I think it is good to keep in mind the type of business application you have in mind when selecting Media Optimizer for your company. For us, as an agency, it makes sense for us to utilize the reporting and paid search optimizing portions for our clients as we manage over 300+ clients PPC campaigns. With this tool it is possible to set up campaigns easily and as long as the parameters are set correctly within the portfolio, there is a great opportunity for the tool to do its job and use the simulation/modeling process to run and grow a paid search campaign with ease of human interaction.

Marin Software

It's well suited when you have to integrate it with another data source, like an FTP for example. The dimensions you can assign to campaigns or ad group levels help for easier performance management and reporting.What makes it difficult is that everytime you need to update anything on the account, you can't use the publisher but have to do it through Marin. This makes the whole process very time consuming and causes more mistakes. Also if you have paused anything on the publisher and you don't remember to sync marin after, all changes on the publisher will get lost if you make new changes on marin

Pros

  • The implementation process is very streamlined as far as single site implementation. Once installed and your desired tracking metrics are rolling in. It is easy for you to build your portfolios to be modeled to achieve these goals and do it in the most efficient way.
  • The reporting aspect of the program also is one of its greatest benefits. No longer do you have to base the success of a paid search campaign on blurry metrics like CTR and SERP rankings. Media optimizer gives you the ability to track complete conversions all the way back to the paid ad that resulted in conversion, as well as the keyword that was searched.
  • Before the actual optimization process begins, and the dollars start being spent, there is a period of learning for the tool that allows it to conduct hypothetical, but statistical based modeling that allows you to see what sort of optimization to expect before turning on the tool and spending actual budget.

  • Consolidation of multiple accounts. Google, Bing, other...all in one place. This is why reporting is based out of Marin. One data source vs. many.
  • Bid management for financial goals. Setting a cost-per-conversion goal allows Marin to maximize conversions by adjusting bids up and down. Performance increases are amazing!
  • Reporting. Flexibility of reports is pretty cool.

  • The product is expensive.
  • The product sometimes has issues recognizing our users and remembering their profile information.
  • The product can be challenging when gathering specific reports.

  • Ad extensions - the process for adding/editing ad extensions is cumbersome and needs to be completed in both the tool and the engines themselves. Not consistently supported between extension type or even engines. Process for editing is not nuanced and not intuitive.
  • Pivoting features - it would be great if there were a pivot table-like functionality where you could look at aggregated data directly in the UI without having to pull a report.
  • Budget pacing - no budget pacing functionality is available which is a key piece of our day-to-day campaign management.
  • Bidding - bidding folders are clunky and do not support more nuanced/advanced calculations.
  • Data by device - the current format is extremely clunky and doesn't easily translate into an Excel or pivot table. This functionality needs to be improved and more consistent with the typical views in the UI.
  • Non-keyword based campaigns - the platform does not support direct UI management of non-KW based campaigns such as YouTube and GDN display.

It has performed well above our expectations and has given us the time we'd be better off spending on building new strategies and customer development, over manual PPC campaign management. The ROI far exceeds what we could have promised on our own with many clients and we wouldn't want to give up that kind of almost guaranteed ROI for our clients.

Since contract is month-to-month, there is little risk associated with contract renewal. I also enjoyed customer service and the fact that our CRM was integrated to better target our end user and deliver a higher profit to the company, to meet business goals. I believe Marin is one of the leading bid management software tools available on the market.

It definitely takes some instruction to get to be able to use the system. One would struggle trying to get it to work without any previous experience with it. If you are famailiar with the interface it is actually quite fast and easy to maneuver around.

Interactive helpful videos, summaries, and quizzes help a user learn the platform in demo-mode. The only challenge was that once you clicked certain buttons per instructions, you couldn't necessarily go back to retake notes without redoing the entire module.

Alternatives Considered

I think it's a good way to automate and take more control during the digital advertising process.You can have access to a lot of data, spreadsheets and statistics, but that is difficult to manage at the beginning.
