Code42 (formerly CrashPlan)

Code42 is great for individuals or small businesses who want to run large/unlimited backups at a low cost. The price coupled with great customer service make this a company I hope to stick with for a very long time. Be prepared for large backups to take a good deal of time to complete (though this will also vary dependent on your internet connection). If you find the desktop client to be underwhelming or confusing, just chat with an agent to resolve your issue

Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365

Anyone running an enterprise that relies on Office365 should consider Veeam for O365. Nobody is immune from data loss and this is a simple, easy to implement solution to protect your Office365 data. If you're already a Veeam Backup and Replication customer, it's a no-brainer to add this to your toolbelt. I have never met anyone who regretted having more backups.

Pros

Code42 (formerly CrashPlan)

  • Code42 is an extremely powerful and flexible backup program with multiple options of what files to backup, how often to back them up, how much CPU should be used during backup operations (both when a user is present and away), how much bandwidth should be used during backup (again both while a user is present and away), and a multitude of other options.
  • Unlike a number of other cloud-based backup services, Code42 can backup network drives (such as those from a Synology NAS) - this makes setting up a backup system a lot more simple and cost-effective, as you can connect multiple network drives to a single computer - and backup both that computer and the attached network drives.
  • Code42 keeps your backup history indefinitely. This means that if you delete a file, a year goes by, and you need to recover that file, you can use Code42 to do that. Most other cloud-based backup services only keep history for around 30 days before deleting them from the backup archive.
  • Another powerful feature, Code42 allows you to not only back up to the CrashPlan Central cloud, but also to an external drive or network drive. Essentially, you can use Code42 as an all-in-one backup solution for both local and cloud backups. The local backups are heavily compressed with data deduplication to save space on the backup destination, thus allowing you to keep a long history of backups.
  • The cloud-based backups can be heavily encrypted with a custom made encryption key that even Code42 can't recover.

Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365

  • Easy to use cloud backup.
  • More stable server to not lose information from my files.
  • Increased security against intrusion and data theft.
  • I access backups from anywhere; Another advantage for me is that I can access the information from anywhere at the moment.
  • We save costs by hiring the service with respect to having our own servers
  • We have a more scalable and upgradeable service to new technological improvements at the software and hardware level
  • Access to information almost instantly as long as you have a good Internet connection

Cons

Code42 (formerly CrashPlan)

  • The first backup is taxing on the system. Some users report that their computers become almost useless. You can set maximum usage and idle time usage parameters but the original backup is still time and resource consuming. Be prepared.
  • The initial setup is lengthy and confusing. If it weren't for the walkthrough with the technical support administrator, I would never have attempted it.
  • Feedback from the admin portal is non-existent. We had multiple systems whose backups wouldn't start and finally realized, through other means, that we were out of licenses.
  • Users can stop and disable the service.

Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365

  • Instead of "Backup everything" I would like the ability to "Backup everything Teams," "Backup everything Exchange," etc. Since we aren't backing up all user accounts I have to manually add new Teams to a second job.
  • When buying more licenses you have to merge the license files together in the portal; this could be done better.
  • Reports could be more detailed when something goes wrong.

It fulfils all of the requirements my company has for a backup solution, and personally I find it the most suitable product I've ever used for backing up mailboxes, due to the ease of restoring items

Veeam is incredibly easy to use and setup. If you already have an existing Veeam environment, it ties into it very nicely by allowing you to use existing repositories or Object storage that you have in your environment. The restore process is pleasant and intuitive as well. Backups can be very simple or you can pick and choose exactly what you want backed up

The good news is that we have not had a need for very much support at all from CrashPlan Pro; however, their support model while adequate does not set them apart from other vendors. CrashPlan Pro has sufficient and adequate support but is not always the easiest to use or find what you are looking for.

We have encountered a few major issues when integrating with Azure platform and we were consulting those with Veeam Software support team. We were generally glad to get quick and professional help, which enabled us to finalize the integration really fast. Their ticketing system seems to work efficiently, without unnecessary delays. It is also worth to mention, that the Veeam Knowledge Base helps to solve different kinds of issues with a minimal effort needed.

Alternatives Considered

We compared CrashPlan with other choices and they were either too expensive or didn't have the backup capacity we required at the time. For lack of a better solution, we were very close to signing with Mozy, and this was years ago when CrashPlan was still a new player in the market. I found them at the eleventh hour and started the product comparison. Mozy couldn't offer us unlimited storage space and when we found that CrashPlan could, it was almost a no-brainer. Carbonite was a close contender as well, but if I recall correctly, they didn't offer enterprise level pricing that we were looking for (note, this was years ago and their current offerings may be different).

Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365

We evaluated Rubrik recently when needing to replace our current backup targets, and of course, that fell into possibly replacing Veeam as well, since Rubrik is a single ecosystem. Though their products are overall impressive, the initial cost was intimidating, and in the case of Office 365, as of the end of 2019 they were just starting to move out a GA solution. Though from what I saw the solution checked several boxes, it was clearly a v1.0 product, and would definitely need a few years before it could compete with where Veeam is already.

Return on Investment

Code42 (formerly CrashPlan)

  • The licensing cost is negligible on our budget, but the return and peace of mind is significant. It has already saved our butts against ransomware viruses and we've lost data in natural disasters before - now we're prepared if it happens again!

Veeam Backup for Microsoft Office 365

  • It has streamlined several processes.
  • Empowered HelpDesk technicians to restore and capture user data with escalating tickets or issues to Tier 2.
  • It has helped us restore email and files of users who would have otherwise lost their data or files.
