If you do not have a large budget and are a large organization, I would steer clear of Actuate. If you are looking to do very complex washboarding, I would not use them. Your developers have to be very skilled to work with this. Plan to bring in consultants if necessary to help your process. Adhoc reporting is weak. If your pricing is user based and you expand, this could be very expensive.

Qlik Sense

If you have the technical know-how to build out Qlik Sense apps in house or budget allows for consulting help, this is a great tool. There really isn't a BI tool on the market where some programming knowledge isn't needed for setup and maintenance and I feel this is one of the easiest ones out there to get set up, running, and providing you with great data storytelling.

Pros

  • End user ability to customize Business Intelligence Reporting Tools (BIRT)
  • Actuate Support is usually prompt and helpful.
  • Ability to embed in other applications, has extendable code for authenticating/authorizing users.

  • The desktop version is FREE
  • Very easy to configure detailed visualizations, lots of drag and drop functionality
  • Once apps are developed (apps are what QlikSense calls its reports) just about anyone can filter and run them.
  • Great for storytelling with data

Cons

  • Report rendering can take a long time for large reports (250,000+ pages) - we run these in batch over night
  • The deployment of production code from development to test to production enviroments can be complex due to the number of components that must compile

  • Only promote features such as multi-cloud deployments when they are available for all customers to use.

Not only can you ask the support team for help, but you can also ask the community. Also with the community there is a vast amount of problems that have already been solved. The problem you are encountering has a likely chance of already being discussed and even solved in the community section saving you time from reaching out.

Breadth of Deployment

Actuate is used extensively as a developemnt tool and by 10s of thousands of end users. Virtually every line of business in our large financial institution uses Actuate - many who are unaware because the components are built into our home grown applications.

Alternatives Considered

I've used JReports and Actuate is very similar but seems to have a lot more customization features for the end user of BIRT reports.
Amy Broome profile photo
Qlik Sense is an attempt to provide a more user friendly self-service experience and it does well in this and essentially extends the Qlik View experience. Our experience has been positive and would consider Qlik Sense enterprise to formalize our proactive self-service offering for business analytics. It would be interesting to see if natural language analytics will be the next step.

Collaboration and Sharing

OpenText Analytics6.1
Based on 7 answers
Engineers can share and collaborate building tasks - e.g. One develope builds the report design while another builds the query. But I can't pass in a requirements template from a spreadsheet to construct the report. Collaboration is still strongly based on comminication between stakeholders and engineers rather than through automation

Qlik Sense7.4
Based on 33 answers
Qlik Sense seems to have been built with collaboration in mind, in that it allows for annotations and customisation. It has an advanced security mechanism/settings providing granular authorisation to underlying data which is of immense use to financial industry (especially when a Chinese Great Wall kind of separation is needed in investment banks). Providing access to external parties (users outside of your organisation) is an easy call on Qlik Sense, though it asks for additional licensing.

This seems to be able to connect with ease to most database types. How Qlik Sense handles data from the various sources with comparative ease. Merging the data from different sources is simple and easy as well as the ability to tidy up formatting issues within the data

Return on Investment

  • Actuate can handle 50 to 60 sub reports inside a report very well.
  • Dynamically creating the datasource, chart, graph, reports are the main advantages. We can do any level of drilling, and can create a performance matrix dashboard efficiently.
No photo available
  • Qlik Sense fills the gap between Excel's ad-hoc reporting and the traditional Qlik View scheduled type reporting. We have considered Qlik Sense Enterprise but feel that the desktop edition is good enough for our needs.
