Articulate 360

In the case of software launches for applications that have typical workflows, Articulate 360 is great to create on demand e-learning. You can include live demos, videos, self-paced presentations, knowledge checks, etc... You can also record scoring and return that information to your LMS. this is great where there might be a level of compliance checking in your organization. When mastered, it is also possible to create simulations within the modules as well. The ability to branch and lead the end user in different paths is a great strength as well.Articulate 360 is less suited for more passive learning material. If the need is for a demo only, other tools to record screen capture and creating videos might be more appropriate. However if it needs to be used within your LMS system, you could still use Articulate to output the module. For simple cases, though, Articulate might be overkill for what you need.

Articulate Studio

Use it when your development time is short, your budget is low or when you know that the learning content will have to be updated soon or very often. I don't think it is the appropriate tool if you plan do deliver a high-interactive content, but it is possible to test it using the trial version of the product and then understand if Studio is the tool you need.

Pros

  • Articulate Review is the single greatest addition to the Articulate set of tools in the 4.5 years I've been using the product. It makes course review a cinch, and eliminates all of the headaches that come from reviewing courses on an LMS or via a hacked together Google Drive/Dropbox solution.
  • Rise is an incredibly quick, easy way to build quick, beautiful, content driven courses that are mobile friendly and responsive. It's drag and drop, which makes it fun to use, and web-based, which allows developers to build content on the go without needing access to their primary machine.
  • Peek (the screen recorder tool) is a big improvement over Articulate Replay from a simplicity perspective. It records the screen as a discreet taskbar icon, rather than a full program, and then allows you to edit and use that content in your software package of choice. I love it.

  • Easy to use. Articulate Studio is based on PowerPoint so no advanced technical competencies are required. It is a great tool for rapid learning content development.
  • Packaging and exporting. It does a quite good job while exporting the content in several different formats. So, if you need to publish it on LMS platforms compatibles to e-Learning standards (such as SCORM), Articulate Studio will do it for you.
  • Media and quizzes. It is easy to embedd media resources (such as video and audio) to provide a more engaging learning content. The testing feature is also interesting and provide simple but nice functionalities.

Cons

  • I occasionally have issues with the launcher in 360, and can't get the program to open. It seems to be an intermittent bug on my computer that has to do with being enterprise-locked. The first time this happened, I reached to Articulate's world-class support, who helped me get up and running again. I've been able to fix the issue subsequently by following the instructions provided by the Articulate folks, so I'm happy with that!
  • I would like to see further integration with TinCan API (xAPI) in the platform. Right now, I believe that TinCan is only supported in Storyline, and that the statements it is capable of sending to an LRS system are limited to 6 canned verbs. While that is fine, there is no native support for sending variables directly to an LRS without doing some XML tweaking behind the scenes. I'd like to see Articulate lead the industry in xAPI use cases and support, since I hope that's the direction that the industry is headed.
  • I say this every time I have an opportunity, but I'd love to see Articulate develop a native version for the Mac. I've had some success running Storyline 360 on my Mac with Parallels and VMWare Fusion, but I'd like to free up my system resources to edit video AND develop courses, which is difficult to do when you're running a virtual machine.

  • Interaction level is basic. Studio does not provide features to develop a high-interactive content. That's why Articulate released another tool called Storyline, which is much more sophisticated.
  • Pricing is high. I think Studio is overpriced considering other tools available (including Storyline). Articulate did not release new updates of Studio in the last few years.
  • Lack of evolution. There was not a new release or update of Studio in the last few years (since 2013). It seems that Articulate is not investing on this product anymore.

This is very useable software even for novice eLearning authoring users. People with some PowerPoint experience should be fine with this software and even Excel!

Overall support is great for issues that they are able to help with. Other times it seems like instead of fixing the bugs you are told to wait for the newest version so instead of getting a fix for free you have to pay to upgrade. I have found this frustrating

Alternatives Considered

It's about 6 one way half a dozen the other. Articulate provides a robust amount of tools and different suits we have taken advantage of. Members of the team also had spent the majority of the time in this suite and we rebuilt old content using Articulate so it became our main tool for that reason alone.

I have used Captivate, Articulate Studio, Storyline 1 and StoryLine2 and participated in the beta tests for Articulate 360. Studio is the simplest of the items. I like any of the Articulate products more than Captivate. It has a steep learning curve and I don't think course change is nearly as easy if you need to do updates or changes.

Return on Investment

  • We have provided deep thorough curriculum to a variety of audiences within our company using Articulate. Because of this tool we have quickly built out libraries of high-quality training to consumption that has directly positively influenced our bottom line. We're able to quickly and interactively get new hires trained with fun beautiful training using this tool.

  • Our organization must create training for individual locations that may have as few as 2 and as many as 50 employees. When you do that you can't purchase training and you need to make a lot of site specific courses even to separate video components. This is a cost effective way of providing for that need.
  • The negative might be the cost of the software if you are not going to use it for a large quantity of course work.
