Arcserve Backup

Restorations are easy and painless. These Arcserve appliances have exceeded my expectations. Our daily “bread-and-butter” operations revolve around web servers and databases. I feel more confident than ever that file/database recovery operations will continue to be successful. These appliances live up to their claims.

Veeam Backup

Veeam Backup is a great addition to most environments. I would be hesitant in an environment where Veeam doesn't officially support a specific product class or OS level. You want to make sure if there is an issue that the Veeam Support is able to assist you.

Cons

  • Virtual Standby is limited to Windows only

  • Free version has limited functionality - The free version of Veeam Backup & Replication offers only very basic backups, and doesn't work well with free versions of VMware ESXi as a result.
  • Cost goes up with lots of cores - While generally quite affordable on the lowend, Veeam can get costly if you're backing up a large number of ESX hosts with a large number of CPU's and cores, especially with the Enterprise and Enterprise Plus versions.
  • Can require a dedicated admin in larger environments - Veeam is very hands-off for many installs, but some Enterprises with a large number of VM's and ESX hosts may require a dedicated admin to manage Veeam.

Arcserve UDP provides our organization lots of benefits and it is much more than a simple backup and restore solution. We use it for cross platform DR, storage agnostic replications, DR solution instead of VMware SRM and more.

We really like the product and can't really complain about its performance at this point. We've also had it deployed for years and it would be difficult to migrate to another solution, not to mention hard to justify the cost of a new solution when this one is working as well as it is.

Overall we have been very pleased with the solution for our virtual infrastructure. I would not give it 10 because I am not really happy with the troubles we get into while backing up our physical servers directly.

When I needed support I was able to call and get assistance from a live person very quickly. They were very helpful with all aspects of the software from installation and configuration issues to recovery and everyday maintenance issues

Alternatives Considered

It is easy to deploy and manage. Solid data recovery and good notification option. We need to backup to tape to retain 7 years thus D2D2T is a good option to have.

While Backup Exec is a good product, it isn't nearly as robust or easy to use as Veeam. It isn't ideal for backing up large numbers of VM's, and it also requires that an agent be installed in each VM, which can be both problematic and intrustive to user experience

Return on Investment

  • Deploying Arcserve UDP with the "copy-to-tape" option allowed us to reuse well over 50 LTO5 tapes used by our previous backup solution. Further, we extended data retention on site (maintaining monthly backups on disk) as well as extending off site data retention on tape.

  • Helped standardize backups - Veeam helped us achieve consistent, reliable backups at a fairly reasonable cost. Having dependable backups is very important.
  • Increased executive faith in IT - With backups being more consistent and readily available, executive trust in IT's recovery and disaster recovery increased substantially.
  • Easier Disaster Recovery - Veeam makes disaster recovery, especially across data centers, fairly painless. It's easy to restore a VM that lived in one datacenter, to another datacenter. This is critically important when outages occur.
