Amazon S3

S3 is one of those few solutions that work for everyone at any range. Workfront

I work on a team where each of us is separated individually from the United States. Workfront enables us to collectively collaborate on a common project setting individual goals. Project managers can invite users, send out updates and set goals to be marked as complete by individual users. Definitely an AAA+ option for global team project collaborations. Smaller projects with fewer working participants would most likely not benefit from the ROI for this product, however, if these smaller tasks are building to a larger project or your teams have multiple small projects running simultaneously then Workfront is for you as well.

Pros

  • One of the main attractions of S3 is the quality of it's basic services, including security, stored data integrity, and data availability from almost anywhere via almost any system. The snapshot service is one of the best services offered through a cloud, and has always been a required feature for any SAN device I potentially purchase.
  • S3 has a strong partnership with EMC, which has allowed S3 to offer a wide variety of services and features that would normally require the customer to purchase an EC device, which opens up high-level storage to smaller companies at an affordable rate.
  • S3 has a major lead over other cloud providers due to the S3 service, and the wide range of capabilities. Instead of being a simple "drive" it can natively operate as a web server, hosting a wide array of static content, which reduces server load and costs. This is a major advantage, especially for someone operating within the free tier, where every little bit of processing power is an important resource.
  • The final selling point of S3 for myself, was the ability to connect into a wide variety of services, both local Amazon services, such as CloudFront CDN, and remote non-Amazon services such as WordPress backup solutions, which ends up keeping all of my data across the organization at one easy to access, and secure location.

  • We love the agile capabilities in Workfront. The tool does a great job of combining agile and traditional task management into a single tool.
  • Workfront Request Queues provide an easy way to manage and route requests ensuring that the right people see and act on requests.
  • Workfront reporting allows to automate project status reporting without having to write a separate status report. We enter project updates directly into Workfront and then use scheduled reports to deliver information to stakeholders.

Cons

  • While S3 has a huge list of available services, the services themselves tend to be lacking, such as the web server capability being able to only host static HTML content.
  • The additional capabilities have gotten a bit "out of hand" in terms of the amount of services available, which seemingly follow no particular grouping, which can make venturing beyond basic S3 storage services a daunting, and confusing endeavor.
  • Not having any storage "packages" for serving data is a big negative, as we would feel more comfortable with a set package, and a known monthly cost, rather than a fluctuating service billed by time x data.

  • Workfront limits the ability to change the field structure making each form become longer and longer with unnecessary information
  • Workfront does not offer the ability to hide fields that are deemed unnecessary for my organization
  • Workfront can become too complex and overbearing on workload management by entering in hours per task and so on. Instead offer hours involved per project overall.

All that I've said already is why. I suppose the clearest way to say it is that at this point? I cannot imagine running the 300+ active projects in eMarketing without AtTask; it simply wouldn't be possible and even more; I wouldn't imagine why we'd try to find an alternative tool when we have one meeting our needs.

Workfront (formerly AtTask) is simply the finest project management tool I've ever used. It has the best features of Project (e.g. ease of use to see Gannt charts or task lists) but with robust reporting and easy communication via Updates? it's a hit.

I would recommend all user's using Workfront to go through the training material provided. Have all user's practice in the Sandbox environment and have your workflow documented for the consultant before he arrives on site.

Alternatives Considered

S3 is still being used within our org but we have dialed it back heavily due to the inexpensive competing product CloudFlare offers. CloudFlare is basically free for the same functionality and the company has matured to the point where it is reliable and scalable, plus CDN distribution is their bread and butter on top of that. If we were starting over today I'd start with CloudFlare.

I have very little experience using other systems like Workfront. My background is more in billing systems and order processes. All I can say is it beats Google Docs and endless email chains.

  • We have seen an increase in productivity as we are able to show our developers where they impact the overall project.
  • We are able to justify when we're unable to provide resources for a specific piece of work on short notice.
  • If we used the project scorecard, we could show a great impact on how we are working towards the strategic initiatives of the organization.
