Cisco Webex Room Series

Obviously, Cisco Webex Room Series devices are optimized for a Webex Meetings environment. webex devices combined with Webex Meetings are by far the best video conferencing solution on the market. They also work well for Teams meetings (with CVI or simply in Web RTC). On the other hand, in a Zoom environment, the situation becomes more complicated. You must absolutely have the Zoom Connector.

Polycom RealPresence Group Series

If you're always working in the Polycom ecosystem then the Group Series codecs are reliable and the quality of the camera and microphones are extremely good. However, the system relies heavily on either having onsite server technology and/or cloud based bridging capability. In addition, the peripherals like cameras and microphones are quite expensive. Maintenance and support costs also make the ongoing investment a costly one

Pros

Cisco Webex Room Series

  • The Cisco Spark Room series has many new technologies that make this unit well worth the purchase. The auto room framing feature makes manual zoom and focus a thing of the past. The unit will auto zoom and pan to frame the screen around a single person in a conference room or zoom out and capture the whole room if there are multiple people in the conference. The Cisco Spark Room series also has an active speaker tracking system that will track users in the room and pan and zoom when that person is speaking.
  • The Cisco Spark Room series units can be cloud or on-premise registered taking advantage of whichever platform best suits your needs and current investments.
  • When the Cisco Spark Room series units are attached to 4K TVs or monitors you get the best possible resolution for video viewing with crystal clear presentations.

Polycom RealPresence Group Series

  • The audio and video quality can not be matched.
  • For the most part, they are rather simplistic in their use and just work. People don't usually have a hard time operating them
  • They are rather versatile in that we have been able to integrate them with other applications

Cons

Cisco Webex Room Series

  • Need native USB mode support across the portfolio urgently - we need to stop selling devices that require extra USB capture integrations to make "interoperable". Please refresh with a G2 of devices supporting USB mode natively on every endpoint type.
  • Ability to use the Room Navigator as a whiteboard surface, to enable whiteboarding on non-board devices, would be very powerful.

Polycom RealPresence Group Series

  • The only issue that we have experienced with Polycom RealPresence Group Series is the speed dial functionality. When attempting to use the speed dial buttons, the system occasionally sends a call through the computer system, not the phone. While the computer call option is valuable, not everyone can answer calls that way and we have had to do a manual lookup of an extension and call back when that happens.

We like our Cisco endpoints a lot. However, the technology is getting better in the Zoom room market and we are interested in exploring those options. I'd really like to see some new improvements in the room kit series such as wireless controllers and the ability to mount the room kits in multiple configurations. I would also like to see the Room Kit and Room Kit Plus series standardize their audio line inputs to accommodate 3rd party microphone and DSP solutions.

Touch controls make using it easier. It offers more customization for better accessibility. The UI is very intuitive and quite optimized for better overall user experience. I haven't found any difficulty navigating or using it so far. However touch controls can be laggy sometimes, which can be frustrating at times but a simple restart would fix it.

Polycom RealPresence group series is most ideal for corporate sectors for larger meeting rooms where the virtual interaction happens on a frequent basis. It supports most of the global meeting platforms via IP-based or SIP-based dial-in and simultaneously it's secure too. While designing meeting rooms with automation it works perfectly with third-party programmed interfaces

Cisco support team is very responsive and well-versed. They reply to our query very quickly. Available at any time of the day to pick up calls. I had a very pleasant conversation with their support executive where he walked me through some features and tips to make the best use of the device. Very helpful.

The support and maintenance is only as good as your own helpdesk. First line is your own IT department and they need to be fully versed in using the systems and configuring them. Beyond this, Polycom's 2nd/3rd line support is good but by that time you will have wasted a long time insofar as your system will be down. The RMA process is good for maintenance support codecs but again, you're paying for this on an annual basis

Alternatives Considered

Cisco Webex Room Series

Actually, we have other room systems and desk products as well. Deskpro, dx80, Room Kit Mini, and room USB. We, as an IT integrator, installed almost every type of Cisco collaboration device. I think the Webex Room Series portfolio is absolutely good for any kind of conference room or meeting room. Room Kit Mini, plus or pro are easily combined with screens, and this is very important for customers.

Polycom RealPresence Group Series

Polycom RealPresence Group Series stands head and shoulders above Microsoft Teams and Cisco Webex Meetings both for dependability and robust delivery of function. One established the meetings were very hard to break apart but easy to end when so desired. The installation of the devices, the training of technicians, and end-users were both intuitive and easy to manage, where the same interactions with Microsoft Teams and Cisco Webex In my opinion, and experience, were challenging to work through.

Return on Investment

Cisco Webex Room Series

  • We had to look at the soft costs. But we were spending 5-15 minutes getting each meeting running with an average of 4-6 people per meeting, that money was adding up. Now we have meetings starting in under a minute so we are saving that money times about 2500 meetings per day. So this was a huge const savings that far outweighed what we payed for the hardware.

  • Once pexip integrates Polycom/skype this will be a big win for us due to the RPTouch integrating the "one - touch join". This will increase adoption of video greatly.
  • Before the Group series with peripherals was implemented the cost of a video room was twice what it is today. Massive win.
  • Due to provisioning and automated firmware the IT involvement has been greatly reduced. No longer is there a need for manual changes to individual endpoints.
