AirWatch

Best used as mobile management for cell phones and tablets. Great for sending the device directly to the user and have them set it up. Gain back valuable time for your IT department. If there are a lot of mobile users you can track the location of some of the devices. Lots of location based settings as well. Such as geofencing. It has the ability to manage PCs but I would use another appliance such as Dell Kace. Wouldn't use it in small deployments.

LANDesk Management Suite is great for mid-sized to large organizations looking to manage a mostly Windows-based environment. The overhead is likely too much for small organizations and anyone with a significant Mac population will eventually want to turn to a dedicated support tool but for dealing with those few machines here and there in an otherwise Windows environment, LANDesk will do the job.

Pros

  • Report device status in one location
  • Show device compliance and remove device from MDM if device is compromised
  • Deploy, update, or install applications on a mass scale
  • Remove users ability to use device in situations of employee termination
  • Use app "catalog" to allow users to install specific company approved applications

  • Invanti’s remote management is seamless most of the time and helps us to resolve issues without the need of the customer to provide permission during each session on or offsite.
  • We have become heavily dependent on the bundled Kapersky AV. IT is easier to maintain than our previous client.
  • There is less of a burden on our client machines. Scans are very easy to schedule.

Cons

  • Stability of shared SaaS enviroment.
  • More access to advance features for shared SaaS environment.
  • Equal visibility into environment statics to help plan and coordinate deployments.

  • Patch reporting. Ivanti is still largely user and device centric when it comes to reports. Reporting on patches is still lacking out of the box. Through other tools, we can take the patch data and build the necessary reports, but we should be able to do this with Ivanti natively.
  • Documentation. While it has improved, Ivanti is still behind on documentation for their products, especially the smaller add-ons to the main suites. Their employees are willing to help teach on different aspects of the product, but a lot of this information should already be included in documentation.

Likelihood to Renew

We've used it for 3 years and our contract is up later this year. We own the licenses, but we would have to either renew cloud services or bring the services in-house and install on servers here. We may want to see what's new in the marketplace that could be just as useful and cost effective.

Landesk Management Suite is an important part of our business. It's a useful tool that does what we need it to do on a daily basis. Landesk support is also improving which is nice to see. Overall the product continues to get better and I recommend it to anyone needing a package with such features.

Usability

It works well for our environment and what we're using it for. It actually does more than we're currently utilizing, but I believe our needs will change in the near future and we could utilize more features.

Reliability and Availability

AirWatch5.0

Just in the past few weeks our staff has had several issues with the website. It is either taking a long time to load anything or we are not able to get in at all. This is very frustrating when you are trying to manage and enroll users. It was down 2 days in a row just this past week. Not good!

Performance

Went over the availability just a minute ago on the last rating. Don't use the reporting too much but will likely begin that soon. Integration with Active Directory doesn't seem to bog either system down.

They're usually very good. I've talked to any number of techs from level one to level 3. They all seem pretty knowledgeable about the product and how to support it.

Have your organizational structure and heirarchy outlined. This helps when you are ready to create OU's and subs in AirWatch.

Alternatives Considered

The AirWatch mindset has greatly shifted from the early days and now they are all about making things work and being efficient. VMware has spent tons of time and money in moving AirWatch forward

Both solutions will effectively manage Microsoft patches to devices, but Ivanti goes the extra step. With Ivanti, we can manage third party patches, where SCCM would require a third party solution (like Ivanti, who a lot of SCCM customers use for third party). Ivanti also gives us better capabilities for software deployment, device inventory, and device support. Additionally, we have a small handful of non-Windows devices (Apple, Linux) that we can manage through Ivanti. It is a one stop shop vs. the alternative.

Scalability

It is really scalable. They love to have more users as you pay by the license. They are great in this regard.

Return on Investment

  • Printing and shipping costs have become non existent. With all presentations now being electronic and loaded prior to the meetings, we no longer have to plan ahead for physical logistics.
  • A devoted team needs to be assigned to troubleshoot the devices during the live meeting. Someone devoted to compiling and loading the information needs to be responsible and have good interpersonal skills with the account holders.
  • Updates from AirWatch Apps need to be done on a regular basis.

  • Ivanti is allowing us to accomplish more standardization and support as we centralize all IT functions and develop true global standards. Without Ivanti, we would have to use multiple tools and would not be as far along in our project as we currently are.
