Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (formerly XenDesktop)

Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops are well suited for remote access when paired with Citrix ADC as the gateway. It is great for when there are limited resources and applications and desktops need to be shared with many users. It is a very good VDI environment and works with VMware vCenter and ESXi very well. Without Citrix ADC it is very difficult to set up an ICA proxy for remote sessions. If you are planning on using Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops for remote access you either need Citrix ADC or VPN to keep it secure.

TeamViewer

TeamViewer excels as a remote support software, and provides some really nice device management and monitoring capabilities to boot. It handles weak rural internet about as well as anything else I've seen.About the only instance I can think where TeamViewer is not appropriate is when needing to deploy/manage devices with Windows 10 in S Mode, or other client operating systems that are not supported.

Pros

Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (formerly XenDesktop)

  • All Management resources can now be installed on a single server. Reducing the overhead required to maintain a citrix environment.
  • Granularity of the Delivery groups allow you to define allowing a remote user to connect to a random XenDesktop VM or individually assigning VMs to users.
  • HDX RealTime Optimization Pack has stabilized some of the issues of utilizing all of the features of Skype for Business in a ZenDesktop VM.

TeamViewer

  • TeamViewer maintains a highly stable quality as far as video is concerned, as this is not lost even if the connection is poor, even if the image may freeze. This quality is generally in HD 4k depending on the platform's previous settings, or in any case, by default by the service.
  • TeamViewer organizes the maintenance sessions so well that it is not really necessary to separate them in order to work on any of them specifically. This is very useful if you need to quickly get the file within a single session and sessions of other categories are involved.
  • TeamViewer maintains a good catalog of templates for maintenance sessions, which would be useful in case you do not have enough knowledge in running the service, as these templates, despite being relatively limiting simple, meet the necessary features to cover a stable maintenance.
  • Teamviewer provides a unique customer service among remote maintenance service development companies, with quick solutions that make our maintenance work not only as optimized as possible, but also as technically interesting as possible, presenting us with new ways of working within the platform that we were not previously familiar with.
  • Using teamviewer's configuration options has been one of the most comfortable activities of our entire work management, because with the entire structure that keeps the software running, we can easily compensate for all incidents that occur during maintenance sessions and make sure that they do not happen again in the future.

Cons

Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (formerly XenDesktop)

  • Monitoring and troubleshooting tools are lacking. Unless you can afford the costly step up to Platinum licensing, there is little native visibility into the Inner workings of the system, or into the ICA tunnel protocols. there are third party tools available, but because ICA is licensed by Citrix, there are only a few vendors who have the ability to really see what is occurring under the covers.
  • Profile management is very sloppy. Once again, a third party tool is required to effectively manage roaming profiles and keep login times down to a manageable level. UPM allows profiles to grow dramatically and requires careful monitoring and frequent intervention.
  • The Citrix Receiver client (Windows) is quirky and often causes end user performance and UX issues. Installing and upgrading the client is not straightforward or easy, although Citrix has been improving this weakness in recent releases.

TeamViewer

  • TeamViewer chats cannot be scheduled as a group.
  • No remote configuration methods for cell phones are available
  • Lacks many collaboration oriented tools, such as a brainstorming collection system -No scheduling of any kind for group chats.
  • Cannot schedule any kind of activities once the sessions are over.

As long as I continue to provide remote support for my clients, it's a no brainier. For what I pay out, I probably make it back tenfold in the ability to provide remote support from wherever and whenever. Not to mention the saved gas money for a fix that only takes 5 minutes but it takes you 20 minutes to get there. As my business continues to grow, and I support more and more clients, my need for TeamViewer will only grow.

Getting the environment setup took me three months of off and on work, with 3 complete rebuilds of the environment. Utilizing the WebUI to access the environment had presented so many random issues that we had to require end users to use the Citrix Reciever App. As it was the only stable solution.Aside from that, it hasn't required much admin intervention since the stand-up was completed.

I do not have complaints with the product. In fact, TeamViewer is used by some of our support companies (tech support, accounting, software, etc.), and it performs well. It is simply more product than we needed in our application, and more money than we can justify budgeting.

The performance of XenDesktop is the best in the industry because of the fine-tuned protocol and years of updating. Overall, I don't think there is a better performer on the market. The question is if the added complexity of running XenDesktop is really worth the performance gain. While the latest version of XenDesktop is the easiest to deploy so far, it is still more challenging than the competitors.

When you finally get to support, it is usually fairly good and consistent, but Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (formerly XenDesktop) does make it hard and time-intensive to get to someone who can help. With that said their only KB's are quite good and many times you can solve issues by looking stuff up yourself vs. fighting to get a competent support rep on the phone,

I have not needed to contact TeamViewer support much in regards to the software not performing like it is supposed to. The only reason that we contact support is to get the license keys for our updated software. We always get a response in a very reasonable amount of time with the new license keys included.

I have never used the online training either. I have watched a few informational videos that were helpful when learning how to do a specific procedure within TeamViewer and get the most out of the software by utilizing one of the many features that are available with the software. Again, 5 if for neutral.

VMWare View is more complicated to implement and uses linked clones. I haven't used VMWare View in awhile though and this may have changed. At the time I tested it, the performance was consistently better (especially when remote) with XenDesktop. Additionally, XenDesktop had features like personal vDisk that gave it an advantage from a user standpoint. If you have applications that require GPU acceleration, Citrix's offering is more mature in this area than VMWare View as well.

Many times while using ConnectWise Control I can't find users laptops, the user has to reboot a few times or restart services which can be a tough task if the user is not very tech savy. TeamViewer's connection using ID and password makes it easy and comfortable to the user to establish a session and have us help them.

Return on Investment

Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops (formerly XenDesktop)

  • Increased productivity of nursing of ER and inpatient staff, leading to faster and more accurate patient care.
  • Very positive feedback from VDI users who could not imagine having to go back to the "old way".
  • Thin-clients and 0-clients should double the workstation life cycle versus traditional workstations.
  • Large initial investment for server and storage infrastructure, Microsoft and Citrix licensing, and configuration of the virtual platform, XenDesktop, and other product integrations (single sign-on, provisioning services, third-party personalization and management apps, etc.)
  • Integration of all components that compliment and support XenDesktop create a complex environment that increases quality and quantity of supporting staff.

  • Given that I use TeamViewer all day, every day, the ROI is hard to calculate--but the price is incredibly reasonable for what it does. In my opinion, it paid for itself in a week.
  • The business objective behind my use of TeamViewer is simple: the ability to handle all of my day-to-day tasks as if I were sitting at my desk when I am not.
