Act-On

I think Act-On would work equally well for small to large companies. If you are less confident or experienced in automation and funneling, Act-On genuinely invests in the expertise to guide and support you so you can be continually learning and developing your skills and application for the platform. You never feel you are in the deep end

Seismic

Seismic is well suited for organizing large amounts of marketing materials and allowing for quick discovery, access, and customization of those materials. Seismic is less appropriate for use cases that are a little "outside the box". It handles what it was created to do very well. Where we have run into issues is when we are trying to do something that the Seismic platform was not really created to do.

  • Seismic allows for one location to store all relevant content so that associates are not having to spend as much time searching for what they need.
  • Seismic provides the ability to fully customize content such that one template can serve many needs with the simple ability to answer questions that drive the customization in the content. This customization can range from simple to quite complex depending on your level of expertise with the tool.
  • Seismic provides a lot of flexibility when it comes to organizing your content and how to make the experience of accessing that content unique to the needs of each user in the system.

Cons

  • The design capabilities for landing pages, forms and emails are lacking. It would be nice to have more creative options for those who aren't experienced with building visually appealing webpages and emails with code.
  • Generally, our integration with Microsoft Dynamics CRM is good, but occasionally the numbers don't match up between the two systems. I'm sure some of it is user error as new data is entered, but some of it isn't. And our marketing efforts are only as good as our data.
  • When mapping data fields in the process of importing an email list, it'd be helpful for the selection of Act-On data fields to be alphabetized. It would make the selection process much faster.

  • The front end and mobile app are very dynamic, however, the backend is in need of an update. They spent a lot of time making the front end work well in any browser and mobile, but the back end where the admins work leverages older technology. Better that they updated the front end for all the end users and they say they are in the process of updating it.
  • Flexibility on the landing pages - would be nice to have sub-landing pages. They support multiple profile pages (which is great - for different roles), but would be nice to have subpages support a tile layout like the homepage too.

These features are the right-size for us. Period. End. We could go cheap and go back to how we use to "market" but that wasn't engagement and we didn't know what our members were seeing and interested in. Through Act-On we have an affordable and easy platform that hits nearly every one of our needs.

Act-On had a lot of resources, and their staff was great at answering any questions I had to make sure we got started on the right foot. Looking back, I would have preferred some additional training sessions since we didn't have any previous experience with Marketing Automation and best practices.

I had a dedicated integration/setup person who was excellent. And they brought on specialized people as needed to help with certain things (DKIM setup, lead scoring setup, etc).

Alternatives Considered

The bottom line is that IMHO Act-On provides the best bang for the buck in the sector. There are other companies that might have prettier email templates, or fancier interfaces, but when push comes to shove Act-On meets the price-point vs. value issue very well. To get even remotely close the the feature set with another product you'd have to 2x the price.

Savo, Google Drive, Shared foldersSavo - was best in class a long time ago (and has since been bought by Seismic) - but required a lot of administrative work to setup and maintain. I had three people working on it full time to create pages and managing content. Shared folders and google drive are good to share content, but terrible at searching and tagging (not fully indexed and no tagging)

Return on Investment

  • Act-On is the only system I've used, other than my CRM. in fact, I have not used the CRM very much, since the Act-On data base is sufficient for my needs at this point, since I'm able to create contact segments easily.
  • Since I'd be comparing Act-On to nothing, there is no useful ROI data. I'm also the only employee, although I have contract people using different features of Act-On.
Charles Harte profile photo
  • Increased content usage - this is hard to quantify the improvement as we had no way to measure before, but the field is definitely finding and using content more. They also know when to use it.
  • No wasted time trying to find "the right version" in multiple places.
  • More as we continue the roll-out and usage, but in my past company were I implemented it, we say increases in early stage conversions.
