Overall Satisfaction with PagerDuty
PagerDuty handles our on-call alerting. This means when we have production level outages or issues, they get sent to PagerDuty and PagerDuty has a schedule for our on-call engineers and can send texts, emails, Slack notifications, and phone calls to the correct person to handle. Within PagerDuty we setup schedules so we know who is primary and who is secondary on-call so that way we always have coverage.
Pros
- alerts
- schedule creation
- on-call rotation
- integration to other apps
Cons
- integration FROM other apps
- Make the on-call schedule easier to see/read
- schedule on-call rotation
- integration to apps
- consistent timely alerts
- increase alert response time
- decrease outage time
- decrease outage occurrences
PagerDuty has always been up and sent alerts as they happen in real time. We have yet to have any issues with this and is one reason why PagerDuty is so effectively used by our organization. Downtime by cloud providers or by issues within our stack architecture is enough and PagerDuty allows us to stay within our SLA's.
We use the integrations for quite a few other apps/technologies. We integrate from CloudWatch (in AWS), Azure, and with New Relic. We also send alerts from PagerDuty to Slack and email. The ease of setup for these integrations is important as we don't want to spend tons of time setting them up and PagerDuty has made it very easy, in some cases just a few clicks.
We do not currently use this feature but it is one we have on our roadmap to be able to increase our response time, decrease our outage time and to decrease the amount of time on-call engineers spend on issues after hours.
This is also a feature we are not currently using. We have explored this and see great benefit for it but it is not something we have put on our roadmap as of now only due to having other items of higher priority. This feature would give us some good data on our alerts and what we can do better.
I have not use the 2 technologies for as long as I have used PagerDuty but in my opinion PagerDuty makes things a lot easier. The other tools got the job done and got alerts out but PagerDuty just seemed to make the setup for on-call alert schedules and integrations easier than the others. This isn't to say the others are difficult, just that PagerDuty was slightly better. I also have noticed that more tools have options to integrate to PagerDuty over the other tools.
