Likelihood to Recommend

Amazon Chime

Amazon Chime is a superior alternative to other free video conference/conference call programs. The call and video quality are great, and you can have multiple participants on both video and call. It's well suited for an organization that wants an affordable option for video and conference calls, but may not be appropriate for organizations with limited budgets or those who do very little conferencing.

Quip

I've found Quip to be extremely useful as a collaborative document sharing platform, moreso even than the Google suite, because the user interface is pleasing and intuitive, and it's much easier to organize and find files. If you prefer the File System Hierarchy style organization of Google Docs, Quip might not be for you - but if you're looking for a new take on organization with a more graphic feel to it, I would recommend giving Quip a try.I would say Quip is best suited for documents you're sharing or working on with an internal team, especially something that's for reference or a rough draft, since it's not big on formatting. This definitely isn't a platform for making a polished document to show off to customers, etc.

Pros

  • Great call quality! The conference line is crystal clear.
  • Strong video quality. We've never had problems with the video conference feed cutting out.
  • The app is pretty user friendly and easy to use.
  • Easy to send invites and to give teammates the ability to schedule calls/video conferences on behalf of another account.

  • Quip puts a lot of chatting capabilities into everything - likes, tags, favorites, callouts, emojis, Giphy, attachments. So communication is rich and creative. And they link chatting communication into everything.
  • Quip allows for collaboration on all documents. Highlights on document or lines or parts of documents are allowed. So collaboration can be very specific within the document. There are date time tags so it is easy to trace historically. Quip also notes when someone sees something which is handy for possible follow-ups instead of waiting for a reply of some kind.
  • Quip has done a fantastic job of expanding Quip capabilities. When we first started, only basic office documents were allowed. Now they have many other apps for project tracking, calendar, working with Salesforce records, and integration with JIRA. These are all very simple to use. It is easy to start using with no training.

Cons

  • More simplified dial-in numbers. The PIN for our conference line is long and easy to mistype.
  • You do not have to download the Chime app in order to join a conference, but if you want to do anything beyond join (schedule a conference, participate in a group chat, control participants), you have to have the app downloaded and installed. The app that you have to download in order to launch a conference is a memory hog, and slows down a computer's boot up time.
  • The add-in for Microsoft Outlook is particularly clunky. It helps you add scheduled conference calls/video conferences to your Outlook calendar, but it can cause Outlook to crash, and creates a really slow open time for Outlook. If you can avoid downloading the Outlook Add-In, I would.
  • No built-in screen sharing capabilities.

  • It would be good to have the option of making the chat a little bigger when needed.
  • Sometimes documents can become too long, it would be good to add tabs for the same campaign.
  • Close down the white-space on the sides of the Quip document so more content can be seen at glance.

Alternatives Considered

Amazon Chime is great for call and video quality. It's pretty comparable to Zoom both in cost and capabilities. It's definitely superior to UberConference and Join.me, both of which are not particularly reliable. I have had call quality and the screen shares freeze up. Also, neither UberConference or Join.me have a video conferencing ability.

Quip is primarily for document creation and organization -- in this capacity it far outperforms Google Drive with it's user-friendly interface and rich built-in features like Kanban boards, tables, and checklists. However, it is not designed to be a fully customizable database like Airtable or a high powered task management system like Todoist.

Return on Investment

  • Amazon Chime has been an incredibly cost effective way to add video and conference line services (with screen sharing) to our day to day operations because we have an account for free for being Vonage customers.
  • A pro account only costs $15 a month, and you only need one pro account for a small office. If others in your organization need to join, all you need is a basic account to join. You need a pro account in order to launch and administer meetings.
