Yieldex is well suited when you want to analyze yield. Gone are the days when people asked me for new reports and I turned them away. I can always create a new report quickly. However, it does not generate nice looking charts for you. You still need to download the report and create charts yourself.

Great if your audience is on Facebook and you are trying to sell B2C. I'm not sure how that works on B2B.I also think it's a great channel for more visual products and experiences, but you need to know that it not only needs an analyst for managing, you also need a designer and creative person for making all the ads. The fact that ads fatigue over time makes management more expensive than other channels (AdWords) but it has great potential for scalability.Nevertheless, I think almost everyone can benefit from using it. You just need to know that it takes some time to master the learning phase (what segments, what types of ads, what messages, pictures, etc. work best).

Pros

  • User friendly -- setting up campaigns in AppNexus is straight forward, and done linearly so it makes sense.
  • Shows a good snapshot of each campaign from a high level -- it is easy to see which bidding and targeting models are used within the lines of the campaign without digging in too deeply.
  • Easy to stay organized -- AppNexus allows users to stay organized by offering things like folders that can keep multiple flights for the same advertiser organized.
  • Access to a lot of inventory -- AppNexus gives users access to a lot of inventory and underdelivery is rarely an issue.

  • Frankly, Facebook for Business brings us leads. They are not always the best and most qualified leads, but we are able to get them inexpensively.
  • Facebook for Business provides information on our audiences.
  • We are able to create lookalike audiences from our customer lists to help us find like candidates.
  • We are also able to create lookalike audiences from our website traffic, to further allow us to connect to similar candidates.
  • We are able to connect to an API and download results information for analysis.

Cons

  • Reporting -- reporting is slow, and requires pulling a separate report for each topic.
  • Creative auditing -- creative auditing is inconsistent. Sometimes an ad that failed audit can be pushed through audit again and pass without any changes being made.
  • Searching for campaigns -- searching for campaigns is cumbersome and oftentimes needs to be done manually at the advertiser level (rather than using the search box that appears at all times)

  • Trying to keep up with all the algorithm changes can be exhausting. It's almost a full-time job trying to "crack" the code.
  • Engagement has been on a downward trend for the last couple of years. It's getting harder to get customers to react to sponsored ads.
  • Scams are huge right now and if your name is not well-known people can be wary of trusting the source, even if it was found on Facebook.
  • It's getting increasingly more expensive to reach the same audience.

AppNexus keeps most of our historical data, and learns based on previous campaigns, so future campaigns for the same advertiser are likely to do better based on the AppNexus algorithms

We have to continue using this tool in order to be effective on this marketing platform. Though there are several changes I wish we could see, the fact is that we will still need to use this product to provide customers with the information they need.

Because I think the interface is kind of confusing at the beginning and it confuses you a lot.

I find it very cumbersome to use. It is a clunky system and often times very buggy. The customer support, though helpful, is very slow to resolve issues.

Because the support team does give you support, they take 24hrs to get back to you but once they open a ticket they focus on resolving the issue for you. My only problem is that you don't have a specific account representative assigned to you.

I've had good experiences once I actually connect with a representative, but the initial ticketing process is very slow. I don't have status updates on where my support requests are in the queue, either.

Take all of the training offered through Facebook first before attempting to create a page on the platform. Learn all of the capabilities available to you. Learn about the different types of audiences who might be interested in seeing your page. Create short video clips as though they are viewed at a much higher rate than anything else. Offer free giveaways or raffles to further build to your list of prospects and drive traffic to your website

Alternatives Considered

Before using AppNexus we have used Ad Juggler and compared to Ad Juggler, AppNexus is sophisticated ad server and the UI is awesome.

We use a variety of touch points and Facebook for Business is one of them. You can't be everywhere, but you do have to spread your resources so you are overlapping and reaching your target markets on various outlets. This is one of the places we feel like our money makes an impact on our conversion rates.

Return on Investment

  • the more product offerings AppNexus develops, the more we can use it and streamline our process (creates better efficiency by keeping us in one platform, rather than needing to switch back and forth between several)
  • quick snapshot reporting (imps, clicks, conversions) saves us time and makes information more readily available for ad-hoc advertiser inquiries
  • the transparency of AppNexus allows us to be able to provide more honest information about where the ads ran, how much they cost, etc.

  • Significant lift in reach for our content.
  • We've grown an email list from 1,000 to 15,000, primarily through our activity on Facebook's platform.
  • Increase in donors for our non-profit.
