It's a great tool for media or market-facing sites that get enough customer traffic to benefit from realtime changes in headlines, design or display. However, small sites that don't get enough traffic to benefit from realtime changes in headlines, design or display probably can't justify the cost of the product.

Marketo

Marketo does a great job of serving as the central piece of any marketing tech stack. It's designed to integrate well with a variety of services, and does a fantastic job of serving different marketing functions well. Smart programs are able to be customized to deliver complex, multi-channel initiatives that can be targeted and reproduced easily. It's a superior system of record for performance data, and one that does a great job of tracking lead progression through the marketing and sales funnel.

Pros

Chartbeat

  • Instant insight for newsrooms: What are readers reading, on what platform, how long are they staying?
  • Headline testing: Allows us to try multiple versions of the 'sell' for the story to understand what interests different sorts of readers
  • Segmentation of audience: Allows us to understand not only where readers come from (search, social, direct, etc.) but also how loyal they are and how long they stay
  • Proper engagement time: Too often our industry obsesses on dwell time, but Chartbeat's active engaged time gives us a true sense of how long we really engage people for
  • Simple actions: For example, the Chartbeat overlay tells us where people on average leave a story, so it helps us take actions quickly

Marketo

  • Automation is top notch with its smart campaign execution not only within Marketo, but triggering external communications.
  • Connectivity of data and automation within CRM is top notch
  • Email marketing templates are simple, straightforward and easy to manipulate through modules.
  • Reporting and subscriptions make sharing data with outside users very simple

Cons

Chartbeat

  • The service could be broken down to provide page view figures for individual tags on our website metadata
  • The dashboard for each day could offer more detail on performance compared to previous days/last week - how many people viewed articles of the same topic in a similar time period
Andrew Topping | TrustRadius Reviewer

Marketo

  • Reporting - Although Marketo reports can answer surface questions and some canned concepts, drilling down and customizing reports is still problematic and is best served through big data and BI visualization.
  • Maintenance - The system is not very forgiving for non-technical users working at scale and often requires intervention as performance degrades over time.

I gave Chartbeat a 5 for a renewal rating, because, while it delivers clear and understandable content, Google Analytics also provides many of the same features for free. For a small to medium website, I believe it would be more cost effective to use Google Analytics. A website with a high amount of traffic, however, could merit spending the money on Chartbeat to maximize their potential.

We're likely to renew for several reasons:
  • Now that it's been implemented, I can't imagine not having marketing automation and the easy interface that Marketo provides to run our campaigns
  • Marketo's community and customer service is fantastic; I know that when I need help, I'll get it
  • Marketo continues to improve the product, so I know that I can expect it to be even more useful in the future

[Charbeat is] really user friendly both on desktop and mobile. In terms of being able to extract live data, it has been transformational. We are able to make live content decisions backed up by research from platforms which is relevant at the time of publication. The app makes it possible for me to stay in touch with performance when I am not working.

There's a fair amount of flexibility, but as you start moving beyond the basics and get into more complex programs, it gets a bit cumbersome; for example, flexible drip campaigns that can customize / change content based on triggers after the initial start. Some way of normalizing scoring so older, less intensive users don't overshadow newer, more-intense users. Etc.For a basic setup and taking control of the user flow from contact to lead without leaks, Marketo is awesome, once you've got the core data governance and standardized processes in place.Template design is difficult - designers find it restrictive and there is a LOT of debugging needed, with finished templates sometimes behaving very oddly in some environments - adding / deleting code snippets, disabling some scripts - not enough to break it, but definitely some odd behaviors

Marketo provides different way and abilities to connect. If you are having product support or unexplained errors you can get someone on Marketo support 24 hours a day. One of Marketo's greatest assets in my opinion however would be the community. Often times our company is just looking for case success stories from someone else. In the community you can search for problems you are currently facing and see others having the same issue and solutions for those issues. If not, you can pose a question to the whole community and champions of the product and others can chime in to provide suggestions to fix your needs. The community is truly a 24/7 place to get your answers quickly.

There are times when it is slightly slow for us, where we sit on a screen waiting for it to load. This could be our internet since we have had the same issue occasionally with other systems, but it is enough to make you crazy.

Support seems to be solid although there does not appear to be regional (ie. UK) support. One support enquiry I requested asking for an improvement to the interface was however, dealt with promptly and very helpfully and this surprised me a little as it was a UK request to a US support service

On multiple occasions we've had Marketo support (technical and license based) issues. Technical issues were minor and resolved within a day. License based issues (even things encouraged by Marketo for partners, like provisioning another license) took WEEKS. They actually took so long to respond that the client we were working with withdrew from the contract because they were no longer convinced Marketo was capable of supporting their business. As an agency trying to sell the software, you can only explain away so much before they just made us look silly.

Our account rep stopped out in Lincoln, NE to ensure we were properly set up and running. This was very much appreciated. I was very, very new at this point, so I can't comment very much on the extent of what was taught because I was still brand new to the company and the system

I had never used Marketo prior to taking this job so online training was my starting point. I was able to follow along, it was interesting and quickly and efficiently taught me what I needed to know without a lot of fluff. It was far from boring and really helped me get my hands dirty with Marketo.

1. Have a content marketing plan to run in parallel with the marketing automation installation--you'll need a lot of content to make full use of Marketo's capabilities.2. Work with sales (and ISRs) to define and document a workflow--build your Marketo installation around how you do business--not figure out how to apply your business to the tools3. Spend time of data cleaning--both an initial project as well as a strategy for ongoing data management. We found some change manaement issues (no more appending ZZZ to the first name to identify contacts who have left the company, for example, or prohibiting the entry of "info@company.com" email addresses).4. Find some champions in the sales and ISR teams. You'll have both fans and detractors--work with the fans to build some success stories

Larger analytics suites like Google Analytics and Omniture simply do not provide the kind of real-time data that Chartbeat does. I have used Parse.ly which has some interesting real-time features as well; I would say Parse.ly is similar in terms of ease of use, though Chartbeat does give you the feeling of using a best-in-class product.

Marketo stacks up against all other MAP tools well. It does things like tokenization better than anyone else. The workflows and process management are similar if not a little better than most other MAPs. It's a little more expensive than HubSpot and Pardot, but it makes up for that in time savings. It integrates with all the major CRMs extremely well. We use it with our clients because it's what they have chosen.

We look at scaleability in a few different ways. First, the speed while using Marketo has remained relatively the same as our database has grown. Though I would say Marketo is slow at times, it has not gotten slower over the last few years. If anything, it has improved, and they are working to improve it. Second, the amount of programs we have developed in Marketo has exponentially grown as well. Marketo has allowed us to drastically increase our output without having to drastically increase our headcount.

Return on Investment

Chartbeat

  • The most positive impact is that it gives us realtime outage emails — faster than our server provider does. So we know within seconds if one of our sites is down. This has proven an invaluable part of Chartbeat
  • Another great feature of Chartbeat is the multiple sites dashboard, so I can see traffic to all my sites at once.
Anonymous | TrustRadius Reviewer

Marketo

  • Improved efficiency across teams in the business. When you don't have to manually send out emails, you gain more time back!
  • More targeted lead nurture has led to faster lead conversion and real-time engagement. In today's day and age, customers want the right CTA at their fingertips and Marketo can provide that.
