Overall Satisfaction with PagerDuty

PagerDuty for us is a critical tool, rather it's for after-hours paging or raising awareness of a critical issue during the day. Part of being an IT is managing multiple systems, which can be on-prem or in the cloud, and when these systems have issues or are down, we need to get timely alerts from our RMM tools. PagerDuty makes this possible; using their application, we can set on-call rotations, backups, holidays, and substitutes and make sure that we have a hand on the wheel when things get bumpy. PD can tie directly into applications as a 3rd party plugin, which as the #1 solution, is widely supported, or there is the option for SMTP triggers. Businesses need PD, so IT can get those critical alerts to keep the business on track. I have tried comparable solutions and always find myself coming back to PD.
  • Paging the tech on call, via app or phone call.
  • SMTP and plugins to connect with a wide range of systems.
  • Great automation with on call schedules, and ability to adjust schedule on the fly.
  • I would like to see the price come down to something that is more manageable for smaller teams.
  • More reliable Android app.
  • Would like to see a desktop agent for techs that are at a screen all day.
  • Paging
  • Schedule
  • Various integrations.
  • For smaller, leaner IT Departments, the cost is an issue that has forced us to find an alternative or go with a competitor. Though valuable, some companies would see this as a luxury for IT.
  • PD is reliable for getting the alerts on time, with backup techs.
  • Love the schedule.
In the 9-years I have worked with PD, never have I experienced a time when the service was down. Talking with other IT colleagues, the opinion on PD is mutual, and that it is the best reliable solution.
Mostly we use integrations with RMM tools, SolarWinds, and ticket systems. Where there may not be an integration, we are able to take advantage of the SMTP alerts. A ServiceNow plugin would be nice, but there are still ways to make PD work with ServiceNow.
We used Automic for some of our nightly automation, which had run decks integrating into various systems to mirror our production systems into our dev environment to keep the environments 1:1. Often, something would stall, and we would need to be notified so a tech can connect, and we can restart a process. Similar processes are used so to import bank and financial information, and the consequence of the automation not going through would have a major monetary impact on the business. PD came through every time, so we could get things back on track!
Did not use this function in PD.
PD is a set-it-and-forget-it solution. The application is reliable, has many features, and will drag a tech out of the deepest sleep so to put out a fire. OpsGenie is clunky at best. It can work, but the paging is unreliable, the schedule is a nightmare, and the integrations are limited.

Do you think PagerDuty delivers good value for the price?

No

Are you happy with PagerDuty's feature set?

Yes

Did PagerDuty live up to sales and marketing promises?

Yes

Did implementation of PagerDuty go as expected?

Yes

Would you buy PagerDuty again?

Yes

What more can I say? The solution is robust and reliable. The best case I have is where PD didn't only get a tech involved at the right timing but saved a fortune in IT and Electrical Controls equipment and allowed us to prevent the risk of a wastewater treatment plant in the desert from shutting down due to extensive damage. PD paged a tech after an environment management system notified us that AC went down and the temperature was rapidly rising. Had the room gotten too hot, millions of dollars of equipment would have been lost, and the water supply for a city impacted. We got the page just in time, got a tech on-site to repair the AC, and there was no impact to the city or monetary loss.
