Ascentis HR

I would recommend the HR system over the Payroll system 10x over. The payroll system has many more glitches and workarounds; however, if you are like our organization you want an integrated product. If you are a smaller organization and have the time to reverify the report information, I would recommend the HR piece. The ESS system is a strong positive for us!

Ceridian Dayforce HCM

Ceridian Dayforce HCM is great for any size employer as long as the employer takes the time to truly test the system during implementation. We eliminated so much frustration by taking the time to test and retest the system to how we need it to work with our organization. We jumped in and implemented all the modules that were available to us at the time and we dedicated a team of 6 to 7 people throughout implementation to the project. This was time well spent for sure. I highly suggest doing that.

Pros

  • Ascentis HR is particularly helpful in keeping a record of past jobs and/or managers. If you have an organization that lets employees move from one department to another fairly often, this software has a tool that will help you keep track when Employee "A" moved from Supervisor "X" to Supervisor "Y" as well as from Department "B" to Department "F" without having to restart that employees length of service.
  • Ascentis HR also has a number of ways that you can customize tabs. If you want to keep track of something for your organization that you don't see on one of their prefabricated tabs or screens you can make one of your own. We have made several different ones to help us keep track of different information such as driver's licenses and expiration dates as well as specific training and/or orientation tasks that we want supervisors to accomplish with their new employees.
  • Ascentis HR lets you upload documents (particularly pdf) to employees files, which is particularly helpful. Additionally, you can mark these so that the employee can or cannot see them when they log onto their side of the Employee Self Service. One of the things I particularly like about these uploaded documents is that each part cluster of tabs has its own tab for attachments. When you open the "Employee" section where you find information about the employee and his/her personal information as well as job information, you will also find a tab where you can put attachments for personal and/or job-related information - such as a job description sign off or something of the like. When you open the "Compensation" section you will find another tab for attachments, and this might be where you decide to upload copies of direct deposits if you require them or wage changes.

  • Dayforce is robust and has a lot of functionality, once you understand all its capabilities. This allows us to make more informed and data-driven decisions.
  • The user interface is relatively user-friendly and intuitive. Our employees find it easy to navigate, requiring less help on tactical HR needs and freeing up that time for more strategic needs.
  • All of the data is housed in a single platform, which makes analyzing the data in new and more informative ways easier.

Cons

  • The product is accessed through a remote desktop. This makes the product extremely slow. So slow sometimes, that the reaction time lags so much that it isn't worth it to make any changes in the system.
  • The bonus and performance modules are not conducive for a successful performance management campaign. There are so many unique situations in our organzation, that these modules can't keep up with all of the intricacies.
  • The support staff has given misguided advice. Perhaps they need to be trained better?
  • We have two different company names, so in the system, we have to select the correct company name in order to view that company's information. It makes it difficult for running reports for the entire organization because you have to run one report in one company code and then select the other company code to run an identical report and then combine the two reports in order to run a report for the entire organization.

  • Customer Support can be challenging at times. Ceridian is growing rapidly so we don’t always get the level of experience needed to resolve our issues as quickly as we would like.
  • They are migrating all functionality from Silverlight to HTML. Not everything has been migrated yet so it gets confusing when reporting. Thankfully, it’s a temporary situation.
  • Reporting has a steep learning curve when implementing as many modules as we did. That said, there are tons of canned reports available.

Nothing against Ascentis, but we have outgrown this system far faster than anticipated. Our company has nearly doubled in size from when we first implemented. It has been an excellent starter HRIS but we just need to add additional functionality. Some of the features we are looking for is ability to pull data and build reports. Ascentis really lags in that category. Also looking to add additional functionality such as performance management and payroll - Ascentis offers these, but not in a fully integrated fashion that would really help.

Dayforce was our solution to managing and combing several websites and intranets into one place. By doing so, it makes it easier for employees to see and manage all of their personal info that relates to their job. We were able to combine benefits management, time keeping, intranet forms, employee data, pay stubs, time off requests, and more into one location. The software is customizable so we can add or remove items as we see fit which is the greatest benefit of investing in this software solution

Ascentis support usually responds to email in a timely manner - sometimes a quick phone call helps speed things up. Overall quite pleased with their support, although for the most part it is simply password resets for the RDP users. We hope to see a full web-based employee manager function soon.

Support is an area that Dayforce could work on more. That being said, they did recently implement a new 'pod' system for handling support inquiries. This has resulted in better understanding of our unique configuration as well as quicker turn-around times.

In-Person Training

Ascentis HR8.0
Based on 1 answer
First, to clarify our "in-person" training was done mainly through Web-X meetings and conference calls. It was the closest thing we got to as far as an "in-person" training for this software. However, for the large majority of it, this type of training worked out well. We were able to share our screens and the trainer was able to share his/her screen. We could follow along with what we were doing in our database in real time and see how different functions worked and how manipulating our information could produce different results. It was also nice in that it provided for real-time results if something hadn't been coded correctly or we were having issues as to why something wasn't working the way we thought it should be. However, it did have some downsides in that we often had to rely on a conference phone and that made it difficult to hear people on both sides. Also, sometimes the trainers had internet difficulties when working from home and that caused issues with the WebX meetings.

Because the training we reviewed at Insights has changed how we use the system everyday. This is a key factor in our training.

Online Training

Ascentis HR6.0
Based on 2 answers
Ascentis HR has a number of online training videos to watch on a number of different topics. I gave it a lower rating because there is not much interactivity with the videos and it seems to cater to really only one or two learning styles. Plus, one has to be pretty motivated to go to a separate area to access the videos and then pull up a specific one to watch it and then learn. From my experience, people know that they are there, many just don't take the time and effort to go find them and actually watch them - especially since the username and password are different from their normal username and password.

The session was informative, but went very slowly. The trainers were knowledgable but did not have in depth knowledge, as in, they could not answer questions outside of the scope of the training session.

Don't skip steps. The customer support for Ascentis HR left it up to us how far we wanted to go with implementation of benefits for example. I was very glad that I elected to go into the detail implementation that I did rather than just doing the basics and waiting until later to complete the process.

There are so many ways you can program with software. Take the time to think about not only how you currently perform the tasks you do in other software or by paper and think through how you might improve upon your processes in the future and what things you may want to do differently in the future.

Alternatives Considered

I have found that ADP has a lot more features and was more user friendly. Ascentis is much better than Ceridian and provides more information than Ceridian.

Overall, we are extremely happy with the Dayforce WFM module. Our biggest pain point is concerning the twice annual software upgrades - which is the only reason I haven't rated them as a '10'. Because every customer is configured differently, the upgrades can sometimes have adverse effects on our current configured policies/rules. And although they roll-out the upgraded version in a test environment several weeks before go-live, not all testing is accurate in that environment. Some issues do not present themselves until you are working with live punches.

Return on Investment

  • Positive impact is a single system to house a valuable set of systems
Kathi Groth profile photo
  • We eliminated nine systems and 22 interfaces.
  • Risk of error has been reduced by the elimination of duplicate data entry.
  • Eventually, we expect to move to a paperless HR environment enabled by the Dayforce document management functionality.
