Overall Satisfaction with Mailchimp
Mailchimp is being used by a large number of our independent departments across campus. From Advancement to Admissions, there are various groups that all use Mailchimp for various lists that they send campaigns and one off messages to. It has been well used to help groups that otherwise wouldn't have the ability to easily send mass email to those that they are trying to more effectively target.
Pros
- Easily create email newsletters with no coding
- Customize the email lists to cater to a more specific email message
Cons
- When bringing in your own HTML it can get somewhat confusing for those not as familiar with coding.
- Some of the reporting could be better
- Allowed us to send a large volume of mail at a very reasonable price
- No contracts to worry about with at least our legacy packages.
Mailchimp is cheaper than a lot of its competition. This makes it a very good contender for most people. One issue where it does not work as well is in higher education admissions and recruiting. A lot of our lists come from name buys which are prohibited by MailChimp even though this is a standard practice in the higher ed realm. The other competitors do not have as restrictive of rules on this.
We've not integrated as many of the online marketing functions specifically in Mailchimp but it has been a good step in that direction for a number of people and departments on our campus. The benefits we foresee in this realm make it still a very good player going forward. They seem to be adding to these offerings on a regular basis and we look forward to utilizing them.
Successes have mostly be in the ability to reach populations where a staff member knows the content and questions that their audience has but the staff member doesn't have the technical skills to send messages. With Mailchimp we can set those people up with an account and they can easily get to work sending to these populations to engage with them. The only real lesson we learned was in regards to not being able to send to a list that we've bought.
