3dcart

3dcart works well for small to medium size businesses that want to take care of their own website and product uploads and have the time to stay on top of inventory management. It does not work as well for a business who wants to just "turn it on" and forget about it unless they are able to integrate their POS system with 3dcart to manage inventory.

SFCC is a robust, reliable platform for businesses requiring a cloud-based solution that requires limited development and upkeep. Challenges do come with SFCC should you require heavy customisation.

Pros

  • SEO - 3dcart is built in such a way that even if you do no SEO work at all, as long as you use the meta description wizard on each page or product you wind up still searching pretty well in Google.
  • Product uploads - Product uploads are easy to do with 3dcart's .csv import/export feature. No need to struggle with messy simple and variable uploads like on WooCommerce, 3dcart takes the guesswork and hassle out of uploading different product types.
  • Media uploads - Media uploads are quick and simple and the uploader always works.

  • Being a global brand, having a solution that works globally was key. SFCC is particularly good for allowing easily implementations and deployments of global solutions
  • SFCC is a scalable solution which supported our need to roll out global sites quickly
  • The vendor marketplace is used to find vendors and solutions who have pre-existing implementations and code templates, meaning it’s more cost effective to deliver
  • With speed being such a crucial factor these days, SFCC is excellent at optimising performance. Whether it be server capacity around crucial events or a CDN that can deliver pages and content in a balanced and optimal way
  • The SFCC roadmap is impressive. They have been good at understanding client requirements and including solutions to the core platform - i.e Apple Pay or GDPR

Cons

  • 3dcart does not connect to many of the POS systems my clients use so we need to manually update inventory daily/weekly.
  • There are many modules available to do many different things, but it makes you feel like you are being tickled and died to death to get the site to do exactly what you want. Also can be confusing if you don't know what you actually need.
  • It's a little difficult/confusing to upload products with multiple variations - ie: color and size - especially if there are multiples colors and multiple sizes.

  • Image Management - Through Demandware's Business Manager, loading, assigning and maintaining images in the Product Catalog is a bit cumbersome. Granted, our current implementation doesn't take advantage of DW's Image Management that allows clients to load a single, high resolution image that gets dynamically scaled throughout the site so we load several versions of each product image in each size we need. This certainly compounds the complexity of a tedious task. Moving to Image Manager is expected to reduce some of this frustration.
  • Business Manager - The backend management tool for Demandware could use some UI improvements. The company has a plan to make merchandising and catalog management more WYSIWYG, but has delayed implementation of the improvements. My opinion is if the tool is not ready, then don't force it going live.
  • URL Management - Historically, we have had challenges with the way Demandware handles URLs. Specifically, it used to append required elements that diminished SEO effectiveness and URL "cleanliness". Additionally, we've had challenges with redirects resulting in endless loops, etc. In 2013 the company addressed many SEO challenges and these improvements have had a positive impact at Urban Decay. Interestingly, today, as I write this review, Demandware pushed a new code version that is expected to address some remaining issues with redirects and other SEO-related issues.

Not applicable - as a franchisee, the franchiser took over the web site and shopping cart capabilities, so I no longer need the tool. But I would recommend it.

A huge factor influencing our decision to remain on the Demandware platform is that our new parent company is standardizing all its luxury brands in the US on it. We are fortunate. However, even if we had remained an independent company, I believe we would continue on the Demandware platform for all the reasons outlined in this review. I appreciate the stability the platform has provided to our eCommerce site in the last three years as well as the continuous improvements and technological advances being rolled out that will allow us to keep the site fresh, engaging, modern and stable. I've heard many horror stories from colleagues on other platforms who struggle with the expense and complexity involved with making what should be minor and simple changes and updates to their sites.

They are very responsive and a support technician will be assigned quickly. Even if there is further clarification needed for the ticket, or a solution is not immediately available, you feel that someone is there and staying on top of the issue. Most common issues are resolved quickly and satisfactorily.

We selected Demandware as it is easy to use but also robust enough to build a good site foundation and effectively manage many of our online marketing channels.
