Backup is straightforward and easy to manage. Reports can be set up to be emailed daily, so you know when the jobs are complete.
  • Veeam support is easy to contact for assistance. I have opened service requests and support has been very helpful in finding the answers and solutions needed.
  • Veeam works well with Vmware and Dell Data Domain, all are present in our environment.

Cons

  • Linux backup status reports are not as granular as the Windows status reports. Linux email reporting does not include missed backup jobs, backup, or replication failures or success.

  • I want to see improvement in the reporting. I see the data transfer rate and completed times, but I want to know the transfer rate speed, so I can better understand what the network bottleneck is.

Arcserve UDP provides our organization lots of benefits and it is much more than a simple backup and restore solution. We use it for cross platform DR, storage agnostic replications, DR solution instead of VMware SRM and more.

We really like the product and can't really complain about its performance at this point. We've also had it deployed for years and it would be difficult to migrate to another solution, not to mention hard to justify the cost of a new solution when this one is working as well as it is.

Overall we have been very pleased with the solution for our virtual infrastructure. I would not give it 10 because I am not really happy with the troubles we get into while backing up our physical servers directly.

Alternatives Considered

Arcserve UDP is fast, reducing our backup window from +20 hours to less than an hour. Arcserve UDP also has proven itself when restoring databases and files to to the same location or alternate locations quickly and efficiently. We have also successfully created "synthetic" Full backup tapes from the current backup sets

Our other backup software that we use is StorageCraft ShadowProtect. They are both image based backups, both have the ability to do virtual recovery or bare metal restores. Both can mount backups and pull out data easily. Where ShadowProtect shines over Veeam is the resiliency of the backup chain. We're able to store backups for up to a year and be able to recover back that far if we need to. We've had to design different backup jobs that are set at different intervals to be able to store that same long-term archive of data. However, Veeam is MUCH easier on the restoration front. It has the built-in Veeam Explorers, and the Instant-VM recovery is superior because it's much simpler and it uses the CPU/RAM of a VM host instead of the server running the recovery.

Return on Investment

  • Deploying Arcserve UDP with the "copy-to-tape" option allowed us to reuse well over 50 LTO5 tapes used by our previous backup solution. Further, we extended data retention on site (maintaining monthly backups on disk) as well as extending off site data retention on tape.

  • Veeam was able to take over the backups from our previous product with no problem and provide us with features we didn't have before!
  • It was very easy to setup backup jobs and keep our environment
  • We are able to use Veeam to migrate VMs from one environment to another with ease and less downtime than using other tools.
