Articulate 360

If you are looking for a suite of tools to support every type of eLearning development that you could imagine, look no further. Articulate 360 supports PowerPoint native course creation in Studio 360, Rapid eLearning Development with robust configuration and interactivity options in Storyline 360, a responsive drag-and-drop creation tool in Rise, and a time-saving godsend of a review tool in Articulate Review. The mere fact that Articulate throws a huge content library on top of that is incredible icing on the cake.

Articulate Studio

Articulate Studio is fantastic for sharing information based eLearning content that can be developed quickly and easily by developers who are not well versed in programming, scripting or graphic design. It is less appropriate for eLearning that requires simulations or complex interactions as the bulk of the content is derived from templates.

Pros

  • I love the addition of Review. It allows us to send items to external customers for their review and feedback as well as allows me to comment back via one location. When you update and re-publish you can update the item they can see. I did stumble across the fact that if you have multiple people working on a project and they publish and send a link to the customer it is saved into their own 360 site. I need to explore this more to see if there is a way to make a collaborative site that two people can update to. If not, it is important to be aware that you need to send the updated links to your co-worker too or they won't see comments made on the newer items published by a different person. We ran into this because I had to go out of town and someone else had to help with some updates.
  • Storyline is something I have been using since it came out and wow, it has come a long way in a relatively short time. I have to say my favorite thing about the software though is the collaborative site to teach people on how to use it and to collaborate with others. It is unlike any other support/tutorial site I have ever used. I also like Storyline because it is robust but user-friendly. You can make very simple or very complex items based on your skill set. There is also a newly updated content library full of great resources to use in your training. I feel like the access to this has really opened up options for our training programs.
  • Another thing I really like it the ability to change your design view for PC to tablet to mobile...seamlessly. This is huge! As the world turns more to mobile learning this is a great way to see what you have done and how it will transfer between formats.

  • Integrating very well with PPT
  • Allow authors to create ad-hoc video and audio clips on the spot
  • Easy to export SCORM formats for LMS integration
  • Supplies rich library of stock graphics, footage and 'characters' to allow for fast build out

Cons

  • Just released, so still a few things to iron out.
  • Price point is high for freelancers, but hopefully this will be addressed.
  • Not the ground breaking update to Storyline 2 that I expected, but this is NOT Storyline 3, so I'm happy with this.
  • Studio and Replay seem a bit unnecessary now and could perhaps take efforts away from the more useful components of the suite.

  • I wish Articulate had a plan for subscriptions. Updates comes so fast and pricing is expensive. Subscriptions would allow developers to have most updated version of the software whenever they need. We all know our customers are not as fast as the software updates and it's good to have the most up-to-date version of the software without having to purchase it each time (SL 1 vs. SL 2).
  • Closed Caption programing is a hassle currently. I understand that slide notes work as an alternative text, but most customers would like to see the "CC" button and read the text along with the narrator. It takes lots of steps to program the closed caption button. Captivate has a better solution at the moment.

This is very useable software even for novice eLearning authoring users. People with some PowerPoint experience should be fine with this software and even Excel!

Overall support is great for issues that they are able to help with. Other times it seems like instead of fixing the bugs you are told to wait for the newest version so instead of getting a fix for free you have to pay to upgrade. I have found this frustrating

Alternatives Considered

Articulate 360 takes a slightly different approach to multi-device support compared to other authoring tools. Instead of true responsive design, which requires at least twice as much time to develop, it strikes a balance with the addition of the responsive player. Although having a single layout for every device may not meet all needs, it helps to make development as efficient as possible while minimizing overall time/effort for turnaround. Where Articulate 360 really outperforms the competition is the inclusion of multiple tools in a single ecosystem—this allows for deeper integration between tools.

For a simple, quick course development and deployment, Studio is an excellent tool. Storyline creates more sophisticated results, and Captivate allows for excellent simulation-based courses, but for a typical, quick turnaround that doesn't require sims or sophistication, Studio is a great option. iSPring is a decent alternate, but I prefer Studio because of the eLearning Heroes community - you cant beat that!

Return on Investment

  • There has been a positive impact for our support efforts with the addition of Peek's integration with Review. Specifically, it's reduced time to provide just-in-time support for our developers by being able to quickly record, upload, and share a screen-cast with our remote team.
  • We have had some difficulty with upgrading existing projects to the new platform, but mostly due to them not being previously tested for HTML5/mobile. It's unclear whether or not this is due to underlying bugs in the new A360 software, or unidentified issues in the initial files. But having the ability to work with Articulate Support is making a world of difference.
  • The new mobile player has better positioned us to offer mobile device support, despite not offering true responsive design. It strikes a nice balance between development effort and versatility for multi-device support.

  • My clients see huge returns, especially on compliance training that they've converted from ILT to eLearning using Studio.
  • Orientation costs for new hires can be significantly reduced by building a learner-led course shell that includes some self directed learning outside of the course itself.
