Highlights |
Research Team Insight Published Microsoft To Do (formerly Wunderlist) and Todoist are productivity apps that can increase your efficiency and allow you to stay on task. Microsoft To Do is a new offering from Microsoft after their acquisition of Wunderlist. It is part of the Office 365 portfolio and allows easy integration with Outlook to assist you in keeping on track throughout the day. Todoist is a very popular application that features gamification of tasks to make getting things done more fun and to motivate users to complete their goals. Both applications have free versions that make them attractive choices for individuals and small businesses. FeaturesMicrosoft To Do and Todoist each offer a few features that make them stand out next to their competition. Microsoft To Do’s main advantage is that it is free and has no usage tiers. It also features Outlook Task integration to allow syncing with emails and calendars. And, since it is part of the Microsoft portfolio and is incorporated into Office 365 it allows team collaboration with other Office 365 users. Todoist’s main draw is its gamification of tasks. The app is abe to award points for completed tasks, create streaks for continued usage, and also features productivity charts and visualizations so users can see their progress. Todoist also features natural language processing when creating tasks so users can spend less time keying in task details. The app also offers location-based reminders so if a user is near an place on their list they will receive an alert notification. LimitationsMicrosoft To Do and Todoist each have a few drawbacks depending on a user’s specific needs. Microsoft To Do does not support the ability to export lists. This means users are not able to send lists to other users. Users also report disliking that there is no ability to add details under subtasks. Users can add notes, but they must click on the subtask to view these and they are not visible from the main task hierarchy. Another limitation of Microsoft To Do is there is no gamification or achievements to motivate users. Todoist has paid tiers. This leads to some major features being left out in the free tier. Users also report that a calendar view is unavailable in the app. This means users who want calendar functionality must link Todoist to another calendar app. Todoist also features a very simple interface that some users report as a hindrance once projects grow to be very large. PricingMicrosoft To Do is available for free on all platforms. Todoist has several pricing options. A free version is available and holds up to 80 projects. The next step is the Premium tier for $3 per month and allows up to 300 projects and 25 people per project. Todoist’s top offer is their Business tier. This allows 500 projects per user and 50 people per project. |
