LogicMonitor

If you're looking for a complete monitoring/reporting solution that's competitive in terms of pricing and capability, then LogicMonitor really does tick many boxes here. We've not got to test many specific areas (i.e. Linux host/web server monitoring/SQL Server monitoring) in real depth as our trail focus was on network monitoring, but that said we did get to see that this tool really does have a solid and well-deserved place in the infrastructure monitoring marketplace. If you're after a tool that really does offer across the board monitoring with a strong support base and a competitive pricing model, then you would be well served to give LogicMonitor a trail. We trailed the complete product from Computer Associates which is one of the few in the marketplace that I can liken to LogicMonitor (apart from maybe SolarWinds in terms of infra coverage) and their price was through the roof for us (despite being a university).

Pros

CoScale

  • Visualizes Kubernetes web performance in context.
  • Automatically creates a number of default, but very informative dashboards.
Anonymous | TrustRadius Reviewer

LogicMonitor

  • Flexibility with datasources - if one does not exist for a specific technology you can create it yourself
  • API - really flexible and easy to work with API to make tasks automated
  • Dashboarding - Simple and easy to use while also being effective

Cons

CoScale

  • It is missing a summary view of resource consumption by all instances of a given service.
  • Takes an old school approach to save dashboard changes with a button.

LogicMonitor

  • When thinking about monitoring we have two major pieces. Performance metrics and logging. LogicMonitor covers the first very well but currently, it was not in the log monitoring sector. They are currently working on making up ground in that area but have a lot of work to do to get to the level of ELK or Splunk.
  • Intelligent alerting is still a bit young. Knowing how devices are connected to what and alerting only on the device that's having issues is in its infancy. There are ways to configure this but it takes a lot of manual configuration to get it where you want it and needs to be maintained with any changes. We don't normally have a cascade of alerts due to devices failing but in certain environments, it has happened.

The only reason we would leave logicmonitor would be price. Everything else has been really really good

It's very good. One area for improvement is the ability to group large quantities of objects together more quickly or disable alerts for specific instances completely very quickly.Alert Tuning is one of the more complex, but entirely necessary parts of the product to use keeping me from rating usability a 10.

We have been working with CoScale for quite some time now, and we have not encountered too many problems really. The majority of minor issues we ran into were quickly solved by reaching out to technical community forums. When it comes to the remaining ones, we were able to solve those efficiently with assistance from the supporting team of technical experts.

I have only had to reach out to them a few times, but it has been a great experience every time. They do not have access into your environment until you enable support access, which is for a set amount of time. This is great because I know that my customers have data privacy unless there is a problem that needs to be addressed. When I am working on developing a new datasource they provide a sandbox account that I am able to do my work in. This allows support as needed in the sandbox environment so I do not need to allow access to production data for that process.

Pretty straight forward. Not much to say except to speak to Logicmonitor about planning your collector sizes to begin with.

Alternatives Considered

CoScale

CoScale was developed as a next-generation monitoring and alerting system for Kubernetes container orchestration engine, and it largely delivers what was promised by leveraging direct integration into the orchestration engine itself. Compared to other vendors, CoScale's in-container monitoring allows even to monitor the services running within the containers, which makes a huge difference for us.

LogicMonitor

LogicMonitor is head and shoulders above anything we have used before. Traverse was the most feature-rich, but the back-end was cumbersome and problem-prone. But it was not extensible, support was lacking, and product updates were inconsistent.

Return on Investment

CoScale

  • Information provided by CoScale accelerates problem solving for us.
  • Significantly lowers the time to identify any issues with our container environment.

LogicMonitor

  • It is great the pricing model is very flexible so it is easy to scale up and down as requirements change and fluxuate. It is also simple (less than it used to be) so fairly easy to calculate costs - no complexity around interface counts or whatnot - just number of monitored hosts.
  • Very fast to deploy so it is easy to go from a problem one day to a solution the next day - proactively identifying issues instead of responding to end user complaints.
  • LogicMonitor added a killer feature (possibly to compete with Auvik) of configuration management. However it costs a fairly substantial amount just to turn it on whether you have one device or 100. I don't get it - I think a nominal fee per device would align better with the service and customer expectations of the product.
