LogicMonitor

Hands down the best tool I've used for monitoring server bare metal, switches, firewalls, access points, power equipment, and anything else you might hit with SNMP that's not an operating system. Getting at the data below the operating system and easily reporting/dash-boarding it is key. Giving client access to see the data is easy. The alert tuning is fairly easy and straight forward which lets you get to the data you really want relatively quickly.

Micro Focus SiteScope

SiteScope is definitely well suited in an HP server environment. It is also well suited for virtual server environments. It is also well suited for those who are happy with email and text based message alerting. It may not be appropriate in other environments where monitoring physical components is critical. Because HP SiteScope does not monitor certain physical components, it does fall short of being able to be a "one stop shop solution" in regard to monitoring. It is not well suited for those looking for logic in how alerts are sent and cascade to other people or groups.

Pros

LogicMonitor

  • LogicMonitor does a great job of finding and configuring dynamic or virtual "things" - load balancer VIP's, hypervisor VM's etc... No more fuddling through MIBs to find OID's and make manual configuration updates to the monitoring solution.
  • The dashboards are extremely flexible and useful to create top level views to track utilization and performance.
  • Other monitoring is also extremely flexible and useful - for example we had a service that only exposed hundreds of stats through a web status page. LM helped us parse this data and display and track it over time.

Micro Focus SiteScope

  • All the infrastructure monitoring things are preexisting and we don't need to set up anything additional when using HP Sitescope. We have monitors for ps, CPU, etc., for our application.
  • HP Sitescope can also run the custom scripts in our servers and send an alert based on the output. For example, we are running one custom script with HP sitescope to monitor large size files and send an alert if they exceed the threshold.
  • Sitescope will have logs as well which can then be forwarded to splunk to draw graphs in splunk for the dashboard. For example, ps is very expensive in splunk and it was disabled. So we are sending that stat from HP sitescope and have a splunk dashboard to show the memory of that process over time.

Cons

LogicMonitor

  • Missing robust support for some fundamental things like SNMP traps.
  • Support team is going through some growing pains. The people and coverage is growing but product expertise and customer experience is degrading. I am sure they will fix this though.
  • They are in the middle of transitioning to a new UI. It looks better but is a lot harder to use for people that have been on the old UI for a long time. Probably just an issue with legacy customers.

Micro Focus SiteScope

  • The tool doesn't have much visibility for JavaScript heavy web pages for URL monitors.
  • The Java version to run the tool has issues sometimes with running the application.
  • The reporting function needs some improvement.

The only reason we would leave logicmonitor would be price. Everything else has been really really good

It's very good. One area for improvement is the ability to group large quantities of objects together more quickly or disable alerts for specific instances completely very quickly.Alert Tuning is one of the more complex, but entirely necessary parts of the product to use keeping me from rating usability a 10.

Sometimes I think I know more about the product than the newer guys do. Therefore it has to be escalated and you have to wait.

Pretty straight forward. Not much to say except to speak to Logicmonitor about planning your collector sizes to begin with.

Alternatives Considered

LogicMonitor

We used to use OpManager but moved to LogicMonitor, while more expensive LogicMonitor was easy to set up, and allowed us easy visibility on the status of our network via the easy to configure and set up dashboards. LogicMonitor also includes the ability to send SMSs based on alerts, which is very helpful if the problem is with an email server etc.

As far as the interface goes Solarwinds is much prettier and intuitive but it is also a very busy interface which makes navigation difficult at times. Also setting up alerting under Solarwinds requires you access the desktop of the machine running the application whereas SiteScope does not. The Alerting is also much more difficult to setup correctly on SolarWInds where SiteScope is a breeze.

Return on Investment

LogicMonitor

  • Compared to the product we used to use for monitoring, LogicMonitor alerts us of issues a lot faster. This allows us to jump on task before tickets start to come in.
  • LogicMonitor is not the cheapest out there, but we feel with what they offer and how good their support is to work with, it is worth the money spent.

Micro Focus SiteScope

  • Checking processes using a ps command and other indexing steps is very expensive in splunk.
  • Infrastructure monitoring is no more an issue for our company after getting HP sitescope.
