SAS Business Intelligence

SAS BI is a great BI tool as it incorporates the advantage of SAS which is proven to be robust over the years. SAS BI is more suitable for a relatively larger organization which is looking for self-service BI tools where most of the users are not technically proficient. Also, since license fee is an on a higher end, smaller organizations will find it hard to afford SAS.

Pros

  • Collect and combine data from multiple sources. For example, data from the college database, the National Student Clearinghouse and our student services tracking software can combine to feed one report.
  • Condense millions of rows of data into a single, easy to use report. For example, we can produce a cube that is collapsed at a high level, and users can drill down to their area of interest in seconds.
  • Create interactive reports. It was important that our reports contained the ability for users to play with the data. They had to be able to filter large datasets, drag and drop comparison groups into graphs, and drill down to student-level data. SAS BI provided all of this and more.

Cons

  • The cost for SAS Business Intelligence con prove to be a little bit prohibitive.
  • The training for SAS Business Intelligence is often difficult to arrange and has often been canceled due to not enough people enrolled.
  • Support at Universities used to be limited but I hear that this is changing.

  • Sampled data
  • Copying goals to different profiles is to this day an arduous process
  • Lack of an iOS app for Analytics.

There is no other product that can match SAS. There are some products that can compare to ETL but lack the analytics that SAS has. Others can perform a limited set of analytical procedures but lack the data processing that comes with SAS. Using thin client allows users to access data whenever they have an internet connection.

Google is always innovating and it's nice to be part of that innovation. With new acquisitions happening around the platform around multi-channel attribution, it's an exciting time to be a Google Analytics Premium subscriber. While the sampling is a downside, the fact that the product is so incredibly intuitive makes most analysts hopefully that they will continue to improve in these areas and make it a true Fortune 500 competitor to Adobe Analytics.

Google has a great strategy in that it gets people to adopt its products at a mass scale. It gets people in by giving them the product for free. It keeps them around by having a solid product that is easy to use. This applies to Google Analytics Premium, which takes advantage of the developments of the free version. In fact, sometimes the simplicity of its usability is held against GA, in that the advanced power users want to avoid interfaces and wizards and just get right to raw querying and modeling of data themselves. But overall, I believe that the usability of this product will be what helps GA Premium take the throne in terms of enterprise analytics solutions - it will be most likely to be adopted by the full enterprise.

When you call tech support, you are immediately routed to a person who can answer your question. Often they can answer on the spot. However, if they cannot, you are given a track number and then followed up with. There have been times when I have had multiple track numbers open and they will actually TRACK YOU DOWN to ensure that your problem has been resolved. Issues do not fall into black holes with SAS. They are also willing to do a WebEx with you to diagnose the problem by seeing your environment, which is always helpful.

If you already have the basic version of GA installed, "getting" GA Premium happens immediately through a virtual flipping of the switch - no need to re-implement. You'll want to expand your use of custom dimensions and metrics (you get 10x the amount with Premium). Ideally, you'll be using a tag management solution to talk with GA Premium, in concert with implementing a dataLayer (to note, Google's Tag Manager platform is covered under the same GA Premium SLA, and it's free). There are some welcomed "configurations" with GA Premium, such as integrating with DoubleClick products, activating data driven attribution models, and building roll-up executive reports - but all of these are easy point and click solutions. In comparison with any other enterprise analytics solution, implementing GA and GA Premium is traditionally easier and more flexible. And if you have any trouble or need an extra set of hands for implementation, GA Certified Partners like LunaMetrics can help

Alternatives Considered

I have used Crystal Reports, Jaspersoft and SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS). I would recommended Business Intelligence over SSRS and Crystal Reports. SSRS is very SQL-centric and Crystal Reports is more of an end-user tool. I would recommend Jaspersoft over Business Intelligence for developing a seamless web-based reporting interface but I highly recommend Business Intelligence for end-user ad-hoc reporting.

Google Analytics Premium is the more user friendly experience of the two. If you want people in your organization, outside of your analytics/web department to look at and occasionally use the tool, then this would be the ideal choice. However, the amount of times you are going to have to run unsampled reports (and having to explain what that is/what that means) makes it a frustrating ordeal. Again, if your company falls within the sample size parameters, it makes sense to get GA over Adobe Analytics, but strongly consider Adobe Analytics if you fall outside the sample size.

SAS Business Intelligence is third party software and therefore absolutely has to "play nice" with other software platforms. It is able to connect to all major platforms and all smaller platforms that I have come across. It has also been around for an extremely long time and has a strong history and good market penetration.

Return on Investment

  • Positive Impact: better customer service. We have been able to deliver reports that will help multiple employees and implement any feedback they have on those reports quickly.
  • Positive Impact: increased inter-departmental discussions. We have long had a problem working in silos. Now we are pulling data from multiple departments into one report, and it becomes easy to see how what one department is doing in affecting another. We had a meeting to discuss a preliminary report on course scheduling efficiency. It included data from our Facilities folks and our academic Deans. Once we put the numbers up on the screen, there spawned a helpful discussion about how what one department can do to help another.
  • Positive Impact: organizational transparency. For the first time, our users are exposed to a wealth of data about themselves and other areas of the college. It is starting to make some question the way we do business, and if there is a better way.

  • Our Premium clients use GA to allocate marketing budgets, improve visitor flows and site conversion rates and better understand custom behavior. All of these activities have quantifiable benefits.
