For sites with backend languages (i.e. PHP) it is simple to do A/B and split testing as we can rely on parameters set, which can be analyzed by PHP before page loads.For sites like Shopify that don't truly have a server side language, we have to rely on split testing with different URL or by using Javascript to analyze parameters and change content after.

For what you pay ($29 in our case) this is an amazing tool and I've seen huge and very small companies use it, so seems like scalability is not an issue at all. If you want to learn more about usability or intent from your customers, this is for you. If you think this will give you all the answers you need.... forget it. This is quantitative research but needs to be heavily paired with qualitative research if you want to understand where the main issues arise. This can get you to understand the easy first 70% of the problem (which is a lot.) The other 30% requires the same effort but more specific tools and more qualitative research.

Pros

  • The dashboard and ease of setting up tests with VWO is particularly easy and intuitive.
  • VWO are constantly adding new features so we can analyse different parts of the customer journey and gain more insightful data on our customers.
  • The VWO conversion all-in-one platform is excellent for gathering insights on how customers use the website and backing up theories. It has helped us prioritise tests and identify issues we hadn't thought of.

  • The ease of use, heatmaps and recordings can be set up in seconds, and then shared with the team using a link
  • The feedback and data gathered can provide great insights that help to optimize our website.
  • When running experiments with any A/B testing tool you only get quantitive data and there is very limited insight into how or why users engage with one variation over another. Hotjar gives a fuller picture of our customers and their motivations for engaging with our site.

Cons

  • I only use A/B testing because that's the only thing someone has taught me hands-on to do.
  • I know there is more functionality available but it is not clear when you're logged in which features require an upgrade vs. which ones you can access.
  • The Demo that was organised previously was not practical with poor connectivity and not tailored to the audience (ie. our CTO and Head of Customer support were attending but learned nothing useful other than the things I had already shared previously by going through the platform.)

  • There's no mention on their product roadmap to integrate with Adobe Analytics or Target. This could be an issue further down the line with customers that run big websites. Heatmaps, Net Promoter Scores and visitor recordings are all good scenarios when we'd want to compliment with our digital analytics data and reporting.
  • We had an issue with a few heatmaps when the page is using unique div ids, however we received feedback that this is on the roadmap to be fixed.
  • I'd like better security options, this isn't a complaint specifically towards Hotjar as most SaaS platforms don't offer much. At a minimum you should be able to restrict login access by IP address.

Visual Website Optimizer is a easy to use and powerful tool for testing web pages. We use it to test lead generation websites to increase the number of people that complete a form. Before we decided to go with Visual Website Optimizer we did research into other options and found Visual Website Optimizer to be one of the best.

For what it costs (at least as of now!) it's too good a bargain to pass up as long as you are dedicated to using Hotjar even infrequently for finding opportunities for improvement on your site.

I gave Visual Website Optimizer a rating of 8 because it is overall a great product to use. Setting up and keeping track of various tests is easy and straight forward. The only reason why this product is not rated higher is because the support documents online leave a lot of room for improvement.

It has never taken me more than a few seconds to figure out how to do what I want to do. I hope the Hotjar team remains committed to keeping the software intuitive to use as they continue to add more capabilities!

While their online document support is lacking a simple email to their support team will almost always get responded to the next day. It has however taken more than one email to explain the problem to the support team till they understood the problem. The solution I was given also only half fixed the problem the rest I figured out on my own.

Implementation

Overall, the implementation of VWO is straightforward. If you've got a straightforward way of deploying code to all of your test pages, either a good CMS or a TMS, then implementation should be a breeze. There is no tweaking to be done to the code itself, and once deployed it has the flexibility to cope with different VWO modules (tracking, conversion analysis, session analysis) without modification.
