Overall Satisfaction with Miro

I use Miro for Design Thinking workshops with my user base and also for UX discussions. This is primarily used for Users who are geographically challenged and it allows for them to interact with Product Design and discussions in a fun and interactive way. I have been using Miro since the Pandemic and this has proved to be the best interactive tool to get the maximum outcome from Users with different personality traits (introverts and extroverts). The tool allows for my Users to add sticky notes and interactively drag and drop them where suited. I am able to articulate a problem visually and the input that I get is very effective in this environment. Overall, this tool is one of the best at getting User interaction on an endless whiteboard that allows my Users to fully express themselves in a way that suits them. The reason why I use this tool is to get essential feedback to business problems using pictures and comments etc for those users who are in different locations (national & global) and easy for those whose first language is not English.

Pros

  • You can utilize predefined templates such as grids for Lean Canvasses, Agile planning, and tools such as mind maps or process diagrams.
  • You can instantly bring everyone to follow you with one click, especially if there is a large user group who may be in different parts of the whiteboard. An infinite whiteboard will often make a User wander into an area, and one-click brings everyone to one place.
  • An interactive display allows me to display on my Microsoft Surface Hub in meetings, where I can then use the big screen to edit and interact with the board. This works well with my Microsoft Edge browser.

Cons

  • I find that when I select the "arrow" on the left menu to drag, the screen is often lost when I move to another window and come back to it. What this means is that I end up moving my objects on the whiteboard. This is resolved by only clicking the arrow again to be able to drag the screen. From User Experience, I click once, and this should be fixed regardless of my moving to a different window and returning. This becomes an issue when I have a large User group and when we all use this functionality, quite often, this means lots of objects on my whiteboard get dragged unintentionally.
  • Reduced logistical constraints! (time & money).
  • Higher participation rate, rore engagement to suit Users, especially without logistics.
  • Quicker decision making, all materials are in front of you past and present on same whiteboard so easier to recollect previous discussions and outcomes.
Miro has easily been integrated with our O365 - MS Teams that we use for groupwide collaboration. There seem to be no issues, and it fits well with our Digital experience. The board can be linked and is always available for the desired team to always go back to review contents without the need to go via a browser.
Working for a global organization means our Users are in multiple countries, especially those that are in critical Engineering roles means their time is essential. The collaboration across the whole organization has significantly improved with greater participation levels, and this is down to the reduction of logistics to meet face to face; it also allows for a User to join from anywhere of their choice. The pandemic prevailed various personal challenges for Users, and this tool is very non-invasive and allows Users to actively participate in their work-life balance.

Yes

Although this is an available standard tool that we get with our O365 package, the functionalities are limited, with a slow rate of improvement over time. Leaders in this space, such as Miro, who are designed for online collaboration, have invested more time and effort to enhance the User Experience.
As stated before, this is one of the best tools for a Digital Transformation initiative that requires Design Thinking workshops involving large User groups in different locations. Previously, I have used a swimlane/process map to interact, and I found that using the stick notes on Miro is more effective because I get the User to write out their own comments. This gives a sense of accountability to their comments and no misunderstanding, especially when trying to paraphrase what the User meant. It gives my Users a greater feeling of involvement in problem resolution and finding the solution that works best for them. Surprisingly, I found more problems articulated using Miro as opposed to listening to the trying to interpret. Often, my role involves more LISTENING, and previously I was diverted from this because I was too busy trying to document what the previous idea or comment was. This allowed us to "share understanding" across the User group, so there is never any ambiguity.
