Alteryx Analytics Gallery

Alteryx Analytics Gallery is perhaps less suited if you need an immediate answer to a problem. Each use case requires some understanding of the workflow to implement.

Tableau Server

Tableau Server should be considered in organizations where you have several consumers of data and fewer creators. The licensing of the server will make you save and allow you to have some governance over your dashboards. In an environment where you have a lot of creators, the use of a server might not bring a lot of benefits, because creators using the desktop version can open and modify other people's dashboards.

Pros

  • Allows users to implement new ideas and workflows
  • Allows users to share solutions to business problems
  • Aides in knowledge transfer and thought leadership

  • Tableau server's portal and general look is really convenient and pretty. Users feel comfortable using it.
  • The learning curve of Tableau Server from an end-user perspective is really short. For the creator of content, it is a little more complex but easy to learn. Tableau has really succeeded in creating a user-friendly software.
  • From an administration point of view, Tableau is great. Installation and housekeeping are really easy and quick.
  • Visuals are really appealing and will help "sell" your presentations.
  • Tableau allows connectivity to a huge selection of data sources and data formats.
  • Online training for software is free and of very good quality.

Cons

  • Due to the popularity of the Gallery, finding the exact solution to a problem may be difficult if the solution [isn't] titled correctly.
Michael Wallendjack profile photo
  • Tableau doesn't (at least when I used it) have custom widgets or elements in the creation of dashboards. Its main competitor, Power BI, allows this. Because of that, some visualizations are challenging and need the use of advanced tricks that most users don't know about.
  • Tableau logs a lot of information, and sometimes, getting the right information from these logs when something goes wrong is challenging.
  • Tableau support is not the quickest. This sounds bad, but I have to specify that I very rarely had to contact them. However, when I did, the answer took a few more days than with other providers.

I think the use case we described earlier about a non-technical user that was copying/pasting data into Word during emergencies is our best reason. This person had little technical ability, and the Tableau mobile solution powered by Tableau server completely resolved the issues. She has since become one of the most vocal proponents of Tableau.

Unlike the BIG BI vendor solutions, Tableau server specializes in delivering Dashboards to desktops, tablets and mobile devices via http. This masterful decision to specialize in a few things as opposed to being marginally viable at many things is a winning approach in my opinion. This approach has allowed Tableau to deliver it's server product in a shrink wrapped package that's a pleasure to manage.

Due to it's skillful use of in-memory processing and columnar data structures ensures optimal performance. However, with larger data sets, especially with LIVE connections to back-end DBMS platforms, performance degrades quickly. However, with minimal planning and Tableau data extracts, exceptional performance is achievable.

In our case, they hired a private third party consultant to train our dept. It was extremely boring and felt like it dragged on. Everything I learned was self taught so I was not really paying attention. But I do think that you can easily spend a week on the tool and go over every nook and cranny. We only had the consultant in for a day or two.

My department was largely Excel and paper-based when I started, so there's been a tremendous amount of work to get the data into shape, so when I look at the overall implementation of our visualization and reporting infrastructure, I'm less satisfied. Tableau has been wonderful, the one place that would get me to a 10 is if it was easier to tune workbook performance on Tableau Server, there are a huge number of variables to deal with across the workbook/application/hardware stack. In a small environment like ours that takes more effort than I'd like.

There were a lot of reasons why we chose Tableau and the least is the cost but also the way Tableau stores data in the columnar fashion instead of in Cubes. We went through a painstaking selection process and at the end, came down to a couple of vendors and we ended up with the product that was least to pair up with Amazon Web Services to create a decent and cost-effective proof of concept and we landed with the solution we have today.

Return on Investment

  • We believe that our deployment of Tableau Server has had a large positive ROI for emergency preparedness. While not formally calculated, we have done comparisons with other leading analytics vendors, and there is no competition - Tableau Server is clearly the value leader.
  • The major contributor to our positive ROI has primarily been the time to deployment and the time to adoption for critical visualizations and dashboards.
